Putting Spending Into Perspective - 08/31/10 06:35 PM
A report just released by the CBO (Congressional Budget Office) reveals that the Irag War - as expensive as it was to wage over 8 years - was still some $150 billion less than the single Stimulus package. Actually the Iraq War expenditures were fairly constant over the last 8 years while the federal deficit grew at an extraordinarily high rate. In fact, if we had not been funding the War, the size of the deficit would not be all that much smaller. The deficit in 2009 and 2010 is nearly quadruple what it had been before the Obama administration began.

Workforce Housing Program Not Extended - Palm Beach County - 08/31/10 04:22 PM
Palm Beach County finally corrected one of their unnecessary programs by letting it sunset. There is an abundance of "workforce" housing in the County and likely will be even more as prices continue to adjust downward. Via Stephen P. Panczak (Keller Williams of Palm Beaches): Workforce Housing Program Not Extened - Palm Beach County On Monday night, the Palm Beach County Commission failed to approved the extension of the Workforce Housing Program by a 3-3 deadlocked vote. This program was aimed to create moderately priced housing, ranging from $125,000 to $265,000, for teachers, law enforcement, firefighters from extending into unincorporated western Palm

Embrace The Present - 08/31/10 04:11 PM
If we are so busy reliving and holding onto yesterday, today is of little value to us. This is a great quote and commentary that reflects this. Now Into The Single Digits - 08/31/10 01:21 PM
Today, as we close out August, the general Election on Tuesday, November 2nd is just 9 weeks from today. No more double digits. We need a new Congress. America is headed in the wrong direction. Congress thinks that the answer to everything is to spend more money - which wouldn't be quite so bad if they actually had money. They don't, and all of us should be fed up with giving them anymore of ours to waste. Motivation Monday - Final Days Of The "Summer Selling Season" - 08/30/10 12:58 PM
The Summer Selling Season" has been in effect since July 5th. It's that uninterrupted 60-day time from the 4th of July until Labor day when there are few, if any, distrations that keep us from focusing on sales and our customers from concentrating on our presentations. Except for a summer vacation or getting ready for back-to-school, our customer and we have been able to to concentrate on business. Now, with the Labor Day weeknd at hand, the "Summer Selling Season" is ending, and football games, Hallowwen, fall weather, school activities, and the fall routine are going to occupy the

EPA Gets One Right - 08/29/10 11:54 PM
The EPA had been petitioned to ban traditional lead ammunition - just in time for the fall hunting season. The Center for Biological Diversity wanted the ban under the Toxic Substance Control Act of 1976, a law in which Congress expressly exempted ammunition. The EPA was once again asked or invited to take on a Constitutionally prohibited, quasi-Congressional role and to pass legislation as part of the Executive Branch. Fortunately, this time, the EPA ruled that it “does not have the legal authority to regulate this type of product under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA)” and added that it is

Somebody (Us) Has To Pay For Those Grants - 08/27/10 05:11 PM
I think very few people ever make the connection between federal grant programs and the source of that money. It's not the governement - they don't have any money of their own. It's pass-through money that they collect from us. We likely are helping someone in a totally different State on a project that we're not that thrilled about - if the truth be told. I read about a $24 million grant as part of the Recovery Act Investments Stimulus Package to install broadband internet service to 8 counties in the Panhandle area of Florida. How About A Nice, Positive Political Ad? - 08/26/10 11:43 PM
This is a very positive campaign ad by Allen West, Republican candidate for Congress. No where in the message does he mention his opponent or anything about his opponent's record. That may come later, but this is a very refreshing, positive ad for America. In case you have been asking why no one can make an ad which talks about our values and doesn't smear their opponent, this is such an ad. By the way, West's opponent is incumbent Ron Klein. Klein is the one who canceled his scheduled town hall meetings rather than subject himself to angry voters.

All I can say is that the Post office should be pulling out of the red during the next couple of months. We know that we will have a new Senator, but today's elections will have little impact on that as 3 of the 4 major candidates will go through to the general elections. They thwart the will of the people. They abuse their expense accounts. They shout in the faces of their constituents. They vote spending bills that they have no way to pay for. Why Are We Not Surprised By This? - 08/19/10 03:15 PM
The new EPA regulation on lead paint is now said to be more expensive and more cumbersome to comply with than they envisioned. it is described by the Chair of the NAHB Remodelers as "a classic case of good intentions resulting in unintended consequences." Doesn't that summarize most everything the government tries to do. They don't look at the bigger picture. They don't look at all the ramifications. They don't run out the scenarios. Are we surprised? Privatization Of Social Security Is A Great Idea - 08/15/10 10:33 AM

Quality is in the Eye of The Beholder - 08/13/10 09:00 PM
So many companies use a tagline that says they build a quality product or offer value. I would hope so because that is much of a very special claim. Jay's Tuesday Free Enterprise Quote - 08/12/10 10:07 PM
From the pen of Jefferson, we need less government. Via Jay Markanich (Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC): "My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government" Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson read a lot of history. He was familiar with peoples, societies and historical circumstance. He read the philosophes and the politicians of times past. And I think he understood human nature. A government that has to pass some humongous bill so all can see what's in it is bad government. Politicians who cannot understand, and do not read, these same kinds of huge,

