kenwood: Is there really glass there? - 07/05/08 07:52 AM
"Is there really glass there?", asked everyone who looked at it - and even then, each one had to go up and touch it to be sure.  Though "Museum Glass" is more expensive, it's startling in the difference. With a shadowbox piece of art, it's even more evident.
That was my biggest Aha a week ago when I attended an opening party for The Frame Shop in the historic Grand Central Business District of St Petersburg. The new business is owned by new residents (and clients) Susan and Jeremiah Rohr, who have settled into a wonderful old bungalow in the Kenwood … (5 comments)

kenwood: Mischevious Elves - 12/20/06 08:16 AM
Recently I wrote about a St. Pete neighborhood called Kenwood. I just learned about a holiday tradition in historic Kenwood:
The Kenwood Elves are an incognito group of pranksters who scout the neighborhood and decorate homes whose owners have made minimal or no efforts to decorate their homes. They string strands (often used) of lights, garlands and trim around the porch and yard. From these they hang unique items, such as empty cans, old socks and underwear, plastic or foam cups, broken ornaments and tea towels.
So far, the dozen plus elves have never been caught.
Most recipients accept this as neighborhood spirit … (2 comments)

kenwood: Kenwood neighborhood, St Petersburg, Florida - 12/16/06 09:39 AM
Kenwood is an older neighborhood with lots of bungalows. A decade ago it was deteriorating, and not very appealing. Then the transition started! People started renovating the bungalows, and creating a community. Many of the streets are brick, and there are large trees for shade. Even picket fences on some of them. Generally detached garages with alley access, some of them with apartments above (before buying, be sure to verify with the city whether or not that garage apartment can be rented). The neighborhood association became active, and held events in the neighborhood park, Seminole Park. They established an annual tour … (1 comments)

kenwood: Architectural Integrity - 08/01/06 04:20 PM
Today most buyers/owners are looking for architectural integrity, not a mish-mash of styles all in one house.  We have many bungalow style homes in both the Old Northeast and Kenwood neighborhoods of Saint Petersburg.  My son and daughter-in-law lovingly restored a 1910 bungalow, The House That Jack Built. One of the characteristics of the bungalow style is an open front porch. Over the years, their porch had been enclosed by screens and jalousie windows (a series of glass louvers, about 6" high, that open out with a crank). They enjoyed this, as it provided privacy from the street, and was a … (0 comments)

kenwood: Bigger Isn't Always Better - 07/26/06 09:56 AM
Despite national statistics that the size of a home is increasing each year, and the McMansions that are sprouting up all over, there are proponents of having a smaller but better designed house. Sometimes the bigger house is for our things, rather than for us. Sarah Susanka has written several books on this. Her original book "The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live" is my favorite. Susanka discusses how to design a home by how we use it, aligning spaces so you visually see beyond the room, providing for alcoves for certain activities rather than … (1 comments)
