Earthquakes damage buildings in many different ways, some obvious and many not so obvious. As an example, cracks in walls and ceilings can seem outwardly to be minor, but there can be hidden damage that takes a trained eye and sometimes destructive testing to ascertain the full extent of the damage.
The 5.4 earthquake that struck Chino Hills almost exactly a month ago luckily caused only minor damage but it reminded us that we live in earthquake country. I heard on the news this morning that the victims of the earthquake has risen to 32,000. They say that the victims could actually be up to 80,000!
