Whatever happened to the Butte County Railroad? It's a hiking trail!

Established by Diamond Match Company in the early days of 1900. Butte Co Railroad known as BCRR ran tracks between Chico, Durham, and Sterling City.

Four depots were formed, all built to serve the Diamond Match Company operations in Sterling City and Barber. BCRR soon added passenger and cargo services and Paradise formed the heart of a new Downtown and was the economic engine driving development for the town.

Soon the BCRR began to transport lumber and passengers from Sterling City. The now southern Pacific tracks ran between Chico, Durham and Sterling City. Regular train services between Chico and Magalia began November 2, 1903. Magalia deport was completed soon thereafter. Around April 8, 1904 Lumber and passengers were transported from Stirling City.

A famous train crash occurred in 1909. A new engineer lost control coming down from Magalia and a crash between Pearson and Neal road, killed two people. The rails were operated openly by Southern Pacific after 1912.

Stirling City sawmill closed operations on January 31, of 1958. Train operations were irregular at best until the Stirling city stud mill reopened in February of 1964. When the stud mill closed permanently the train tracks lay abandoned.

The last train traveled on these tracks in 1974.The
rails were removed by Southern Pacific Railroad and
the roadbed now serves as a memorial trail for biker
and hikers still today.

Ever heard of Sterling California?

It's a small mountainous community located above the upper Paradise Ridge with a population of around 400 esidents. Founded in 1901 or 1903 by Columbus Barber, who owned Diamond Match of Barberton, Ohio was on a mission to find a better selection of wood for his matches.

Go West thought Mr. Barber who traveled on looking for wood for his matches. The sawmill begin in 1904 with full operations about one year later in 1905.

The Manor Hotel that burned down in 1931.

Fred Clough named the city after a steam boiler used at the sawmill. Several business were owned and operated by Fred Clough including the Sterling City Mercantile Company and The Sterling City Bank. In 1911, the bank was robbed of $9000 dollars and escaped using a railroad handcar. Mount Saint Agnes Hospital was ran by the Catholic Sisters of Charity.

Sterling City streets are named after minerals & trees.

The seven mineral streets are Diamond, Quartz, Granite, Lava, Slate, Mica, and Gypsum. The 'tree' streets are Manzanita, Oak, Pine, and Spruce. By the mid 1950s when the delapitated sawmill could no longer meet Diamond Matches needs the operation ceased January 31 of 1958 and the town lost most of it's population.

The ole sawmill was purchased by Pollak Steel, who bought it for scrap but didn't recover much as the mill was destroyed by fire in April.

For people who would like to do more gardening but live in a short growing season area, a hobby greenhouse is the answer. A hobby greenhouse is not large enough to produce vegetables or flowers on a commercial basis. It will, however, give you a place for a tomato plant or two and some fresh greens even if you live in the northern regions. Greenhouse enthusiasts even have their own association, called the Hobby Greenhouse Association, which publishes a quarterly magazine. The organization also sponsers events and helps individuals connect to get help with the aspect of gardening that they are interested in, whether it's growing cacti or saving seeds.

If you are in the market for a hobby greenhouse, there are several types on the market. The smallest type is not large enough to walk into and must be accessed from the outside. It resembles an old-fashioned phone booth made all of glass and outfitted with shelves. This type is designed to fit as many plants as possible in as small a place as possible. The shelves are made of glass to allow as much light as possible to reach plants on the lower shelves. Another inexpensive version of this sort of hobby greenhouse is shelving covered with a zippered tent of clear plastic. This sort of arrangement is great for the small-scale hobby gardener wanting a place to keep her flowers or houseplant starts.T

here are a variety of designs of hobby greenhouse that are large enough to walk into but made entirely of clear glass or plastic. They are often about the same size as a small storage building. Some independent builders have started making these to sell locally. Among national brands, one of the nicest is called the "Solar Prism." It is called this because of it's unique construction. This hobby greenhouse is made of a single piece of durable clear plastic which is designed to work like tiny prisms side by side. They trap the rays of the sun and shoot them back into the greenhouse at all angles. For this reason, these little greenhouses are said to glow when the weather is cloudy.

Better hobby greenhouses are equipped with automatic sensors that open vents which allow ventilation and keep the interior temperatures from getting too high. These are a great labor saver, but can get expensive. Another benefit sometimes found in nicer greenhouses is a built in irrigation or misting system. Members of the Hobby Greenhouse Association, or HGA, have invented many interesting designs of greenhouses.

If gardening is your hobby, greenhouse growing will interest you. With a greenhouse, you can have the earliest tomatoes and salad greens all year. You can also start seedlings for the main garden early in the spring when outdoor temperatures would kill them. A hobby greenhouse can be a good investment.

When house hunting, many buyers make the mistake of waiting to contact a lender until after they have located their dream home. As a buyer, you will be in a much stronger position with a seller if you are pre-approved.

To effectively house hunt, you must know the amount you can borrow from a lender. There is nothing worse than find your dream home, but failing to qualify for the amount you need for a loan.

