I'm often asked this question by different people who are considering purchasing a home, but for whatever reason can't do so until later in the year. The House today and the Senate yesterday passed legislation to extend the $8,000 home buyer tax credit to May 1, 2010, for first-time buyers and add a $6,500 tax credit for repeat buyers if they've lived in their home for five of the past eight years. Home prices are capped at $800,000. The legislation in both houses was included in a bill to extend unemployment benefits and is expected to be signed by President Obama shortly. With the First-Time Home Buyer Tax Credit deadline quickly approaching, the Internal Revenue Service recently reminded potential home buyers they must complete their first-time home purchases before Dec. 1, 2009 to qualify for the special first-time home buyer credit. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act extended the tax credit, which has provided a tax benefit to more than 1.4 million taxpayers so far. 
The credit of up to $8,000 is generally available to home buyers with qualifying income levels who have never owned a home or have not owned one in the past three years.
