A weekend of viewing wildlife, hiking and a little fly casting in central Montana.
Rambled out of the flathead, cruising down hwy. 83 in the Swan Valley. It's around two in the afternoon, a beautiful clear sky. At Condon the group was hungry, was decided to stop at the Condon Store for some sandwiches from there deli and few snacks. Once re-fueled down thru Seeley at Clearwater Junction headed up through the Blackfoot Valley over Rogers pass out upon the Great Plains.

Once on the plains, took a right on hwy 434 to Wolf Creek. Took a turn on recreation rd along the Missouri River below Holter Dam. The "MO" was running high & off color, along with plenty of drift boats all about. For the technical fisherman a great place to test your skills. This a beautiful drives with lots of wildlife along the way. The old Steel Bridge was in the movie The Untouchables. More on the stream down river another time.
We entered I-15 passed through Great Falls, then east to central Montana. The casting crew was hungry again at Belt. We dropped down the Belt Creek and Belt. Stopped the Harvest Moon bar for some local brew and brat. I personally like the Pigs Ass Porter, the rest of the group when for Beltian White with a slice of orange.
We arrived in Lewistown, around 10:30 pm and settled in for the night.
Out of bed before the rest, and headed downtown for a great discovery. While looking for wifi I found the Rising Trout Café. This place has the incredible baked goods. Leaf the owner also roast small batches of coffee which is awesome. The Rising Trout is also a book store. Leaf is also an artist and sells her paintings here along with notes cards of her paintings. The Rising Trout Café if worth going out of the way for.

Upon leaving the Rising Trout, found the rest of the gang & headed into the Little Belts for some hiking, fishing, along with mingling with the wildlife. We stopped by the Judith and the original forest service cabin.

The Judith was really muddy, so deeper into the mountains. We went, for more fun. We connected with a golden eagle which interacted with us. Out on Russian flats saw a few head of elk, and caught several fish in the creek.
In the morning we fish a local creek east of town on some private land. Caught a couple of rainbows, packed up and headed back into the sunset to home.
Well off to a riffle / till next drift

It's Friendship
It's as old as man himself,
yet as new as the moment or the next.
It's ever changing
and some how ever constant.
It's stronger
thanb any wall ever built.
it overcomes politices
and national barriers.
It can't be blinded by strange customs
or blocked by foreign languages.
It has been written about
and analyzed by wise men;
yet it has never been defined,
and never will be.
You can't see it or touch it;
yet it is everywhere.
It survives weakness and neglect,
thrives on thoughtfulness.
tis possibilities are infinite;
its strengh limitless.
it's what makes man human,
what makes life worth living.
It's friendship.

A perfect mother's day weekend , finally a warm one after winter has been hanging on with a grip of not wanting to let go this year. Took a beautiful drive to Bozeman the night before anticipating the mothers' day caddis hatch.

Crashed on campus with some student I know after having dinner downtown. A woke early to pack a lunch and head to the local City Brew to jump start the day. After pumping the blood up with a few shots of java, headed over to Fins and Feathers to talk with Rich and Charles about the river conditions on the Madison. They suggested going up to Bear Trap Canyon below the dam for most of day, then head down river late afternoon.

Upon reaching the parking lot and rigging 9' leader #12 prince nymph and a # 8 Crayfish pattern. After rigging up heading down to the river stopped to talk with a couple of guys in the parking lot. Woody and Scott from Las Vegas. They have been here for a couple of day's waiting for the caddis to hatch. They had a couple of great days using streamers and nymphs.
Headed down to the first run and started at the bottom of the run, working my way up. Upon my fourth drift I hooked in to a freight train of a rainbow barreling down stream. After a several minute tug of war int the ragging current a beautiful 18" rainbow is resting in the water at my feet. As I reached in my vest for a camera the rainbow regained its breathe and bolts, snaps the leader, leaving me standing there with a blank stare and a rush of joy for having been there, to witness such beauty in its purest form.
On the second day, I headed up into the Bear Trap Wilderness area. The day started clear and sunny. The early morning fishing was slow and the scenery grand. Around mid morning hatches were appearing fishing began to pick up with a 16" rainbow on a squirrel tail nymph. Green drakes and little stones began to appear in the air around me. I changed to my holographic hare's ear and continued to catch 14" & 16" rainbows till mid afternoon. Caddis Hatch wasn't as prolific as the evening before.
I decided to call it a weekend and head down to Ale Works for a local brew and a burger. Along with some good conversation with the Jen the bartender-musician. A good time was had by all.
