Racing Between Transactions

Charlie Dresen representing the U.S. Telemark Ski Team in the 2015 FIS World Telemark Ski Championships in Steamboat Springs, CO

This week Steamboat Springs, CO is playing host to the 2015 FIS World Telemark Ski Championships. This is a big deal for us tele skiers for 2 reasons:
1. This is only the 2nd time that the U.S. has hosted the World Telemark Ski Championships and
2. Since Telemark skiing is not an Olympic sport (don't get me started), THIS event serves as our Olympics.

It is also a big deal for me because I … (4 comments)

Steamboat Springs, Colorado Cross-Country Skiing
Another Magical Day Skiing on Rabbit Ears Pass It’s hard to believe but Alpine Skiing is not the only winter sport in Steamboat Springs!
The way I view back-country skiing is  it is basically getting my exercise while taking a hike in the woods with a few moments of exhilaration (or fear) as I turn in the undisturbed powder. The beauty and peace of the Colorado Mountains just can’t be beat.
Rabbit Ears Pass is one of my favorite haunts. It’s a 20 minute drive from Steamboat Springs to most of the trails which are … (1 comments)

Learn a Little About Me - US Telemark Championship Ski Races Begin The US Telemark National Championship Ski Races will be held in Steamboat Springs February 22-24. Why do I write this? Because it tells you a little bit more about who I am. Last year, at the age of 48, I won the National Championship in New Hampshire.  And no, that's not for my age group, that's overall. Yes, the majority of my competition is much younger than I am. But my competitive spirit and drive just comes out of me when I race.

Steamboat has a reputation for being a very friendly town and that friendliness pours over onto the ski slopes too. If you don’t know anyone in town, just ski by yourself one day and suddenly you’ll have 3 phone numbers and 2 new best friends. Well, that might be stretching it a little but if you make an effort, you can meet a lot … (3 comments)

skiing: Alpenglow Luxury in Steamboat Springs - 01/21/13 04:55 AM
Steamboat Springs Luxury Ski Home 2660 Alpenglow Way is truly a home; it's not just a vacation home.  The designer of Alpenglow had functionality and beauty in mind. I like homes that you can live in with a gaggle of people. Alpenglow Way has 5,277 square feet  and  5 bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms.  But the special part, that I think a lot of people can appreciate, is all the functional bonus rooms.
"Omigosh, Alpenglow Way is great!"  That's the response I get when people tour this home.

Of course, the kitchen is stellar with granite counter tops and professional grade appliances. There are … (0 comments)

skiing: Snow Blowers in Steamboat - Size is Everything - 01/10/13 09:53 PM
Snow Blowers in Steamboat - Size is Everything If you live in Steamboat Springs, locals will tell you, "get a good snow blower."  Period.   With many years of over 400-inches of  snow in Steamboat, you will soon learn that a good snow blower is as important as a good coat. We love snow here but you need to be prepared. In my opinion, the two most important things about choosing a snow blower is size and power. Yes, size matters.
SIZE. Snow blowers come in numerous widths.  Typically a a 24" to 30" wide snow blower will get 'er done.  POWER. … (7 comments)

skiing: Yippie, More Snow for Steamboat Springs, Colorado - 12/13/12 01:18 AM
Like bacon, snow makes everything better. In Steamboat Springs, snow provides us great skiing, makes the landscape sparkle, and provides the needed water for the rivers. So without snow, we tend to get SAD.

The forecast calls for SNOW.  With a slow start, the Steamboat Ski Area got off to a slow start primarily relying on man-made snow. Now I applaud the Steamboat ski area for we were skiing on schedule albeit just a few runs. But now, Old Man Winter has been hanging around Steamboat Springs, Colorado for the last two weeks and that's making everyone happy. Snow is just a … (2 comments)

skiing: Snowmaking Gives Steamboat Spring a Winter - Snowmaking Video - 12/07/12 10:27 PM
Thankfully, Steamboat Springs is making snow.  If Steamboat Springs didn't have snowmaking, we'd be doing a lot more fishing. My old stomping grounds Crystal Mountain in Washington State is getting dumped on with 28 inches over the last 2 days, here in Steamboat Springs, we're all still doing "the snow dance." Snowmaking is the lifeline to skiing for many Colorado ski resorts this year.
Across Colorado, these high pressure weather systems are keeping us out of the trees so far an on groomed runs kept alive by snowmaking.  So far, Steamboat's is off to a slow start this winter. But things … (0 comments)

skiing: Mother Nature's Got A Bee In Her Bonnet - 11/29/12 11:03 PM
Lack of Snow Affecting Early Season Bookings Good morning and happy Friday to all of my fellow Steamboaters (and the rest of you too)! In coming to the end of yet another week, as well as another November, this unseasonably warm weather has me scratching my head. We're stepping on the heels of December and instead of the snow covered landscape that's typical for this time of year, there's still plenty of grass, some of it even still green, to be seen all over town. What's the deal, Mother Nature?
Well, whatever the reason for the bee in her bonnet, Mother … (3 comments)

skiing: Easter Holiday Steamboat Springs Style - 04/05/12 06:11 AM
Easter Holiday Steamboat Springs Style Easter in Steamboat Springs won’t be a white one this year, but that doesn’t mean the Steamboat Ski Mountain won’t be hopping (yep, pun intended) with activity. Some people will be skiing the limited open terrain. If I planned a ski trip here and I wasn’t used to (or ‘spoiled by’ like us Steamboat locals) the “champagne powder” we’re known for, I’d probably ski some as well. Not this weekend though – there will be plenty of other things to do in the sunny mid 60’s weather Steamboat Springs’ is forecasted to have this holiday weekend. The … (1 comments)
