    <title>Cell Phones For Domestic Violence Victims:  A Community Call To Action</title>

&lt;p&gt;Recently, I&amp;nbsp;was sad to learn&amp;nbsp;of another domestic violence murder right in my own community, which is 11th murder of the year, two being children less than a year old.&amp;nbsp; We had 15 murders in all of last year. To make matters worse, the Orange County Domestic Violence Court has been abandoned due to budget cuts.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p style="text-align: center;"&gt;&lt;em&gt;"While a cost cutting measure for the courts, it stresses every other agency and in the end, costs taxpayers money and reduces accountability of batterers.&amp;nbsp; With implementation of this court in the past year we have seen a 25% increase in convictions and Batterers Intervention Programs court ordered", says Carol Wick, CEO of Harbor House. "At this time, it is critical that everyone call their state legislators and tell them you are outraged at what cuts to the courts are doing to victims.&amp;nbsp; The total amount required to reinstate the court - $270,000. That is such a small amount the larger scheme of things."&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As a survivor of domestic violence, this has always been an issue close to my heart. So in an effort to raise awareness in our local community, I've decided to coordinate on on-going cell phone drive at our office to benefit victims. These phones will be refurbished and reprogrammed with emergency phone numbers and redistributed free of charge to victims in need. These phones will become lifelines for domestic violence survivors when faced with an emergency situation. Donations can be dropped off at our office located at 6401 Raleigh St. in MetroWest. This program is designed to assist those borrowers with lower income levels than our other first mortgage programs.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Florida Heroes: &lt;/strong&gt;This program helps moderate income borrowers who are needed by a community to function. This group consists of workers in education, law enforcement, firefighters, EMT's, hospital and long term care facilities, and the military.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Florida First Program: &lt;/strong&gt;This program helps borrowers by offering a low 30 year fixed rate loan. It is for borrowers that need the low rates to make their monthly payments more affordable.&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Florida Plus: &lt;/strong&gt;This program offers a low 30 year fixed rate loan and 4 percent (4%) of the loan amount to borrowers as a grant to help pay down payment and closing costs.&lt;/li&gt;

&lt;p&gt;DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS offered by Florida Housing are as follows:&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Homeownership Assistance for Moderate Income Loan (HAMI): &lt;/strong&gt;Offers borrowers up to $5000 to assist with down payment and closing costs. This is a low fixed rate second mortgage repaid over 10 years.&lt;/li&gt;
