The Texas Department of Transportation and municipalities keeps a count of the amount of traffic traveling the highways, streets, and roads owned by each entity. How do they do this? What is ETJ and what does it mean for a Real Estate Agent? ETJ is the acronym for Extra Territorial Jurisdiction and is the legal ability to exercise authority of the nearest town / city's form of government. Not all states practice this jurisdiction but Texas does. An ETJ is measured from any given city limit line to a mile out or more depending on the population of the adjacent town / city.
