The first quarter is counting down - 03/31/09 10:51 AM
In the closing seconds of the first quarter of 2009, do we have any special plays we'd like to run to make another score? Maybe just something to get some points on the board? I think many of us were looking for better economic weather than we received during the first quarter. There were plenty of sunny days, but there were many cloudy and stormy days as well - probably more than we had counted on or been prepared for. Well, that's late winter and early spring for you. Now to prepare for the second quarter. We have a little momentum.

It takes two ... - 03/31/09 10:13 AM
Ever notice how much better things work out when there's someone else involved? For instance, it takes two people (you and at least one other person): - to play catch (without just tossing the ball and catching it yourself) - to have a conversation (unless you enjoy talking to yourself) - to throw and catch a frisbee - to have a relationship - to achieve cooperation - to exchange referrals and information - to request and receive help - to have a customer to work with. ─── For more information on my coaching

Motivational Monday - "Looking Back to Look Ahead" - 03/30/09 07:17 PM
No, I haven't confused my seasons. I know it's spring. So do the trees. These colorful leaves that are unveiled in the fall are what is hidden under the green outside of spring and summer. It would be a gorgeous site to see the color starting now, but we might grow tired of it and not anticipate the coming of fall. Anyway, the leaves have a job to do producing clorofil to aid in photosynthesis to provide growth and sustenance for the plants and trees. Motivation - doing what we are capable of and expressing what lies within us because

It's a good thing we have computers - 03/28/09 09:16 AM
As I sit here composing my 600th Active Rain post, I'm thinking just how hard this would have been had I been limited to a traditional typewriter - manual or electric. I'm not a great typist. I am a pretty good speller, but not when I'm typing. The ideas and my fingers get ahead of my spelling. If it were possible (and of course we know that it isn't without scanning, uploading, and several additional steps) to type a post and then publish it - much like copywriters and reporters at newspapers used to do before computers came along - I'm

California one-ups Henry Ford - 03/27/09 01:05 PM
Back when Henry Ford started revolutionizing the auto industry with the manufacturing of his Model T, he reportedly told consumers that they could have any car color that they wanted - as long as it was black. Now, California is reversing that thinking and considering a proposal that come 2012 would make any car color except black (and maybe some other dark colors as well) acceptable. Ford did it for economic reasons. California says it is considering it for energy reasons. What does this do for basic black? Classic black? ─── For more information on my coaching and educational programs and

I lost my cyber voice - 03/27/09 09:04 AM
When I went to bed last night, I had a funny feeling that things weren't quite right in the internet world, but I thought that maybe no one wanted to reach out to me. Still, there had to be some spammers, phisers, and junk emailers who wanted to reach me - even if people that I wanted to hear from were not contacting me. Then the reality set in this morning - no email. I was cut-off. I couldn't talk. I was was feeling inadequate. I was feeling almost claustrophobic. Panic! What to do? It's a good time to be in the sign business - 03/26/09 10:23 AM
This is a good time to be in the sign business - no, not for the typical signs that businesses want and use. There is still a demand for those signs, and sign businesses will undoubtedly see an uptick in their business as existing businesses expand, ones that have folded need to have new signs in those locations for the businesses taking their place, and just the normal updating and replacement of signs that occur. The real opportunity for sign businesses is printing and installing signs about the economic recovery. Just think of the thousands of highway miles in this country

Avoiding deja vu - 03/24/09 06:04 PM
Remember the movie "Groundhog Day" with Bill Murray? He keeps repeating February 2nd until he gets it right. At first, he is irritated by the prospects of repeating the same day continuously until he realizes that he can use it to his advantage. He decided to test out ideas and learn things throughout the day that will enhance his performance the next day when he relives the same day again - only this time with a little more information that he had the previous day. While this is an entertaining movie, the message is that we need to build upon the

Florida regains top spot in business survey - 03/23/09 11:13 AM
Kudos again to Texas! In the 2009 survey by Chief Executive Magazine on the best and worst states for jobs and business growth, Texas retains its top #1 position that it has held the last 4 years. North Carolina moved up one spot from 3rd to 2nd. Florida regained its #3 ranking from 2 years ago that it had lost last year. Rounding out the top 5 are Georgia (4) and Tennessee (5) - both up at least one position from 2008. The bottom of the chart didn't show much change at all. Attitude favors the underdog - 03/21/09 11:46 AM
The NCAA men's college basketball tournament is in full swing. From the original 64 invitees that began on Thursday, the field has been reduced by half. After today's and tomorrow's second round games, another half of the field will go home. The question is how many of the heavily seeded teams have survived and how many were "upset" by smaller schools, lesser known schools, or ones with a less impressive record? I'm not looking for an answer, and the definitive answer to my question is not the point. The real point is that in any athletic contest (not to mention many

