Milk - A movie that should be seen by everyone - 11/30/08 11:40 AM
"Milk" is one of the best movies I've seen a very long time. It's a bold movie, well written and sincere.
Milk is based on the true story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk - who along with the Mayor at that time - Mayor George Moscone, was shot to death by San Francisco Supervisor Dan White. The story is not just about Gay Rights, but an inspirational testament to the equality and freedoms envisioned by the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
The subject matter is highly relevant in the current political environment with Prop 8, recently voted on … (10 comments)

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow ActiveRainers - 11/27/08 10:00 AM
This week I discovered that an associate of mine had lost his home due to the depressed Real Estate Market. His loft was foreclosed on.
I realized how very fortunate I am that despite the current brutal Real Estate Market I've continued to do deals and remain busy. It's been difficult and frustrating - but at least I'm doing the business. Many others aren't, and I sincerely feel for them.
It makes me pause and appreciate what I have: A loving and supportive partner, wonderful and caring family and friends, good health, a great home, a thriving business, and freedom and … (13 comments)

The Changeling - A movie worthy of Academy Awards - 11/16/08 12:03 PM
There'a trend for new movies to be 2 hours long - or even more. Often directors let the movie go on-an-on resulting in a tiresome experience. But this is definately not the case with The Changeling, which is over two and a quarter hours.
The Changeling is based on a true story that took place in Los Angeles in the 1920's - 1930's and tells of a single mother (Angelina Jolie) whose son disappears from their home.
The mother's prayers are answered when the son is found and returned home after many months. But the mother is convinced the boy is not … (10 comments)

Prop 8, Marriage, and more - An excellent commentary by Keith Olbermann - 11/15/08 09:22 AM
SPECIAL COMMENT by Keith Olbermann
"Prop 8 is not a question about politics or religion or gay or straight, but rather a question of love".
I don't often quote Keith Olbermann or MSNBC, but this commentary is so sincere and heartfelt, that I wanted to share it with as many friends as possible.
What Obermann highlights is so basic and simple, yet it' overlooked by so many people.

Boycott El Coyote - Restaurant owner voted "YES on Prop 8" - 11/13/08 03:40 PM
A part-owner of a Mexican restaurant in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles (on the West Hollywood border) - El Coyote - confirmed that she donated money to the "Yes on 8 Campaign" in the restaurant's name. El Coyote has 89 employees, many of whom are gay.
El Coyote has a loyal gay clientele and has been a succesful family-owned restuarant since 1931.
Apparently - Marjorie Christoffersen - a part-owner of the restaurant, made the donation when requested to do so by the Mormon Church. Christoffersen said she simply did what her church told her, "El Coyote is as diverse as its clientele … (29 comments)

The unravelling of Sarah Palin - What she didn't know and refused to learn - 11/06/08 07:23 AM
Carl Cameron discusses the real Sarah Palin with Bill O'Reilly on FOX News. It's mind-boggling to hear how unsuited Palin was for the position as the Vice Presidential nominee - yet O'Reilly continues to make excuses for her.
The good news is that Palin is back home in Wasilla, where she belongs. Hopefully he visions of grandeur will be tempered and she'll stay put in Alaska.

"Never give in, never give in ..." - Proposition 8 is not over - 11/05/08 06:01 PM
"Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense" - Winston Churchill
The final result of Proposition 8 has not been confirmed as yet. Thousands of concerned citizens are displaying their extreme disappointment with the very close vote by attending community gatherings all over California.
"Never before in California's history has a group, who currently enjoys a basic right, been singled out and then had those rights ripped from them by a vote of their fellow citizens. This decision is so … (43 comments)

West Hollywood Pet Sitting Service to change to a "Pet Sitters Network" - 11/05/08 02:15 PM
Another sign of the difficult financial times we're experiencing was evident by an email I received from Bunky's Buddies, a local pet sitting service in West Hollywood.
"It is with great sadness that we must inform you that Bunky's Buddies Pet Sitting and Home Concierge will be closing its business as of December 1st, 2008.  Due financial difficulties, it is no longer profitable to operate Bunky's."
The email explains that effective January 2009 their business will change to an online service called "The Pet Sitters Network".
This could be good business move for the owners of Bunky's as they will still be able to … (0 comments)

A great day, yet a sad day for America - 11/05/08 11:11 AM
Today marks a great day in the history of America - we have an exciting new president elect who can not only set our country back on the right track, bt also restore America's dignity in the International Community. However, today also marks a sad day as California strips gays of the right to marry.
This is really troubling as California is usually a leader in change with one of the most liberal and foreward thinking electorate. So what went wrong that Proposition 8 will amend the constitution?
There was an overwhelming amount of non-Californian financial contributions to supoort Prop 8, … (32 comments)

A proud day for America - Yes we can ... Yes we did. - 11/05/08 09:25 AM

Today is a proud day for America. We have a new president elect and have every reason to move forward with renewed energy, optimism and excitement. Change is happening.
We have the opportunity to restore America's status as a work leader and an inspiration to the world.
It's the responsibility of each and every once of us to reach out to each other and heal the divisiveness caused by the extended and hotly contested presidential campaigns.
Barack Obama delivered an inspiring and poignant speech last night, and John McCain, despite his obvious disappointment, gave a graceful concession speech.
It's time to move beyond party diffferences … (12 comments)

There are some excellent sites that provide up to date information on the election with interactive content as well.
For starters I recommend you check out Google Voter Info: This site offers an easy way to find your polling place. Type in your home address, and you'll get an interactive map in seconds.
Then take a look at idashboard - an oustanding resource with real time information.
And remember, "Republicans are the best reason to vote for Democrats". (Inspired by Will Rogers)

McCain's last desperate attempt to close the gap .... and Cheney endorses him - 11/01/08 08:14 PM
With only 3 days to go until America votes for our new President, both candidates are delivering their "closing arguements".
While Obama presents a summary of what he's been saying throughout his campaign, McCain continues his deperate attempt to grab at any issue he thinks may stick on Obama and hurt him in the polls.
Obama is promoting his philosophy that "We can prove that we are not as divided as our politics would suggest, that we are more than a collection of red states and blue states -- we are the United States." McCain, on the other hand, is trying … (14 comments)

Kanner Architects - Futuristic Gas Stations appear in Los Angeles - Going green with Helios House - 11/01/08 03:48 PM
Interesting and futuristic-looking gas stations are opening up around Los Angeles.
The first such unique gas station was Helios House, a BP site at the corner of of Robertson & Olympic Blvd in Los Angeles.
It's a self-service center that sells only unleaded gasoline. The station consists of a stainless steel structure covering all the pumps and has 90 solar panels that supply power for the station. The unfinished stainless steel design increases light reflectivity which in turn reduces lighting demand. Light fixtures throughout the site use LED lamps. which are controlled by photocells and motion detectors to control their operation. Rainwater is collected by the large canopy and pumped to … (18 comments)
