Have you tried the cannoli at Fabian's Italian Bistro in Fair Oaks? - 06/30/12 06:21 PM
Have you tried the cannoli at Fabian's Italian Bistro in Fair Oaks? Yummy pastry filled with white chocolate mousse. Mmmmmmm. Fabian's has much more than desserts, however. In fact it was voted Best Fine Dining in Fair Oaks by readers of Fair Oaks Patch. Although Fabian's is a casual dining restaurant, the menu is first class, with many traditional Italian dishes and sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Fabian's also caters. They make a different and delicious lasagne: fresh pasta, bolognese, bechamel, parmigiano-reggiano, caramelized onions and marinara. Now doesn't that sound good? It is!Or try one of the best burgers

I love Fair Oaks Village in Fair Oaks CA! - 06/30/12 04:11 PM
I love Fair Oaks Village in Fair Oaks CA!One of the things I love about Fair Oaks is that it is difficult to describe in a way that would let you know what type and size of homes you might find here. Fair Oaks began in the late 1800s in the area now known at Fair Oaks Village, and the first settlers moved here to raise orange, olives, and other crops in the areas north of The Village. The lack of water made it difficult until a bridge was built across the American River, giving them access to water that they

What can I say? I love Fair Oaks CA! Let's check out the Sunrise Hills - Chicago Heights area of Fair Oaks. Have you ever been to Raging Waters Sacramento? - 06/28/12 08:03 PM
Have you ever been to Raging Waters Sacramento? If you haven't, you are missing a really fun experience. There are several rides and slides, including body slides and tube sides (some rated extreme), wave pool, an 800 foot long river, volleyball court, a children's play area with kiddie slides, water toys, a lagoon with pirate ship, and fun for all ages! There are also food vendors for meals and snacks. I guess you can see why I like this place, and it is a great place to take the grandkids when they visit, although my adult daughters love it even without

In the Sacramento area? Come to a cruise-themed wine tasting! Fun! Food! - 06/27/12 10:03 PM
If you are in the Sacramento area, or within easy driving distance, and you want to have a wonderful evening and support the Salvation Army, come to our cruise-themed Sip N Support party on August 10, 2012. As you may know from my previous blog posts about events, I am on the Christmas CanTree Committee of the Sacramento Association of Realtors, and each year we work all year to raise money for needy families through the Salvation Army by sponsoring and encouraging fundraising events. Over the years that we have been doing this we have raised over $2 million, and

Safe and sane also applies to open houses in Sacramento CA! - 06/26/12 07:43 PM
Safe and sane also applies to open houses in Sacramento CA! Open houses are a great way to expose your property to a wide number of potential buyers. I believe in using every means possible to show my listings to as many people as I can, and open houses are an important part of that strategy. At each open house, as guests come through, even if it turns out that this is not the house for them, I ask if they know anyone who might be interested. I invite the neighbors to attend and suggest that they might have an opportunity to

The Miller Park neighborhood in Fair Oaks CA is a great place to live! - 06/25/12 07:17 PM
The Miller Park neighborhood in Fair Oaks CA is a great place to live! At its center there is the wonderful Miller Park, and the homes around the park make up one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Fair Oaks CA. You can walk to the tennis courts from your home, watch the kids playing baseball or climb on the playground equipment, or have a picnic in beautiful surroundings. Some people like to simply lie on the grass and relax, enjoying a quiet place to read, or even taking a nap!Miller Park is at the corner of Sunset Avenue and Kenneth

Phoenix Field and Phoenix Park - a great neighborhood in Fair Oaks CA! - 06/25/12 10:13 AM
Phoenix Field and Phoenix Park - a great neighborhood in Fair Oaks CA! Many current visitors and residents in Fair Oaks CA are unaware that there used to be a pioneering small airport right here. It was very popular before larger airports were built, but eventually it was turned into Phoenix Field residential development and Phoenix Park. The neighborhood that occupies the old airport is full of street names like Kitty Hawk, Runway, Propeller, and other aviation-sounding names. Phoenix Park is a great family park in Fair Oaks CA, with a wildlife preserve, sports courts, walking trails, picnic areas, playground

Sacramento's own Broadway star is no longer Wicked! - 06/24/12 09:40 PM
Sacramento's own Broadway star is no longer Wicked! Teal Wicks, Sacramento girl and graduate of Natomas High School before earning her drama and musical theatre degree at UC Irvine, spent three years in Los Angeles, San Francisco and on Broadway in the lead role of Elphaba (the green-faced witch) in "Wicked". The New York Times said, "Teal Wicks absolutely stole the show with this virtuosic performance. ... It is not every day that I see singers with such virtuosity and mastery of the subtleties of the human voice. I'm certain we can expect many more great things from Ms. Wicks in