Avoid this by asking your lender to pull your credit information and to let you know what needs to be done to get a pre-approval letter. If you are going to have problems with getting a loan, it is better to know about it as early as possible.

Sometimes buyers resist contacting lenders because it’s not the enjoyable part of home buying and they’re afraid an extra credit check will reduce their credit score. This resistance is penny wise and pound foolish. Buyers who get their loan arrangements lined up at the beginning of the house buying process are really doing themselves a favor.

When you tell the seller you want to buy their property, give them a copy of your pre-approval letter. They will probably recognize the value of the letter, but don’t depend on this assumption. Make sure the seller realizes the loan is already approved. Taking this approach puts you in a very strong position. The seller knows you are not just wishing; you are capable of buying his property. One of a seller’s worst nightmares is signing a contract with someone, taking his property off the market, wasting time and then finding out that the would-be buyer cannot get a loan. On the other hand, you and your pre-approval letter are dreams come true.

Whether you are looking to buy a home for living in or whether are looking to just invest in real estate, you will need to get hold of real estate listings, first thing. Internet and newspapers are the most common ways of getting real estate listings.

With internet gaining popularity, internet real estate listings have become one of the easiest ways of checking out the real estate listings. Though the traditional method of looking for real estate listings (through newspapers) is still one of the most used methods, it is a very time consuming one. You have to read through various listings and sort out the ones that seem more suitable to you (and possibly write down the phone numbers and contact details on a piece of paper) and then call up the owners/brokers to fix an appointment for viewing the property (which may turn out to be totally disgusting in the end). Moreover, the newspaper listings generally happen on a weekly basis. So if a deal has materialised in the meanwhile, there is no way you can check it without actually calling up the owner/broker.

On the contrary, the internet real estate listings (on a good real estate listings website) are updated everyday or maybe twice a week.

Moreover, new real estate listings go up on the internet everyday (i.e. they don’t wait for the newspaper to get published).

So, if you have been using only the newspaper as your source of real estate listing information, you might end up getting stale information. You might lose out on a deal that was out on internet, say 2 days before. As such, making the first offer can make a big difference when it comes to real estate. Further, you don’t need to go through all the real estate listings in order to determine the listings that look suitable to you. You can specify various search criteria/ filters in order to get only those real estate listings that you really want to look into.

This is a big advantage when compared with newspapers where listings are generally classified just on the basis of location of the property. Thus you can save a lot of time here by browsing only through the real estate listings that are of interest to you. Moreover, there is no need to note phone numbers etc; you can just take printouts of the listings you want. Some websites also provide tools/ facilities to track those real estate listings. You could even contact the sellers by sending a message through the website (some websites provide such email type of facility). Another important benefit from real estate listings on internet is that some of them also contain images of the property. So you can have a look at the images and see if you like the property at all.

So, real estate listings on the internet do seem to offer a lot of convenience. However, internet or newspaper is really a matter of personal choice too.

Value can be established as the relationship between the item being valued and the person doing the evalating. Four factors determine value

Demand (refers to buyers)
Utility (means usefulness)
Scarcity (is supply)
Transferability (how easily can the item be transferred from one owner to another.

In real estate, value relates to many buyers (high demand), a useful property (with desired and needed amenities), scarcity of wanted properties and where title is clear and transfer is simple. These factors make real estate on eof the most valuable investments you can make.

TIP: An experienced REALTOR offers the greatest help in determining "value" amd fair market pricing. Agents can do a complimentary comparative market analysis or you can pay to have a formal appraisel done to help establish a current market value for your property.

Q. I'm a little anxious about selling our home. Can you offer any suggestions to make the selling process easier to deal with while our home is on the market?

A. Being a home seller is not always easy. You see, while your house is for sale and on display to the buying public, so is your whole life.

One of the most important services a REALTOR offers is helping home sellers hold their lives together during the entire marketing and home selling process.

Here are two of my best suggestions.

Hire a cleaning service, (This is most helpful when both sellers work.)
Allowi a lockbox on the property is a big advantage. (This gives agents driving the neighborhood with buyers and on the spot showing opportunity. Your home gets seen and not missed.)

TIP: If absolute privacy is a must, allow for showings only by pre arranged appointments coordinated by your agent and emphasized in the MLS data.

Finally NEVER allow strangers into your home wtihout an agent present.

The PG&E water flumes that zig-zag along the Paradise Ridge provide serene walking paths and trailheads for those willing to be adventurous. One of those pathways is the Miocene Canal. This trail is a healthy seven miles long and the most popular. Access the trail behind the Feather River Hospital located on Pentz Rd, which runs into the path where you'll be able to stroll over 18-inch wide cat walks. These cat walks run directly over troughs of flowing water where no foot path could be created.

PG&E has three major flumes in use in Butte County. The Hendricks Canel, from the Feather River's West Branch near Stirling City to the De Sabla powerhouse; the Miocene Canal, from the Feather River's West Branch near Coutolenc Road to the Lime Saddle powerhouse where the water is discharged into the Lower Miocene Canal along Highway 70 to the Coal Canyon powerhouse; and one from Butte Creek below Butte Meadows which goes along the upper Butte Canyon to the De Sabla powerhouse.

