WINTER
Winter is a beautiful and lively time in South Lake Tahoe. The views are nothing less than spectacular, with a tall white wall of mountain completely surrounding a crystal blue lake that never freezes-topped off with a sky that is just as blue, 75 days out of 100! It's a photography buff's paradise! When ski season arrives, usually around Thanksgiving, the town comes alive with that unmistakable winter resort energy.

Winter Recreation
For skiing and snowboarding, there is: Heavenly, with multiple base areas in California (where else can you ride a gondola from the casinos) and Nevada. From the top, Heavenly offers some of the best views anywhere, and nearly all types of skiing and riding options. There is also Sierra-at-Tahoe, a short drive up Echo Summit. More youth-oriented, SAT offers many terrain features and great tree skiing after storms. Also on the south side of the lake is Kirkwood, about 35 miles up to Carson Pass. There is very diverse terrain, much of it above the treeline. Kirkwood is famous for deep snow and powder days. You'll find equipment rentals and sales at these resorts and at many convenient locations all around the lake. For the cross country enthusiasts, try: Spooner Lake Cross Country; Kirkwood Cross Country; Hope Valley Cross Country; and (depending on snowfall at lake level) the trails at Camp Richardson Resort. Other South Lake Tahoe recreation options include tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating and snowmobile tours.

SUMMER
Summer is the most popular season in South Lake Tahoe-the variety of outdoor and indoor activities would be difficult to match anywhere in on Earth. The mild mountain climate along with the clean air and refreshing lake make the perfect getaway from the heat of the valley regions of California and Nevada. Visitors come from all over the world to take in the natural wonders by day, and play under the neon lights at night.

Summer Recreation
You name it, and you can probably do it here. And for every sport or activity around Lake Tahoe, you'll find local businesses that can get you to the right spot with the proper gear. Boats, watercraft, kayaks and more are perhaps the best way to experience the lake, and are for rent at a number of locations around South Lake Tahoe. There are even water ski schools. Cycling, mountain biking and hiking are all virtually limitless, and are rewarded with breathtaking scenery (in addition to an actual loss of breath). Climbers also have some favorite spots at the south end of the lake. Golf enthusiasts can play at several courses on the South shore, with many more just a short trip away. Sightseeing from the road is a popular, low-stress activity that usually brings visitors to EmeraldBay, if not completely around the lake! If you know where to look, there are a few lake-side grills where you can take in a nice lunch and at the same time, an incredible view. There are a variety of beautiful public beaches on the south shore, from Zephyr Cove all the way to Emerald Bay. |
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE YEAR-ROUND
Accommodations: The South Shore offers the most abundant and diverse lodging options of anywhere around the lake, from casinos to motels and hotels, themed to plain, luxurious to low-budget. There are also many homes available as vacation rentals.
Gaming: The South Shore casinos sit right against the state line (Nevada side of course). There are six major casinos along the short strip for nearly all genres of betting and gaming. Many of the Nevada side bars also feature slots video poker.
Nightlife and Entertainment: The nightlife in South Lake Tahoe is in a league of its own, at least by ski town standards. At the casinos and along the casino corridor, you'll find most of the shows and night clubs along with numerous bars and lounges. Many feature live music nightly. For the mellow or underage, there are 2 movie theatres at the Stateline area, numerous arcades and more.
Food and Drink: Very good dining and cocktails options of all kinds are literally everywhere in South Lake Tahoe. From Zephyr Cove, through the casino corridor and the Heavenly Village, all the way down Highway 50 to Meyers and up route 89 to Camp Richardson, you'll find the perfect restaurant for your party.
Shopping: There are many places to shop on the South Shore, too, between the casinos, resort villages, shopping centers and the small shops up and down Lake Tahoe Boulevard.
Transportation: It's always best if you're in Tahoe with your own vehicle, or a rental from one of the nearby major airports, as the things you'll want to see and do might be miles apart. Otherwise, to get around in South Lake Tahoe, either call a cab, or hop on the "Blue Go" public transportations system. Blue Go offers many stops around town, most within the city limits. There are also some very professional tour companies offering sightseeing tours or charters all around the Lake Tahoe area, as well as to San Francicso and the Wine Country.

WINTER
There really is no place like Truckee California. A place of great character and rich western history, it was formerly an old logging town, a source of ice prior to refrigeration, and an important and notorious part of the transcontinental railroad (did we forget to mention the Donner Party?). This was all before the tourism, sports and leisure industries discovered the many faces of Truckee, Donner Pass and the surrounding area.

Truckee is beautiful, historic and a fantastic gateway to the Sierra for nearly "anything winter." Skiers, snowboarders, backcountry enthusiasts and many others base themselves out of Truckee for their frosty life of adventure. Check in with the local sporting goods stores and specialty shops for ski rentals and the real scoop on what to do and where to do it.

We'll say it again. There's no place like Truckee. The town harbors an old west feel that can't be matched, and down the roads that cross here, you'll find incredible diversity-Reno and the desert, Lake Tahoe, Donner Pass to Nevada City, Grass Valley and Sacramento...the list goes on. Nearly anything that you seek in the summer is only a short drive away when you're standing in downtown Truckee.

TRUCKEE YEAR-ROUND
