gay rights: "And Justice For All" - New York Legalizes Same Sex Marriage - 06/25/11 04:01 AM

The New York State Senate passed the marriage equality bill on Friday June 24, 2011.
The 33-29 vote in favor of the bill included four Republicans and is the first time a state Senate with a Republican majority has approved such a bill.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law late Friday night just before midnight.

"This vote today will send a message across the country. This is the way to go, the time to do it is now, and it is achievable; it's no longer a dream or an aspiration. I think you're going to see a … (59 comments)

gay rights: "Liberty And Justice For All" - Through The Eyes Of A 10-Year Old - 11/16/09 05:57 AM
"Liberty and Justice For All" .... through the eyes of a 10-year old. It's encouraging to see that young children are thinking for themselves and that a parent can be supportive in promoting an open mind that yearns for truth. While the 10-year boy may have been impolite to his teacher, at least he had the courage of his conviction and the guts to say what he believed ... and why! Solemly, and with a little bit of malice in his voice ......."Ma'am, with all due respect, you can go jump off a bridge!"

gay rights: President Obama to end "Don't Ask Don't Tell" - 10/11/09 08:09 AM

At an important speech to The Human Rights Campaign, President Obama promised to end "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".
He also pledged to work to rescind "The Defense of Marriage Act" and sign the "Matthew Shepard Act". However, he fell short of supporting marriage for same-sex couples.
I believe President Obama is sincerely moving gay rights forward in Washington and is committed to promoting equality for all ... but as most gay rights activists agree, there is no definitive timeline for these important issues to be resolved.
Fox News was quick to issue an article highlighting The Liberty Counsel which … (9 comments)

gay rights: RepealProp8.com - Repeal Prop 8 in 2010 - 06/12/09 02:28 AM

Proposition 8 was a California ballot proposition that was passed in the November 2008 general election which restricted "marriage" to couples of the opposite sex, effectively banning same-sex couples' right to marry.
The California Constitution was changed to eliminate equal rights among all Californians.
The validity of Prop 8 was challenged in the Supreme Court but the Court upheld Proposition 8 in a May 2009 ruling.
As an American Citizen, Californian Taxpayer who happens to be a gay man, I believe Prop 8 is inheritenly wrong as it goes against the fundamental rights and freedoms upon which this country was … (23 comments)

gay rights: LA Pride - June 12-14, 2009 - 06/08/09 04:37 PM
It's that time of the year again when the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community celebrates Gay Pride in Los Angeles. In fact, June is recognized as Pride Month by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community worldwide.
Hundreds of thousands of people celebrate LA Pride in West Hollywood each year.
"Events are held in June to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 28, 1969, which most historians consider to be the birth of the modern LGBT civil rights movement"
"At the time, police raids on bars catering to LGBT patrons were common, … (8 comments)

gay rights: Crazy, crazy, crazy ..... !!! Gay Marriage, Prop 8, and one looney-tunes lady!!! - 05/30/09 01:45 AM
The Huffington Post featured a post with the funniest photo of one crazy, crazy woman, who tried to hand-deliver a letter to President Barack Obama when Air-force-One landed in Los Angeles this afternoon.

According to the article, the person in question was Brenda Lee, a writer for a small Georgia newspaper.
Airport security officers carried the woman away by the feet and arms as she protested her removal. She was attempting to hand deliver a letter to the President of the United States in which she stated her views opposing gay marriage.
The over-enthusiastic imbecile, who lives in Anaheim, California … (17 comments)

gay rights: Rockstar Energy Drink - What's their true position on Gay Rights? - 05/19/09 06:19 PM

I was recently alerted to a website that's exposing "The Truth about Rockstar Energy Drink", and their hateful, anti-gay, homophobic position.
The website is promoting a boycott on Rockstar on the basis that the owners of Rockstar, Russel Goldencloud Weiner (Rockstar's CEO), his father Michael Weiner (aka as Michael Savage, the conservative talk-show host & inventor of the Rockstar energy drink), and Janet Weiner (Wife and mother of Michael & Russel & Rockstar's CFO), are perpetuating intolerance, hate, and homophobia.
Michael Weiner (Michael Savage) is on record having said the following: "You want me to tell you what makes me sick? When I … (12 comments)