Please be aware these paths are not policed, and could be dangerous. PG&E owns a right-of-way along these flumes but many of them are on private property. Next to being great places to hike they are also rich in Butte county history.

This morning I awoke to a chilly wind and light rain sprinkles.
Nothing like the weather event plastered all over the news
media for Saturday Feburary 14, 2009. Over the past two hours it has begun to snow and accumulate covering sidewalks that were once cleared, now they pose
hazards to any one walking down them.

The tall ponderosa pines are laiden with white and swaying to the chilly breeze. Large snow flakes falling down are pretty to look at the first few times but after awhile even snow becomes a bother, If it prevents you from getting up and getting going doing your daily chores. Be safe in Magalia today!

As for me, I am staying indoors to a warm fire in the woodstove cuz having a picnic is out!

NEVER... NEVER Ignore The Problem The more behind in payments a homeowner becomes, the harder to reinstate the mortgage and more likely they will lose the home. Most lenders are willing to explore options, even if there are no guarantees.

Contact The Lender As Soon As There Is A Payment Problem   If a homeowner does not contact their lender, the lender will try to contact the homeowner by mail and phone soon after a payment has been missed.

Respond To All Mail From Your Lender   The first notice a homeowner will receive will offer good information and foreclosure prevention options which may help them overcome financial problems. Your failure to open your lenders mail will not be an excuse in a forecloure court action and you may miss the notice of pending legal action by not opening your mail.

Know Your Mortgage Rights   Find your loan documents and read them so that you are aware of the steps your lender may take if you can not make the payments.  Learn about foreclosure laws and timeframes in your state.

Review And Prioritize Spending Review your finances and see where spending can be cut in order to make the mortgage payment. Eliminate optional expenses like cable TV, entertainment, dining out and any memberships. Pay minimum credit card amounts.

The famous 54-lb. Willard, Dogtown, or Magalia nugget was found here in 1859. The gold was extremely coarse, and a number of other large nuggets besides the Willard were taken here. The placer-mining districts are one of the more productive in the State of California. This region was extensively mined during and after the gold rush

The Magalia or Mammoth channel is the longest and that flowed along the east side of the district. This district includes the placer deposits at Nimshaw, Forks of Butte, Mineral Slide and De Sabla and lode deposits at Toadtown.

To keep Bidwell Park healthy and attractive, the Park Division is always seeking individuals and groups interested in volunteering.

Listed below are just some of the volunteer opportunities in the Park:

Adopt-A-Picnic Site
Everyone has their favorite spot in the park to picnic. Volunteers are needed to help upkeep these sites. Some tasks include weeding the area, taking out non-native plants, painting signs, and small constructions projects. Once a site has been adopted, the Park staff can help create a volunteer plan to be followed.
Adopt-A-Trail Program
Community & business groups, classes & service organizations may adopt their favorite Upper Park trail to maintain and repair. Adoptions typically last a year with volunteer groups setting their own work hours. Park staff will meet with group leaders and devise a workplan to be followed based on their interests, skill level and input. Volunteers may check out Park tools for use during project hours and staff will provide professional guidance on trail maintenance techniques. For more information on adopting a trail, see the Adopt-A-Trail Handbook.
Litter Control
Individuals or groups are assigned or may choose a specific area of Bidwell Park to remove litter. In addition to these projects, the City co-sponsors several community-wide cleanups each year.
One Mile Oak Regeneration Project
The Oak Woodland trees of Bidwell Park are the most visible and vulnerable oak habitat in the Park. The regeneration and protection of baby oaks is vital to ensure that new generations of oak trees will inhabit Lower Bidwell Park. One Mile Recreation Area has designated oak regeneration sites that are neither irrigated nor landscaped. Volunteers help identify new oak seedlings then weed around them so they don’t compete with weeds and tall grasses for water and sunlight.
Painting
Winter weather as well as the summer sun damage the paint on everything from picnic tables to lifeguard chairs to Bidwell Park signs. Volunteers can help keep the Park looking attractive by repainting these items.
Park Watch
Park Watch is a volunteer group within the Park Division. Members patrol Bidwell Park on foot, bicycle, or, if they have one, by horse.
Members report suspicious or unusual activities or conditions to Park Rangers. Members also provide Park visitors with information on Bidwell Park and rules and regulations. To join Park Watch, click on Park Watch Application and return to the Park Division.

Requirements:
• Be at least 18 years old.

How to apply for membership in Park Watch:
• Pick up an application from the Park Office, located at 411 Main Street, 3rd Floor in downtown Chico or download the Park Watch Application.
• Or call the Volunteer Coordinator at 896-7831 to have an application mailed to you. When completed, applications should either be returned in person to the above address or mailed to: City of Chico Park Division, P.O. Box 3420, Chico, CA 95927-3420.
