Centered around the historic Capital City Country Club, northeast of downtown Atlanta in DeKalb county, Brookhaven, is a community which dates back to the early 20th century. Both the Capital City Country Club and the historic Brookfield neighborhood are on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the homes surrounding the country club were built prior to World War II and exemplify the finest quality artisanship and design of that period. Brookhaven comprises an area of about 8 square miles. There is Chamblee to the east, Dunwoody to the north, Sandy Springs to the west and Buckhead to south. With numerous prosposals in the last few years to incorporate Brookhaven into its own city the actual boundaries of what is or will be Brookhaven have been under revision. Still, since Brookhaven's eary beginnings back in the 1830's by the Godwin family, the area has been highly thought of as one of 'the' places to live. Brookhaven is another lovely community north of Atlanta proper and sitting just inside the I-285 perimeter. While once originally part of the North Atlanta region, it has since become known as a separate identity and has established its own distinctive character. Like nearby Dunwoody and Sandy Springs, Brookhaven is also considering establisihing itself as its own city.
