NAR doing a disservice to REALTORS, consumers and themselves - 08/29/08 01:29 PM
Here's a very interesting video (17,000 views on Youtube so far) of the Glenn Beck show explaining why Jon Washburn is right when he talks about NAR's failings.

Here's a very thoughtful post from The Big Picture, a well-read economics blog, explaining the shortcomings of NAR's data. And here's Dr. Stan Humphries on Zillowblog talking about why NAR's preferred index --  median sale price -- is a flawed metric. With NAR refusing to admit that the Emperor has no clothes, it's no surprise that homeowners misunderstand what their house is worth.
The bottom line is that NAR has sorely damaged … (72 comments)

John McCain: How Many Houses Does He Own? - 08/29/08 11:42 AM
Are we done dissecting how many homes Republican nominee John McCain owns? Not yet. Here's a post about John McCain's houses that unifies and organizes all that has been written, discussed, and YouTubed about his many homes. Hopefully, it sets the record straight once and for all. Once you read it,  you will see there is no easy answer. Now, let's hope his VP choice Sarah Palin doesn't have a house problem.
P.S. JibJab hits another home run with its "Time for Some Campaignin" video.

US economic stimulus package stimulated us - 08/28/08 01:26 PM
A few months ago, I explained why I doubted that the handout, er I mean the "federal government tax refund stimulus package", would help the economy. Well now we have data to see if I was right or not.
Turns out I was wrong. Sort of.
I speculated that consumers would do what they said they would do with the extra dough: pay down bills (42%) and save it (21%). That's where I went astray. You should never believe the American consumer when he says that he's going to save money. Apparently when a pollster asks us what we're going to … (1 comments)

On Bloomberg TV discussing home prices - 08/27/08 06:06 PM
Was on Bloomberg television last week discussing home prices.

Of course, all real estate is local. So here's information on Los Angeles home prices, San Francisco home prices, Seattle home prices, and US home prices.

Humor is in the eye of the beholder - 08/27/08 05:49 PM
Here's a Zillow video that some friends of Zillow (including a former employee) put together. Some people find it hilarious; others find it sophmoric (though the two certainly aren't mutually exclusive!).

Enjoy.

Homeowners are delusional - 08/06/08 08:23 PM

This won't be new news to any of you listing agents working with frustrated sellers, but most homeowners haven't adjusted their expectations of value yet. Everyone realizes that house values have declined; but no one wants to believe that their home has declined in value. Here's the data from ZillowBlog to prove just how delusional homeowners are when they ask themselves "what is my house worth?":
62% of U.S. Homeowners believe their home’s value has increased or stayed the same in the past year. In reality, 77% of U.S. homes have declined in value over the past 12 months. While … (37 comments)

What's new at Zillow? - 08/04/08 08:57 PM
It has been too long since I've written a post explicity about Zillow. I try to keep you current on what's going on at my company, but I'm pleased to tell you that things are happening so quickly I have hardly had time to keep up.
So here's a recap of what's new at Zillow over the last few months:

Broker Advisory Board: Zillow announced the creation of a newly formed Broker Advisory Board, full of industry heavy-hitters. Steve Baird, president and CEO of Baird & Warner Ken Baris, president of Jordan Baris Bob Blount, CEO of RE/MAX Allegiance Sherry … (4 comments)

NPR interview with me - 08/01/08 01:16 PM
Here is a half-hour radio interview with me that just posted online but won’t air on the radio until September. I did the interview a few months ago in New York. It will air on the XM/Sirius NPR station (though not on terrestrial NPR).
It's mostly about my Hotwire experience, but we also discuss real estate a bit. Towards the end, I give ActiveRain a nice plug.
It’s a very cool radio show – she interviews entrepreneurs for about 30 minutes. The host (Jess Harris) is a friend of mine from college. Mine is the last interview that she’s doing because … (1 comments)
