Kankakee County storm alerts - 03/30/08 07:22 PM
If you go to http://www.sheriffalert.com/ and register, you can receive early tornado & misc. special emergency information from the sheriffs department on your cell phone. This is a free service & provides some early warning for the rural people who can not hear the sirens.
I pass this site out to all my clients who live in Kankakee County.  Herscher High school just sent information to parents stating they would begin using this system to alert parents to snow days.  I haven't seen that one come through but the storm alerts work quite well.

Geneology buffs - 03/30/08 07:17 PM
How many Realtors out there are also Geneology buffs?  In my spare time - well, when I can find some that is, I try to do Geneology research for my family.  It's time consuming so I don't get much done!
There is a site called Find a Grave.  It's interesting in that you can also look up famous people.  You can also sign up to be a photo volunteer, where you go to a grave at someone's request (usually someone out of state) and take a picture of their loved ones grave for them.  Sounds eerie to some but you get … (0 comments)

History isn't boring....Just sometimes weird - 03/30/08 05:51 PM

During the Victorian age, people would only change a baby's diaper every four days.  Whew whee!
The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be.
Here are some interesting facts about the 1500s:   Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June.  However, they were beginning to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when … (1 comments)

Did you know? Helpful hints - 03/30/08 01:24 PM

 DID YOU KNOW?
Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little "stringy things" off of it. That's how the primates do it. Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster. Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold! Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking. Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground … (9 comments)

A New Year......A New Path - the Love of a Friend - 03/28/08 10:01 AM
You may have seen a previous blog of mine about my friend Sieglinde "Linde" Boggess.  Linde was diagnosed last year with ALS.  She is a wonderful, loving, sweet individual who I hold in very high regard.  We had her retirement party this month and it was a very bittersweet occassion.
Linde decided to retire at the end of February 2008.  I am going to repost her letter that she published in the Home Finder this month - as there may be some of you that have ran across Linde in the past at IAR conventions.  She was always running into … (3 comments)

Peotone, Illinois - 03/10/08 09:59 AM
Peotone Illinois, is located approximately 40 miles from downtown Chicago. They are a small community that is proud of their history of friendly people, good schools, and home to one of the last remaining mills in the country, originally built in 1872.  The Village of Peotone was established in 1856 on the windswept prairie of Illinois and soon grew into a farming community.
As there wasn't a reliable source of water available for the production of power needed for grinding grain, Henry A. Rathje is given credit for building a windmill. Some historians account that it was his father, … (0 comments)

Momence, Illinois - 03/10/08 08:07 AM
Located 50 miles due south of Chicago on the historic Dixie Highway, the city of Momence is the oldest town in Northeastern Illinois, being established in 1834.  Early settlers called Momence the "Border Town" to describe it's position between 1800's civilization and the American frontier.
When fur trader Gurdon Saltenstall Hubbard first ventured into the region to establish a trading post, most of the area was still wilderness, prairie, woodland, and marsh.  The area was home to the Native American Pottawatomi, whose chief was Momenza, which inspired the name "Momence."  The trail Hubbard established between Chicago (Ford Dearborn) and Vincennes … (1 comments)