gay rights: Sarah Palin picks homophobic attorney general - 03/30/09 04:13 AM
Governor Sarah Palin has appointed Anchorage attorney, Wayne Anthony Ross as Alaska's attorney general.
Palin stated that "with his vast legal knowledge, experience and integrity, he will make an exceptional attorney general."
Ross is the very same attorney who referred to gays as "immoral" and "degenerates" in a letter her wrote several years ago to the Anchorage Bar Association newsletter. This was in opposition to an anti-discrimination ordinance being supported by several Anchorage lawyers who were advocating gay rights.
The fact that Palin chose such an individual as Alaska's attorney general is not surprising given her comments on gay rights and … (14 comments)

gay rights: California Supreme Court to hear arguments on Proposition 8 - 03/03/09 03:10 AM
Starting on March 5, 2009 the California Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Proposition 8 - the controverial November 2008 ballot that changed the California State Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, effectively prejudicing same-sex couples wanting equal rights enjoyed by heterosexual couples.
In addition to hearing challenges to Proposition 8, the court will consider the fate of 18,000 same-sex marriages that occurred before the November election.
According to The Los Angeles Times: "Forty-three groups representing civil rights activists, legal scholars, labor unions, bar associations, state legislators and religious organizations have filed written arguments asking that Proposition 8 be overturned. Twenty … (8 comments)

gay rights: Milk - A movie that should be seen by everyone - 11/30/08 03:40 AM
"Milk" is one of the best movies I've seen a very long time. It's a bold movie, well written and sincere.
Milk is based on the true story of California's first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk - who along with the Mayor at that time - Mayor George Moscone, was shot to death by San Francisco Supervisor Dan White. The story is not just about Gay Rights, but an inspirational testament to the equality and freedoms envisioned by the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.
The subject matter is highly relevant in the current political environment with Prop 8, recently voted on … (10 comments)

gay rights: Social Security and Equal Rights - What's legal isn't equitable nor just - 09/17/08 11:24 AM

A few day s ago I received my Social Security Statement in the mail. While reading through the 4-page document I began to think about the enormous problems facing the system - and further refelcted on the inequality and injustice of the system. Two immediate issues struck me:
ISSUE # 1: The Statement/Brochure plainly states that "in 2017 we will begin paying more in benefits than we collect in taxes. Without changes, by 2041 the Social Security Trust Fund will be exhausted. We need to resolve these issues soon."
One of the immediate "band-aid" solutions to the solvency crisis is to gradually … (3 comments)

gay rights: Californians will vote on banning same-sex marriage - November 2008 - 07/17/08 03:09 AM
"The California Supreme Court has cleared the way for Californians to vote in November on whether to ban same-sex marriages in the state."
" The court on Wednesday denied a petition to remove the initiative from the state's general election ballots. The unanimous decision was handed down without elaboration. On June 2, opponents of same-sex marriage filed for a ballot initiative that would ban such marriages in the state's constitution. Such a ban would overturn the court's May ruling (permitting same sex marriages)." - CNN Online
Will Californians proceed with unlawful discrimination by banning gay-marriage in the State's Constitution? Isn't the Constitution … (8 comments)

gay rights: "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject" - Winston Churchill - 05/25/08 06:55 AM
Winston Churchill was one of the greatest orators of all time. With just a few carefully chosen words he made profound statements. So the words one uses obviously matter. I remember a Rabbi who once said: "Keep your words soft and sweet, because one day you may have to eat them". How profound was that?
I believe that each day we can all learn something new. We grow from what we learn, and we teach by what we say and what we do. We develop social skills from an early age, and this enables us to interact and communicate with others. … (28 comments)

gay rights: Prejudice and Injustice - The "Stepped up Basis" for Property Valuation - 05/18/08 10:02 AM
Do you know that when a spouse in a straight marraiage dies, and the property (owned by the two spouses) is valued for Estate Duty purposes, there is what is called a "stepped up basis" which is not applicable in Gay Marriages or Civil Unions.
Practically, what this means is that if a property is valued at (for example purposes) at $100,000, and the surviving spouse sells the property the day after the one souse dies, Capital Gains Tax is payable on the difference between the Selling Price and the "stepped up basis".
In my example above, if the stepped-up basis … (7 comments)
