going green: Windmade - A New Logo To Look For - 06/16/11 06:05 AM
There's a new logo to look out for .... it's called Windmade.
Windmade is an initiative leading to the first global consumer label identifying products and companies made with wind energy.
"The WindMade™ label will provide qualifying companies the ability to effectively communicate to consumers a commitment to wind energy that differentiates their brand, and signals a strong commitment to renewable energy".
Today, more than ever, we need to be aware of our environment - and supporting companies and products that participate in these campaigns is a great way for all of us to be more involved.

going green: The Tango All-Electric Car - 01/22/10 10:39 AM

I'd never heard of the all-electric  "Tango" car until this week. Apparently its been around since 2005, but due to production problems very cars have actually been delivered to buyers.
The Tango is made by Commuter Car Corportaion based in Spokane, Washington.
The Tango is marketed as "the world's fastest urban car, combining the speed and agylity of a motorcyle with the security of a high-performance sportscar". The Tango can seat two adults in tandem or can seat one adult with over 10 cubic feet if the passenger seat is removed.
The Tango does have some impressive specs: The car is only … (14 comments)

going green: Going Green in Los Angeles - Waterless Grass - 08/15/09 03:10 AM

Going Green in Los Angeles - Waterless Grass
"LALA Land" (aka Los Angeles) is famous for creating "make-believe" -  but I'm not talking about movie studios and their life-like sets. I'm talking about garden lawn - The artificial kind.
While showing a property in an area adjacent to Beverly Hills, the prospective Buyers commented about how wonderful the grass was growing despite being in shaded areas. Upon closer inspection we realized the grass wasn't grass at all, but rather a grass-like carpet that had been installed throughout the yard.
I've noticed this "waterless grass" is becoming a popular trend in … (14 comments)

going green: Alternative Fuel Technology was available as far back as 1978 - 12/07/08 01:44 AM
I recently blogged about the fact that General Motors had an Electric Car that was recalled from consumers and that those cars were destroyed (around 2003). That was incredible because those cars had technology that could have made America independent of foreign oil.
A comment from a fellow ActiveRainer referred me to a news clip for 1978 when actor Jack Nicholson demonstrated a hydrogen cell car that he was driving.
It is evident that we had the technology - but what no-one will answer is why it was never developed to be commercially viable. In spite of this, taxpayers are … (7 comments)

going green: The Auto Bailout - What really happened? - 12/06/08 08:15 AM
About 6 months ago, I posted a Blog called: Who killed the electric car, and why?
In light of the huge sums of money that the auto industry is asking for from Taxpayer's money, I think it's appropriate to revisit the question.
The technology was available to avert our dependence from foreign oil, but it was not allowed to become commercially viable.
Taxpayers deserve a comprehensive explanation as to what really happened - and why.

going green: Kanner Architects - Futuristic Gas Stations appear in Los Angeles - Going green with Helios House - 11/01/08 08:48 AM
Interesting and futuristic-looking gas stations are opening up around Los Angeles.
The first such unique gas station was Helios House, a BP site at the corner of of Robertson & Olympic Blvd in Los Angeles.
It's a self-service center that sells only unleaded gasoline. The station consists of a stainless steel structure covering all the pumps and has 90 solar panels that supply power for the station. The unfinished stainless steel design increases light reflectivity which in turn reduces lighting demand. Light fixtures throughout the site use LED lamps. which are controlled by photocells and motion detectors to control their operation. Rainwater is collected by the large canopy and pumped to … (18 comments)

going green: Honda FXC Clarity - "The Zero-Emission Sedan of the Future - A Reality Today" - 08/24/08 07:03 PM
While watching TV this evening I saw a commercial that really grabbed my attention - A new car that only emits water vapor into the air that we breathe.
This sounded like some futuristic car so I went online and discovered that Honda has already started leasing this new vehicle, the Honda FXC Clarity - and a few owners have even taken delivery of their cars.
Vehicles that use hydrogen with fuel cell technology are the cleanest around because they emit only water vapor into the air we breathe. These cars simply do not pollute. They can also use hydrogen from domestic energy sources, reducing … (8 comments)

going green: Seeing the wood for the trees - 08/21/08 05:15 PM
While reading through The Huffington Post today, I saw something that I hadn't heard about before: Sustainable wooden keycards for hotel rooms. What a brilliantly simple idea.
"Sustainable Cards LLC of Boulder has donated more than 70,000 wood hotel key cards to use at hotels throughout the Denver area" - Denver Business Journal.
I checked their website and I love their ideas: sustainable gift cards, membership cards, and hotel key cards.
This reminds me to "never overlook the obvious" .... and "not seeing the wood for the trees".

going green: Stop receiving snail-mail Junk Mail - 08/14/08 06:50 AM
I recently Blogged about snail mail "Junk Mail' and received a great comment from fellow ActiveRainer - Amanda Hendershot -  about an online service that can stop catalogues from being mailed to you.
The service is called Catalog Choice and by using this service you can arrange to have unwanted mailings stopped. For those vendors that don't respond to this service, the site supplies you with contact numbers to call to manually arrange to stop mailings.
The bottom line is that Catalog Choice "is an easy, free service that allows you to decline unwanted catalogs, reducing the number of catalogs in your mailbox and the … (6 comments)

going green: A waste of paper - Is it worth it? - 08/14/08 04:58 AM
With more and more people becoming sensitive to protecting the environment and reducing wastage, I am surprized at the continued use by marketing companies of  snail-mail "junk mail".
Each day when I check my mailbox (and I'm referring to my U.S. Postal mailbox), I find it crammed with store catalogues, credit card offers and pages and pages of advertisements. I never read the stuff, but simply trash it.
I asked the mailman if it's a nuisance for him to keep stuffing mailboxes with this junk - but to my surprise he said he's thankful for this mail because it helps to pay his salary (and bonuses) … (14 comments)
