Thanksgiving and a beautiful drive up the California coast - 11/30/11 07:39 PM

We had a nice Thanksgiving in San Luis Obispo this year.  Jon’s parents are elderly and not well, and we didn’t want them to spend the holiday alone, so we drove down there and spent a couple of days, and fixed dinner for them.
In previous years, we have dragged a bunch of stuff down there and cooked it there on unfamiliar stove and oven, etc, and struggled to find room in the fridge for what we brought.  Last year we did things the easy way when we brought dinner to my elderly Uncle Freddie.  We ordered a Thanksgiving Feast … (6 comments)

How building a huge tree of cans can help thousands - 11/22/11 11:50 PM

So have you seen those huge Christmas trees made of cans of food in Sunrise Mall in Citrus Heights or at the Secret Garden in Elk Grove?  Have you wondered what that was all about and how they were built?
I have been honored to work for some time on the Sacramento Association of Realtors Christmas CanTree Committee.  What we do is work all year to raise funds for our local Salvation Army to help feed needy families during the holidays.
All year long we hold fundraisers, gather donations of goods, services, money and food from generous area businesses and … (6 comments)

Market trends in Sacramento County CA - 15 months through October 2011 - 11/20/11 09:53 PM

As I have mentioned in previous posts, especially those with market reports, Sacramento County is a diverse area, with some very different neighborhoods, and communities like Fair Oaks where the neighborhoods are such a mix that it can be difficult to gather meaningful comparables for someone not familiar with the community.
For example on my street, there are a few upper market tract homes at one end, then a mix of old and new, huge and tiny on my block.
Going down the street from there, there are a couple of “McMansions”, a couple of older estates, and … (3 comments)

The one that got away – and taught me a lesson! - 11/19/11 08:56 PM

The one that got away – and taught me a lesson!
This story is one that most all of us have experienced, and try as I might, I cannot get most new agents to believe me when I tell them “DO NOT do this!”  I guess everyone has to learn some things the hard way.
When I was one of those new agents, many years ago, I wondered how I would ever get some clients, so the first time a couple came to me and wanted me to help them buy a home, I looked in the MLS book (told … (49 comments)

Come to the Mountain Mandarin Festival the weekend before Thanksgiving! - 11/19/11 03:53 PM

This weekend is one that my husband and I look forward to, because we love Satsuma mandarin oranges!  It is time for the annual Mountain Mandarin Festival in nearby Auburn, California.

The festival is held annually the weekend before Thanksgiving, and it celebrates the harvest of the Owari Satsuma Mandarin oranges that are grown in Placer County, right next door to Sacramento County.

In addition to the great taste of these delicious little fruits, the USDA has extolled the wonderful health benefits of them.  If you will be within an hour's drive of this great celebration, I … (3 comments)

Market trends in Orangevale CA - 15 months through October 2011 - 11/19/11 02:04 AM

Orangevale California is one of the older communities in Sacramento County, with a mix of older and new upscale homes, small tract homes and rural acreage.  There is a lot of history in this community, and some lovely newer neighborhoods.
There is something for everyone in this quiet community, and lately I have been getting calls from prospective buyers who specifically ask about Orangevale, so the word is out:  Orangevale is a good place to live.
Orangevale suffered a bit during the housing crisis, but like, Fair Oaks, Orangevale was not impacted as significantly as many other areas, and … (3 comments)

Market trends in Fair Oaks CA - 15 months through October 2011 - 11/18/11 10:17 PM

I live and work in Fair Oaks, California - a wonderful place to buy property -- whether for your home or an investment.
We have all been immersed in news and experiences that have told us that when the housing bubble burst, prices came crashing down, with many homes suddenly having to sell for as little as 45 percent what they sold for a couple of years ago.
Happily for Fair Oaks, California, the experience has not been as bad.  The news usually reports national numbers, and we must all keep in mind that what impacts on one … (3 comments)

Shop Small Business Saturday November 26! - 11/14/11 07:39 PM

Shop Small Business Saturday November 26!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving is the second annual Shop Small Business Saturday, the project of an organization dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.
On Saturday November 26, 2011 you are asked to do your shopping and other business in some of the smaller businesses in your community.  The big stores and corporations will be there the next week, but our small businesses are struggling in this economy.

And it’s not just stores, but restaurants and services as well.  If you can show … (36 comments)

Your Buyer Doesn't Care! - 11/12/11 11:29 PM
This is a great list of things every seller should consider.  You should think of it this way:  Once you have decided to put your house up for sale, it is no longer just your home.  It is now inventory you want to sell, and it must be made attractive to the widest possible market, and made as easy as possible for the public to view it.

Is Matt Lauer selling Old Spice? - 11/11/11 10:53 PM

You are probably aware of the fact that every year the Today Show does “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?” in which Matt goes to a different exotic place in the world every day for a week, usually travelling tens of thousands of miles that week.
Each evening he gives a very cryptic clue and then in the morning, his co-hosts try to guess where he is that day.  His itinerary is kept so secret that they almost never figure it out, nor do the viewers.
Today was the last day of this year’s “Where in the World”, … (4 comments)

What I'm especially thankful for this Thanksgiving - 11/07/11 05:45 PM

As Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts naturally turn to the many things for which we are thankful.  Of course I’m thankful that my husband Jon and I and our children and their families are all well. This year especially, I am also thankful that Jon has a job he really likes.
He was unemployed for more than a year and a half, and that was a stressful time – especially since my real estate sales seemed to slow a bit during that period too.  He worked hard even while unemployed – spending about as much time and energy looking for … (6 comments)

Free meals for all military and veterans on 11-11-11 ! - 11/06/11 04:22 PM

Friday, November 11 (11-11-11) is Veterans Day.  There are many living veterans of past and present wars and we currently have thousands of servicemen and servicewomen on active military duty, and we owe our thanks to all of them.
There are many ceremonies throughout the country planned to show our appreciation – most churches and cemeteries and many community centers will honor the fallen as well as those surviving more recent wars and now serving.
One great company is honoring them in its own way.  On November 11th Applebee's Restaurants will be serving free meals to all veterans and active … (8 comments)

Buyers and Sellers: Are you confused by the alphabet soup used by Realtors? - 11/02/11 11:28 PM
If you are thinking of buying or selling your home, are you confused by all of the trade jargon and abbreviations you see and hear?
I hear many real estate agents who tend to use trade language and abbreviations with their clients and prospects.  From the looks on the faces of the non-real estate pros, it seems clear that they often have no idea what those agents are telling them.I accompanied a buyer couple to an open house recently and the listing agent began spouting all kinds of sales talk that she apparently thought would inform my clients about the … (11 comments)
