As banks have tightened their lending criteria for homebuyers I've noticed a new strategy in their plan to lend money to the public.

It makes perfectly good business sense for Lenders to accurately and thoroughly check the credit-worthiness of prospective borrowers (finally) - but it now seems like there is over-kill.

On Monday this week, Merrill Lynch sold a $30.6 billion portfolio of mortgage debt for 22 cents on the dollar. The portfolio was sold to the Lone Star Funds, a Dallas-based investor.
