Cell Phones For Domestic Violence Victims: A Community Call To Action

Recently, I was sad to learn of another domestic violence murder right in my own community, which is 11th murder of the year, two being children less than a year old. We had 15 murders in all of last year. To make matters worse, the Orange County Domestic Violence Court has been abandoned due to budget cuts.

"While a cost cutting measure for the courts, it stresses every other agency and in the end, costs taxpayers money and reduces accountability of batterers. With implementation of this court in the past year we have seen a 25% increase in convictions and Batterers Intervention Programs court ordered", says Carol Wick, CEO of Harbor House. "At this time, it is critical that everyone call their state legislators and tell them you are outraged at what cuts to the courts are doing to victims. The total amount required to reinstate the court - $270,000. That is such a small amount the larger scheme of things."

As a survivor of domestic violence, this has always been an issue close to my heart. So in an effort to raise awareness in our local community, I've decided to coordinate on on-going cell phone drive at our office to benefit victims. These phones will be refurbished and reprogrammed with emergency phone numbers and redistributed free of charge to victims in need. These phones will become lifelines for domestic violence survivors when faced with an emergency situation. Donations can be dropped off at our office located at 6401 Raleigh St. in MetroWest. I would encourage people to get involved in any way. If we all work together as a community, we can start to make positive changes to help stop the violence. I've heard that research shows that this is, unbelievably, one of the most effective ways to reach victims.

Despite what some people may think, domestic violence affects all of us at on so many complex levels...take the blinders off, it's closer than you think.
