That Magical Day - February 29th - 02/29/08 09:33 AM
Today is such a special day that they only include it on the calendar every 4 years.
Wow, the last time we celebrated this date, I had never even heard of a blog. In reality they've been around since the mid 90s but not in real common usage until recently.
Along with the blog has come a host of other terms such as SEM, SEO, key words, tags, widgets, links, avatars, and so much more. I'm still learning about new ones, and I'm sure many of you know a whole more about this than I do. Still, they're part of the communication landscape that … (5 comments)

A Serious Return to Basics - 02/27/08 01:25 PM
As you may have heard - or possibly experienced firsthand - last night across the country at more than 7,000 locations, Starbucks closed their doors for 3 hours. This was planned.
It was all part of the return to basics strategy by returning CEO Howard Schultz. Isn't it amazing that he is so committted to the revitalization of his company that he would temporarily shut down the entire company all at once?
What a great message!
Sometimes assertive action is necessary immediately - regardless of a few inconveniences. A return to basics and focus on the fundamentals really is about the bigger picture of … (10 comments)

Integrity is a great trait to have - 02/25/08 03:29 PM
Friday was the George Washington's Birthday that many of us grew up celebrating, and last Monday was the new federal holiday honoring George and our other Presidents. That got me thinking about George, and the first thing that came to mind was the old cherry tree legend - the one about "I cannot tell a lie." Of course there's "Honest Abe" also.
Look at how many years have passed since Washington or Lincoln served in the Presidency, yet honesty is still ascribed to both. It is not limited to them. It's just that when we think of them we also think of … (3 comments)

Think Remembering Birthdays Is Hard? - 02/22/08 10:55 AM
If you think you have trouble remembering important dates, such as birthdays and anniversaries, just think about how George Washington must have felt.
Today, February 22nd, as any school kid could tell you, is Washington's Birthday, but technically he wasn't born on this date.
According to historical accounts (I wasn't there) George Washington was born on February 11, 1731 under the Julian calendar. That same year New Year's Day was celebrated in March. Then with the adoption of the Gregorian calendar in 1752, February 11, 1731 became February 22, 1732.
By the way, did you know that 1732 - the commonly accepted birth year … (1 comments)

A Lesson from President John F. Kennedy on Presidents' Day - 02/18/08 06:50 PM
In honor of Presidents' Day, I thought it would be good to look at something one of our Chief Executives had said and find a message in that. Immediately, I thought of some of the more prominent Presidents from the past such as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Then I remembered John F. Kennedy's Inaugural Address - with the memorable, oft-quoted line of "ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country."
This phrase can be interpreted many different ways and can serve those promoting volunteerism, welfare reform, and other efforts.
However, I choose … (2 comments)

Do You Love What You Do? - 02/14/08 10:16 PM
With today being Valentine's Day, I wonder how many people actually love what they're doing - especially those in sales?
Are you passionate about it? Can you really get excited about what you're doing?
Do you look forward to getting up each day and starting in making calls, meeting people, learning more about your market, resolving issues, making sales, and the other aspects of your business?
Oh, I know there are challenges and day's when you don't feel at your best, but basically do you feel that you are doing what suits you and do you love what you're doing?
Thomas Edison once said, "I … (13 comments)

New Year’s Resolutions - 02/10/08 11:36 AM
A lot of people have - or should I say had - New Year's resolutions for 2008, but as the wise philosopher Anonymous once said, "A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other."
So here it is almost the middle of February - you've had 6 weeks to try out your latest affirmation or wish.
How are we doing?
Did you resolve to lose weight, quit smoking, be more punctual, stop procrastinating, to be more active in the organizations you belong to, get more done, make more sales, spend more time with your family, read more, exercise … (4 comments)

For more sales, try “adopt-a-home” - 02/06/08 05:14 PM
Today many Realtors and new home salespeople are faced with an abundance of listings and available completed homes ("spec" or "inventory"). It's hard to focus on selling all of them at once, so here's an idea that I've been using.
If you have several homes to sell, pick one. It doesn't matter if it's the biggest, smallest, lowest or highest price, the shortest time on the market or the longest. It just doesn't matter which one you pick, but you must pick one.
Then to the relative exclusion of selling anything else you sell this home next - the one you have "adopted" … (6 comments)

The power of listening - 02/02/08 10:49 AM
Did you know that "listen" is an anagram of the word "silent" - and the other way around also? We learn so many things - especially from our customers - when we just take time to listen. Is it any accident that we have twice as many listening devices (ears) as we do for speaking (mouth)?
With a few well chosen questions about what someone is looking for, what they have already learned about the market, what they have already seen (online or in-person), their ability to make a decision, and the timing of that decision, making a presentation and a sale … (11 comments)
