Downtown St Pete has movies in North Straub Park every Thursday in May. What a wonderful place to enjoy dinner overlooking the water while waiting for the movie to start. Music begins at 7 and the movie starts at dark. Bring your own picnic or buy food from some of the Saturday Morning Market vendors. Movies are free but donations are appreciated.

downtown st pete: Surprising St Pete - 10/11/11 05:34 AM

St Petersburg just announced its new rebranding campaign - Surprising St Pete
Art scene.  Bay scene.  City scene. What a scene.
A haven for sports fans, art connoisseurs and serious foodies. The campaign touts the variety you can find in St Pete from helicopter rides to museums to great restaurants and lounges. Rodd up the streets at 9 pm? Hardly. Bars now stay open until 3 a.m. Just look at Tryst, next door to us, if you want to see activity.
Read more and see more photos.
The announcement was made in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, … (4 comments)

downtown st pete: Mainsail Arts Festival 2011 St Petersburg Florida - 04/11/11 07:47 AM
Mainsail Arts Festival 2011 is this weekend in St. Petersburg, Florida. It's April 16 and 17 at Vinoy Park in downtown St Petersburg. Wandering through this juried art show in a waterfront park in downtown St Pete is a great way to spend the weekend. $50,000 in prizes attracts a variety of great artists in various media.
The poster that I've photographed here was designed by Jim Holehouse of Winter Garden, Florida. You can buy the poster or a t-shirt with the poster on it at the show this weekend. Usually about 100,000 people visit the Mainsail Arts Festival. A wide … (1 comments)

downtown st pete: Architect Yann Weymouth in St Petersburg to discuss the Salvador Dali Museum - 08/11/10 11:20 AM
Friday architect Yann Weymouth was in St Petersburg to discuss the Salvador Dali Museum here in downtown St Pete that he designed. He's frequently here to oversee the construction, of course, but rarely do we have a chance to listen to him and ask questions. He was the speaker at the Vinoy Business Alliance lunch at the Renaissance Vinoy Hotel on Friday. The screen is showing a view of the spiral staircase in the lobby which extends up to what is perhaps the world's largest finial. It was fascinating listening to how his designs came about. You can see some renderings of … (8 comments)

downtown st pete: Showing Property with Blocked Streets - 04/05/08 12:56 PM
When Tami called agents to set up showing appointments for downtown St Petersburg condos this weekend, each agent warned about the problems to be expected with parking, since The Grand Prix is taking place and many of the downtown streets are closed off. Her response?  "Oh, it's a walking day!"
Isn't that what living in downtown St Petersburg is all about? That you can walk to everything?  One of the things I enjoy about showing condos in downtown is that we DO walk - from my office to each of the condos. That's the way to see what living here is all … (5 comments)

downtown st pete: St Petersburg Florida Downtown Waterfront - how will the voters vote? - 11/16/07 09:19 AM
Downtown St Petersburg Florida
is one of the largest - and in my opinion also one of the most beautiful - public waterfronts in the U.S. Nearly five miles of parkland keep the waterfront open and visible to the public. Yes, there are wonderful indoor and outdoor restaurants and shops and museums and residences - but they don't block the view. There are over 350 events a year in these waterfront parks, from art shows to music concerts, as well as all the daily uses, for walking or sitting or playing soccer or exercising your dog.
What's really unique is that this waterfront … (7 comments)

downtown st pete: We want Trader Joe's - 11/16/07 08:48 AM

Today's business section of the St Petersburg Times revealed that the owners of 100 Bay Central (first known as South Core, then as the headquarters of Progress Energy) are ready for a tenant or two in their building at 100 Central Ave in downtown St Petersburg. With 63,000 sq ft on the ground floor and 72,000 sq ft on the second floor, and several floors of parking garage above. The article suggested a Fresh Market or a Crate and Barrel. What I've been hearing from lots of downtown residents, though is that they want a Trader Joe's.

From its limestore-arched entryway to … (9 comments)

downtown st pete: Ovation Condos St Petersburg keeps interest high - 11/10/07 02:12 PM
With completion of Ovation in downtown St Petersburg some 18 months away, it's important to keep the interest of those who have already purchased. JMC, the developer of Ovation, arranged a tour on Thursday for new owners and friends of Ovation to go to Orlando to see the distribution center for Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. The group of about 20 was able to see and use the appliances that will be in their new condos - and some possible upgrades, such as a wine room. Those who purchased earlier received $100,000 from JMC for upgrades - current purchasers receive $75,000 - … (0 comments)

downtown st pete: Signature Place St Petersburg Florida construction update 8/24/07 - 08/24/07 10:58 AM

Signature Place condominiums moves forward every week. It's one thing to hear that a building has 34 floors, and it's another when you see it in relation to the buildings around it. Construction is now up to Floor 15 - not yet half way. The sail shape of the building is evident. Check out the finished product at the Signature Place website. After you see the renderings, click on the floor you like and see the floor plans for that floor.