Low inventory in Sacramento County = fast sales = time to sell now!! - 06/23/12 02:35 PM
Low inventory in Sacramento County = fast sales = time to sell now!! Here is something that the media is simply not reporting enough: Now is a great time to sell! In Sacramento County, California, if you have a Home to sell, there are buyers for it - and those buyers will compete over a well-priced home. The problem for willing buyers these days is that there are not enough homes for sale, so people are bidding over the listing price and we are seeing bidding wars in our area, with folks trying to outbid each other. So if you have

You will love The Elephant Bar in Citrus Heights CA! - 06/22/12 11:24 AM
Normally when I write about a local area restaurant or business, it is one that is a small business rather than a chain, but I have to admit that if I counted the number of times I've been to any restaurant in the last couple of years, the winner by far would be The Elephant Bar in Citrus Heights. My husband and I simply love the place and we have taken so many out of town visitors there that they ask to go there when they are in town. It is also a favorite place to have lunch with clients. The place has

Great food, service and atmosphere at Village Bistro in Fair Oaks CA - 06/20/12 09:41 AM
Fair Oaks Village has many delights, but if you come down to the Village to shop at the Farmers' Market on Wednesdays or just to hang out at the park and watch the chickens, or even to stop by and see me at our office in the Village, I know you will love stopping at the Village Bistro for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a small restaurant in a historic building, conveniently located right next door to our office. You have the option of eating inside or at one of the sidewalk tables where you can enjoy the fresh air

Wild Bill hickok, Buffalo Bill & others helped start our mail system - 06/19/12 12:28 PM
In these times of instant messages, email, and Skype, the regular postal service, what is often called "snail mail" appears to be on its way out. But carrying the mail across the country has a rich history that we should remember, even as it begins to disappear. And there are some history lovers who are doing their part to remember the very beginnings of mail delivery to California. The Pony Express ran for less than two years, from April 1860 through October 1861. But for the past 20 years hundreds of riders have participated in an annual ten-day reenactment of delivering

Happy 70th Birthday, Sir Paul McCartney! - 06/18/12 07:45 PM
Happy 70th birthday, Sir Paul McCartney! You might simply think of Paul as one of the Beatles playing bass, and later in the group Wings, but he is so much more. While he first became famous as “the cute one” of the Beatles along with George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr, when the Beatles broke up Paul had a solo career, then formed the group Wings. For years now he has continued his solo career, recording, writing, and performing all over the world. Not to mention the fact that he has been kknighted by Queen Elizabeth. But that’s still

Happy Fathers Day, Dad - I miss you and Mom! - 06/18/12 07:33 AM
Today is Fathers' Day - one of those days, along with Mothers' Day, that makes me a bit melancholy. Okay, maybe more than a bit.My Mom and Dad have both passed away. I miss them both all the time, but on special days like their birthdays or days like this, I envy those folks who can still buy a special card for their parents, give them a big hug, and see them smile.I hear others sometimes complain that their mom wants them to call all the time or their dad doesn't agree with their political position so they just avoid their

The real estate market in Gold River CA is red hot! - 06/16/12 09:13 PM
Thinking of buying or selling a home in Gold River California? Gold River is an interesting town. It is a planned community, comprised of a number of villages, each designed and built by a different builder. There are a few condo communities, but most are single family homes, and all of the villages are immaculately maintained and beautiful, with parks that range from larger regional parks to little pocket parks nestled among the lovely homes. Gold River is bordered to the north by the American River, on the south by the 50 Freeway, and to the west and east by Sunrise

A Sacramento favorite: Mumbo Gumbo! - 06/15/12 05:09 PM
Those of us who live in the Sacramento area know that any festival or event at which Mumbo Gumbo will be playing is worth attending. They are our own local homegrown band with a fan base that extends way beyond our neck of the woods. I first got to know them several years ago when they played at the Fair Oaks Spring Fest. We were dancing in the street to their great mix of zydeco, rock, some country influences, boogie, and who knows what all. somehow it all goes together into their own distinctive style. Since then I have been to

Have you ever been to a Clawssical Music Recital? Here's your chance! - 06/14/12 09:47 PM
Betty Yimeng Teng is a name to watch. She is a junior at Mira Loma High School and an award-winning pianist. Her two loves are music and animals. She's been playing piano for 13 years, and she has donated a good portion of her winnings in competitions and scholarships to benefit animals. When she's not at the piano she's volunteering at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary and Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary. She is destined for even greater successes in her music career, and she is not afraid to tackle a challenge. She will perform a piano recital this Friday, June 15th,