Forget spellechecker, how about a meaning checker? - 03/21/09 11:14 AM
Spellcheckers (I know it's "supposed" to be two words, but literary license lets me make it all one word) are OK - as far as they go. There are certain words that they don't catch, and there are others that they don't recognize. At least once a week, I have to Google a word or go to dictonary.com to find a word that I thought I was using and spelling correctly just to verify that I was. Then there are words that seem to go better together than apart, but spellchecker doesn't seem to care. "Everyday" is OK but "everytime" is

Spring is a state of mind - 03/20/09 05:31 PM
Spring officially arrived this morning. Maybe it doesn't look or feel very spring-like where you are. That's OK. It's nice to have the warm temperatures, the final bit of snow melting away, the fresh smell in the air, the colorful flowers blooming, and the trees budding out. Those are the outward, visible signs of spring. However, spring is state of mind also. In fact we didn't have to wait until today to begin our springtime attitude. Spring is for new starts, optimism, new projects, and renewal. Spring is refreshing. It motivates us to formulate new ideas and strategies and to let

It's official. Spring is here. It arrived today. We've already had the time change - that started putting us in the spring spirit. Flowers are beginning to grow. Snow and really cold weather is mostly behind us. March Madness is here. Major League Baseball is getting ready for the season. Easter is still 3 weeks off, but other than that, all the signs are pointing to spring - to a resurgence, a renewal. Let's use this freshness and newly acquired energy to have a great selling season. Focus on the big prize - 03/19/09 09:12 AM
I think that "focus" is one of the most important words to use in business - and in life for that matter. Whether it's working on goals or daily tasks, focus gets us directed toward the finish line. Success often is not measured - or even accomplished - just by the length of time someone pursues an activity, but by how diligent and on-point they were along the way. In a word, this is focus. With today's NCAA men's basketball tournament getting underway - "March Madness" as it is called - there are 64 hopeful entrants. Some have more physical talent

Hope x 64 - 03/19/09 08:22 AM
Today is March Madness - the start of the men's college basketball tournament to determine the national champion for Division 1. Since this time last year, every coach, every player, every team, every fan, every president, and every athletic director at the schools that play men's basketball have been focusing on this day. They have hoped to be good enough - or in some cases lucky enough - to get invited to take one of the 64 spots for the tournament starting today. This isn't a perfect system - it's single elimination and some teams with very good records didn't get

Get ready for the perfect storm in real estate that is coming - 03/14/09 08:33 AM
We’re not there yet; however, the storm clouds are showing signs of forming on the horizon. Hold on, this is not a weather report – it’s a sales analogy. For the past several months many people who have wanted to list and sell their homes have held off putting them on the market because they were waiting for prices to drop on replacement homes (either existing or new construction), and they needed more for their homes than they thought they could get. All the while interest rates have been quite low, yet only a few people have participated in the transactions

Some people just aren't getting the message - 03/13/09 02:28 PM
Forget about what home prices mighta, coulda, or shoulda been. Forget about how much a home was worth in 2004 or 2005. Forget about trying to get a higher price for a particular home than someone else with a similar home did a couple of years ago - because this home is much nicer than the one that already sold. Forget about just asking the 2005 price - thinking that this will be enough to offset a decline in market prices. Let's face it. It might be an owner that is just too attached to their home, really has too much

Don't Do as I Do, Do as I Say - 03/11/09 05:38 PM
In keeping with the proverbial advice offered by many a parent, President Obama is certainly setting a poor example according to his words. He says - and made a campaiagn issue out of it - that he wants no more earmarks. This after he already signed several pieces of legislation with them boldly entrenched in there - including the Stimulus Bill (Pork Spending Extravaganza). Now, he signs the Omnibus Bill laden with earmarks and vows to work on eliminating them. Do as I say? How many chances do you need, Mr. President? George Bush couldn't veto the excessive spending. Congress, what part of "secret ballot" don't you understand? - 03/10/09 02:08 PM
It didn't pass last time around, so the bill to erode one of the most fundamental of American rights was introduced in the Congress yet again today. What right is that? The right to vote by secret ballot. The "Employee Free Choice Act," or "Card Check" bill, is anything but what it proclaims to be. There's no free choice. There's someone looking over your shoulder helping you vote. There's someone moving the paper while you hold the pen. Choose the correct 4-letter word when driving - 03/07/09 07:43 AM
We have to drive. We have meetings to go to, the office, schools, the gym, the store, and any number of other places. Most of these trips require the use of our vehicle. However, we have a choice. We can let the pressures of the road get to us, or we can make sure that we are part of the solution and not the problem. Which is more important, being right or being safe? There are two words, both of them containing four-letters, that describe opposite responses that we can have to driving. The first is rage. This describes an aggressive,

Market forces are still working - 03/05/09 10:08 PM
At a time when price controls are being discussed and Congress has even suggested mandating the maximum a gallon of gas can be sold for, it's a real pleasure to see market forces actually controlling gas prices in our area. In recent weeks, they've been lower than they are now, and they've been a little higher, but they seem to have found an equilibrium for the moment. This, of course, is subject to change from outside forces such as reduced supply, interruptions in delivery, or surging demand. Barring any of those, we have a stable market for now. I'm not talking