You can still get a 1 bedroom unit in one of the lower "loft" buildings for under $400,000 - you don't … (0 comments)

downtown st pete: Signature Place St Petersburg Florida construction update - 08/11/07 09:27 AM

Signature Place condominiums in downtown St. Petersburg Florida are well underway with their construction. From this angle you see the long face of the building, which will be covered with glass. All of these units have a view of Tampa Bay waterfront - and most have a ringside seat for spring training for baseball at Progress Energy Field - or Al Lang Field, as we oldtimers know it.
Signature Place has taken photos each month of construction progress and posted them on their website. That's a great way for their out of town buyers to watch the progress.

downtown st pete: Creative Code Compliance - downtown St Petersburg - 04/28/07 07:39 AM

This may be effective marketing, but how, you wonder, is this Creative Code Compliance? Well, St Petersburg city officials are quick to enforce sign regulations, especially in downtown St Pete.
This hot dog vendor, one of many offering quick, inexpensive lunches people can take to the parks to eat (this one located just across from Signature Place condominium construction and a block from the Ovation condominium construction) decided to

downtown st pete: Veillard House - St Petersburg, Florida - 04/28/07 07:13 AM

The Veillard House in downtown St Petersburg, Florida, has had an interesting history. It was built in 1901 and designed by Henry DuPont for Ralph and Minnie Veillard. Veillard had a farm supply business/general storeand was in local politics. Originally from Laval, France, he came to St Pete via Canada, Baltimore and Ocala. DuPont designed several St Petersburg buildings, the most noteworth being the Don ceSar Hotel. He did not design a lot, as he stayed small with only a few draftsmen - he did his own electrical and mechanical drawings.
The crenelated or rusticated concrete blocks are typical of the St Petersburg … (16 comments)

downtown st pete: Ovation Construction Progress - downtown St Petersburg Florida highrise condo - 04/22/07 12:20 PM

Ovation Condominiums - St Petersburg, Florida

This looks something like a monument, doesn't it? It's one of 195 foundation supports for the new luxury condominium, Ovation, being developed by JMC Communities and The Sembler Company. Caissons - which can be from 40 ft to 100 ft tall, and 2 feet to 4 feet wide - are vibrated down into the ground hydraulically. This is much more pleasant for the adjacent owners in the Florencia condominium as well as the businesses and tourists in downtown - piledrivers pounding away for months wouldn't be very pleasant.
According to Steve Coppins, the Project Manager, the caissons … (0 comments)

downtown st pete: St Petersburg Florida Ghost Tour - 04/22/07 02:17 AM
The Detroit Hotel - significant in the history of St Petersburg because the story goes that two men flipped a coin over the naming of the city - the one from St. Petersburg, Russia won, and the one from Detroit, Michigan, was only able to name the hotel. The hotel was converted a few years ago into condominiums, many of which retain the original brick walls and wood floors. Just behind the hotel is Jannus Landing, site for many popular concerts.
This site is one of the stops on the nightly Ghost Tour of downtown St. Pete. Then you can learn who … (5 comments)

May 20, 2007, St. Petersburg, Florida:
Progress continues on construction of this downtown St Pete highrise condominium, Signature Place. Along the fence are panels showing the skyline and a sample kitchen from the building.
This construction is the West Building, which will have retail, offices and some condos. The developer, Joel Kantor, expects to be topped off by July 4th. The building should be ready for occupancy by March 2008. Kantor will be moving his office into the building as soon as it's finished.
The condominium tower, with its signature sail shape of glass, is expected to be completed a year later, by … (0 comments)

downtown st pete: It's busy weekend inand around St Pete Florida - 04/21/07 07:41 AM
First - we have a balmy weekend - sunny days in the 80s and cool evenings in the 60s.
The main event - with awareness of the pun - is the Mainsail Arts Festival at the Vinoy Park in downtown St. Pete. Set in a broad park along the waterfront, there are approximately 270 artists displaying, chosen from over 1,000 applicants. There are paintings, sketches, woodworking, sculpture, photography, jewelry, mixed metals - lots of variety and of course, lots of food. Enjoy the music while you're there - blues, jazz, etc. Also in downtown St Pete the American Stage is doing … (5 comments)

downtown st pete: The Pier - St. Petersburg, Florida - 03/31/07 12:04 PM
The Pier - St. Petersburg, Florida
The Pier isn't my favorite building in St. Pete, but nonetheless it is a landmark. It has shops and restaurants and activites. Best of all, it has a wonderful view back to downtown St. Petersburg. You can reach it by car (valet parking, and if you're lucky, some spaces along the Pier Approach; by trolley from either the parking lot, your downtown hotel or your downtown business; or by walking.  Colorful awnings have dressed up this upside-down truncated pyramid, but I'm still a traditionalist at heart. I'd prefer to see a restoration of the old … (4 comments)

downtown st pete: Downtown St Petersburg Florida - Hampton Inn & Suites - 03/31/07 11:32 AM
All of our interesting buildings aren't old - here's a new (within the last couple years) buildings that was designed to fit well with our older Mediterranean style buildings. It's a Hampton Inn and Suites - no, not out in the suburbs, but right in the heart of downtown St. Pete on Beach Drive.
It doesn't have a dining room (other than for breakfast, of course) but why would you want one, when you can want to SO many excellent restaurants in downtown St. Pete.
It also has the advantage of being only two blocks from our office, and you pass Starbucks … (0 comments)

downtown st pete: Grand Prix Weekend in St. Petersburg Florida - 03/31/07 10:23 AM
Grand Prix weekend St Petersburg Florida
This is Grand Prix weekend in downtown St Petersburg. Yes, it's Indy Cars right along the waterfront. Downtown streets are closed off for several blocks from the St Petersburg Yacht Club south to the Albert Whitted Airport. Lucky people can watch from their balconies, or their large yachts - the rest will need to pay admission to the grounds or the bleachers. With sharp turns, this can be an exciting race. You may want to bring earplugs or Bose headphones, because it certainly is loud. It's more fun when you pick a favorite - usually … (0 comments)