More Senatorial Tricks - 08/12/10 09:56 PM
Today, the Senate passed a $600 million border security bill - small potatoes compared to what they usually vote on and pass. Obama promises to sign it, but since he won't authorize the detaining of any illegals, this is all for show. Some 1,500 border guards are supposed to be hired in this program, but what can they do? Chuck Schumer, who sponsored the bill, claims that this measure gives Obama and Napolitano the "boots on the ground" to stem the tide of "crime and violence." This at the same time the government is fighting to get Arizona's law on illegals

Change The Language, This Story Is Still Phishy - 08/12/10 03:43 PM
This afternoonI got a phishy email scam written in French. This is a new one. I receive several phishy emails a week, but this is the first one in French. My French is quite rusty, but surprisingly I was able to read it with pretty good comprehension. It helps that all of these stories follow the same format. Just the money and the relationships differ. At any rate, I did much better reading it than I would have thought, but I don't think I'm up for any other language editions. The bottom line is that this is still phishy, and it

Election Season Going Into Final Turn - 08/10/10 11:04 AM
As the 2010 election season gets ready to make that turn for home at the Labor Day pole, more states are holding primaries today. Colorado, Connecticut, and Minnesota all voting today. Will we see still more surprises? Some incumbents have decided not to seek re-election, some have already been defeated at the polls. This is great news for all of us who want to see new faces - and new outlooks - in Washington. November 2nd is now just 12 weeks away. We have a chance to really put the brakes on this out-of-control, aggressive, irresponsible spending. It is up to

Don't Disturb Their Vacation - 08/10/10 10:52 AM
Congress is on vacation - until mid-September. That is a very good thing. Everyday they are not in session is another day we can breathe a little easier. That means that no new taxes or regulations are going to be passed. That all changed when they had to rush back to Washington to vote passage on a $26 billion spending bill - that they don't have the money for - to hire back teachers that have been layed off - and that is not a federal responsibility. Supposedly some 161,000 jobs nationwide are being "saved" by the $10 billion part of

A Rare August Day - 08/09/10 09:00 PM
Today was a gorgoeus South Florida day - quite atypical for August, but greatly appreciated. It felt more like a late spring day. Today was forecast to be stormy and started out that way with rain before 10 am. It looked like it was going to be a long rainy day - but that was the end of the rain. Yesterday, we set a one-day record for August rainfall with 2.25 inches in just a couple of hours. Motivational Monday - "Value" - 08/09/10 04:25 PM
Value has to do with what people receive. Substitute the word “worth” for “value.” People like to feel that when they purchase something that they got value — that they got their money’s worth or even more.First, we bring value to the table. When people consider working with us, they are looking for what we add to the equation. What do we bring to the relationship? If there is no value — real or perceived — they really don’t need to work specifically with us and can therefore choose to work with someone else who does add value — because we

If your home is still on the market it’s probably priced too high - 08/07/10 08:54 AM
Excellent advice. Pricing is key to selling your property. Via Buki Burke Ventura Coastal Real Estate (Prudential California Realty): If your home has been for sale for more than 100 days you're probably tired of looking at the for-sale sign in your front yard. If you want to sell your property now and get on with your life, pay close attention: Your price is too high! In good markets or bad, price is the key factor in selling a home. Regardless of location or condition, any home will sell at the right price. Properties that sell fastest sell closest to list

JFK Had It Right, But Obama is Not Carrying On His Legacy! Sorry Caroline. - 08/06/10 12:48 PM
Anyone who still thinks that we need to increase taxes or let the Bush tax cuts expire - which will dramatically increase taxes - take a look at what JFK had to say on the matter. Via Mike Saunders - Athens, Ga & Surrounding Communities (Keller Williams Realty - Greater Athens): In his 1963 Presidential Economic Report, President John F. Kennedy argued: Tax reduction thus sets off a process that can bring gains for everyone, gains won by marshalling resources that would otherwise stand idle—workers without jobs and farm and factory capacity without markets. Real Estate Supply And Demand: The Truth Is Coming Out - 08/06/10 10:32 AM

Via Century 21 First Realty: It seems that the lobbyists of the National Association of REALTORS and the National Association of Home Builders are losing control of their spin doctors and housing reports are starting to reflect the reality that we have been reporting in Tallahassee. We have been reporting a gross disparity between supply and demand in real estate for more than 3 years, and I suspect other markets are going to start to realize that they are truly in the same position. This has happened again. Counting today, this makes 4 times in the past 4 years with the County Commission and twice with the West Palm Beach City Commission. Integrity represents the essence of what we are. It is related to two other important characteristics that we admire and appreciate — character and values. Integrity is what defines us. It is our core. If we don’t have integrity, we’re not trustworthy, we’re not dependable, we’re not someone who can be counted on to perform, we’re not likeable. Strip away integrity, and we have someone who will do whatever it takes to be successful or to win friends — even if those activities are dishonest, unethical, unkind, hurtful, or illegal. Dishonesty and deceit are the antithesis of integrity. Doing what it

Time To Freeze Their Allowances - 08/02/10 12:43 PM
Governments across the country - local, county, state, national, and special districts - have swollen their budgets and the spending that those budgets allow on the coattails of the housing runup of 2004-2006. Building permit and other fees were pouring in. New roads, bridges, parks, airports, fire stations, schools, and other public capital projects - couldn't build them fast enough. Most people were getting raises. The economy was humming along. Then, all that changed. Unemployment passed the 10 percent mark, businesses closed, foreclosures, short sales, government motors and other major bailouts, oppressive new taxes, increased regulations with more fees and compliance