Local Girl Lindsey Pavao, Voice semi-finalist, singing in the park! - 06/13/12 06:33 PM
Fans of the TV show "The Voice" will be familiar with Lindsey Pavao, who was a semi-finalist this season, and developed a huge fan base. She was mentored by Christina Aguilera. Lindsey is a local girl, from Manteca California, in the Sacramento area, and people in our area who never watched a competition show before were all watching her on The Voice and even calling in votes. She has a unique voice and style and we're all pretty proud of her around here. Well now you can have a chance to hear her in person for FREE! This Friday, June 15,

My favorite Sacramento artist: Merle Axelrad! - 06/12/12 05:11 PM
Here's a test. Does this picture look like a photograph? A painting? A collage? Clearly it's a photo, right? Wrong! It's a fabric collage by Sacramento artist Merle Axelrad (aka Merle Axelrad Serlin). If you get an opportunity to visit her studio, she is very gracious and will let you watch her work and will explain how she builds her collages, piece by piece. You will not believe her works are made from strips of fabric sewn together until you walk right up to them and see for yourself. The second Saturday of every month, Sacramento opens all of the art

The ABCs of critiquing political speeches and debate performances. - 06/09/12 08:22 PM
The ABCs of critiquing political speeches and debate performances.I'm about to confess to something that I have been doing since I learned to read. I know it makes me a nerd, but I enjoy picking up the dictionary and learning new words or at least clarifying for myself the shades of meaning of words I hear or read. So . . .Since this is an election year, there will be lots of speeches and debates ahead of us over the next few months in the local, state and national races. And where there are speeches and debates, there will be people asking

Transactions are so much easier without irrelevant demands. - 06/08/12 08:17 PM
Transactions are so much easier without irrelevant demands. In the last year I have run into some pretty demanding people. My clients have visited open houses and had the listing agent tell them the seller said anyone who wants to buy the property must use them as their agent (apparently thinking that they could save on commission or something). That happened twice - two different buyers at two different open houses! I guess that is legal, but it seems to be pushing the ethics and is certainly counterproductive, since my clients won't buy a house unless I will be representing them.

Have you ever noticed this? - 06/07/12 06:12 PM
Have you ever noticed this little notch on the ends of your wrap boxes? Did you know what it was for? One of my pet peeves years ago was trying to pull some wrap out of the box and having the whole roll come out, so it was useless to try to pull the right length and then use the cutter. If you have experienced this and you haven't paid any attention to the box end, take another look. The purpose of that notch, which must be punched out, is to keep the roll from coming out

A Roseville, CA resident who was a part of history! - 06/06/12 07:27 PM
Did you know that one of our neighbors in Roseville, California was a part of history? If you watched any of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebration this last week, you probably saw some clips that included something important that couldn't have been done without this lady's contribution. That's the tease, but first I will take a self-indulgent moment. Let me tell you a bit about my own connection to Queen Elizabeth, however tenuous. I am half English, and my father's family was granted a coat of arms by a predecessor of the present monarch, and I have the original

Now is a great time to sell your Sacramento County home! - 06/05/12 09:26 PM
Now is a great time to sell your Sacramento County home! A couple of years ago when the market had really been diving consistently, there were many homes on the market and not many buyers. Now that the buyers are out looking for homes, there are few on the market and each home that comes up for sale receives multiple offers if it is priced properly. And those on the market are selling quickly. Here are a few graphs to illustrate what I'm talking about. They reflect all sales in Sacramento County, in all price ranges. The first one

And the new World Record holder is . . . right here in Sacramento! - 06/03/12 06:36 PM
The Sacramento area has always had a lot to be proud of, but now there is one more thing, thanks to Mike Brown, owner of Capitol Dawg. The Guinness World Record for the most expensive hot dog now rests here in Sacramento, the capitol city of the great state of California. You can buy this amazing hot dog at Capitol Dawg, repeatedly voted as Sacramento's favorite hot dog stand. Sorry I don['t have a photo of the winner, but I did see it and it looks spectacular! Previous record holders had dogs priced at $100 and before that $69. The

When remodeling can lower your appraisal value! - 06/02/12 11:49 PM
Have you ever thought, "We could knock down that wall between these two bedrooms and make one large master bedroom" when you see a home with smaller bedrooms than you hoped for? I have been hearing that lately from buyers and I always tell them that reducing the number of bedrooms might reduce the market value of their home. Well, I got a chance to discuss the issue with an appraiser the other day, and he gave me some input that may be helpful to you if you are considering that. He says the difference in value between a 1 and

Communication is the key to success - and prevents frustration! - 06/01/12 10:15 PM
Communication is the key to success. If you hate to communicate, then you should not be in the real estate business. I'm not normally a ranter, but I have to say that there seems to be an epidemic lately of agents who simply won't communicate. I rushed to the office with my buyers last Saturday to submit an offer on a house they wanted to buy. The listing agent had told me they already had some offers and they were going to pick one that afternoon, and I didn't want my clients to miss out. She warned me not to wait
