Epitaph to a Copper Beech - 05/19/10 11:07 AM
This Beech tree was over 100 years old.Carpenter ants finally did it in.  It had firey red leaves that exploded open.
Just 4 hours to remove it.
Dozens of nests built in it over time. The final cut. Goodbye old friend.
The light pours in where shade held ground. Next winter you'll keep us warm.          Right now it's a new place to explore.

Wealth, Income and Power in America - 05/13/10 11:59 AM
Did you ever ask yourself, "How is the wealth distributed in America?" A revealing article entitled "Wealth, Income and Power"  by G. William Domhoff can be read at  http://sociology.ucsc.edu/whorulesamerica/power/wealth.html
This article elaborates on the relationship and differences between wealth, income and power.

As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 50.5%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable … (0 comments)

Silent Victims: Abandoned Foreclosure Pets - 05/11/10 03:45 PM
The Sad Truth Today’s pets are extremely domesticated. They are completely dependant on us for their survival. And we depend on them for companionship, unconditional love and acceptance. We value them as a member of the family and we trust them to act appropriately around our loved ones.
But the sad truth is that without us, they are helpless. Abandoned foreclosure pets cannot survive on their own. Most of them cannot find enough food by themselves and will starve to death. Others, depending on which part of the country they live in, are not equipped to deal with outdoor climates and … (7 comments)

Salvation Army Food Drive - 05/05/10 02:09 PM
In early May for the last several years, my church has participated in a food collection for the Salvation Army Food Banks of Greater Philadelphia.
We'll be knocking on doors in our neighborhoods this Saturday, May 8th and handing out a brown paper bag to be filled with staples like canned vegetables, rice, pasta, tuna fish, etc.
Like everything else in the country, times are tough on Food Banks. The less people have, the less they can give.
Two years ago as my husband and I were talking to neighbors and handing out the collection bags, a woman who lives … (7 comments)
