Allen USA Celebration - Saturday June 30th at Celebration Park - Allen TX

The organizers of the event have announced The Bangles will Headline the entertainment for the day.

Known for hits such as "Walk Like an Egyptian," "Eternal Flame" and the Prince-penned "Manic Monday," guitarists Susana Hoffs and Vicki Peterson and drummer Debbi Peterson will perform just before Allen's massive fireworks show caps off the event.

Performances will take place on two stages throughout the celebration. Other activities include the Kid Zone, featuring several bounce houses and play structures, and the Kids Kraft Tent, which provides craft activities for children of all ages. The water spray ground also provides a way for kids to beat the summer heat.

The FREE event, which comes just ahead of Fourth of July, has grown significantly in recent years, drawing an estimated 85,680 attendees in 2011.

"From very humble beginnings as a small community gathering, it's remarkable that the Market Street Allen USA celebration has emerged as such a highly anticipated event," said Tim Dentler, Allen Parks and Recreation Department Director. "With the support of our great community partners and sponsors, each year we have raised the bar in terms of the caliber of family-friendly entertainment at the Market Street Allen USA celebration. We are beyond excited to ratchet the excitement up another level with such a legendary headline act as the Bangles."

Peace Officer Memorial Day and Police Week

I don't have a Peace Officer in my immediate family and I didn't know about this holiday before reading this blog by Tammy Lankford. Even so, I am sharing this in honor of those who serve and protect our communities tirelessly.

Please join me in prayer to lift up the families of those fallen, as well as those serving today and every day.

If you like me have a law enforcement officer in your family then you may know that on October 1, 1962 President John F. Kennedy signed into law Peace Officer Memorial Day which occurs annually on May 15th and that the week it falls on is Police Week. In 1994 President Bill Clinton amended the law and declared flags be flown at half staff that day all over the United States.

But tomorrow chances are your town flags will not be at half staff and everyone will be working and banks and schools will be open and no one will even notice. But for the families of the 166 officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in 2011, the 163 officers lost in the line of duty in 2010, the 138 lost in 2009 and so on... those families will know. Those families will likely not only remember the fallen, but honor those who stand guard over our safety ever day.

My husband belongs to an organization called CPO. One of the things they send to him annually is a calendar. That calendar hangs on the pantry door in my kitchen. I look at it every single day. Not a week goes by without multiple names of those fallen. Every morning when I look at that calendar I pray for the family of any name that appears that day. Tomorrow I will not only pray for all their families, but I will honor those that still stand watch over us. I challenge you to do the same.

Bake something and deliver to your local station

Make sure your local officials will fly their flags at half mast

I challenge each of you to find some small way to honor Peace Officers. And to take a moment to visit the following websites to see the names of those fallen. Do not let them be forgotten. Choose someone from your state and make a donation in their memory. More than 19,000 law enforcement lives have been lost in the line of duty in our country's history. Honor those who stand in our protection. Remember those who have fallen doing the same.

For those who serve and those who have fallen I give my heartfelt thanks. Thank you for daily putting your life on the line in order to protect others. I know you work hours that are too long for pay that is too short. I know you often think of the protection of others before you think of your own. I know your schedule often makes you miss events and the opportunity to be with your own family in crisis and times of emergencies. I know the vest you must wear is heavy and hot. I know you do not take deadly force lightly and when it comes to that it leaves a heavy burden for you to carry. Thank you for all you do. Thank you for choosing to serve to protect my family.

Sellers - How Do You Think the Housing Market is Doing in North Texas?

Here is an excerpt from an email I received from Hexter Fair Title today. It includes comments by Britt Fair, who compiles a Market Report each month for the North Texas area based on the sales volume listed in NTREIS, the MLS provider for our area.

From Britt Fair:

April was another strong month for North Texas housing, with dollar volume up 20% over last April. That year-over-year dollar volume change was caused by an increase of 11% in volume and an 8% increase in average price of homes sold. In fact, this April was the 3^rd highest dollar volume of NTREIS April home sales of all time (only 2006 and 2007 were better). To be fair, this stat should improve each year as North Texas population grows, but it’s good to be back on that track!

The other thing that a lot of folks are asking about is whether DFW home prices are really increasing. I do not believe that houses have appreciated 8% over April of last year – some of that increase appears to be related to the change in the mix of homes sold, as homes above $150k are performing better than homes below $150k. But then again, the price per square foot was up 6% in April (versus April 2011), so it does appear that there is finally some good, old-fashioned price appreciation to go along with the skewing effect of the change in the housing mix!

Happy Cinco de Mayo - Ole' Green Chili Chicken Dip

This is one of my favorite party foods. I don't remember where I found the original recipe, but I've been making (and modifying) it for years. So easy, yet delicious!

In fact, I am tripling this recipe to serve tonight at the Gallery Night in McKinney event.

Ingredients:

2 8-oz bars of cream cheese

1 can green chilis

1 can chicken (or 1 cup cooked, chopped)

2 cups shredded cheddar (I use Sharp) cheese

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375

Mix cream cheese, chilis, and 1 cup cheese for about 1 minute on low speed. It will be enough to combine ingredients thoroughly.

Stir in chicken with a fork to blend

Spread mixture in a 8 or 9" pie plate

Bake for 15 mins. Add remaining cup of cheese on top. Bake for 5-7 mins more to melt the cheese.

Serve with wheat crackers. Or, my new favorite is the jalepeno cornbread crisps (found at Wal-mart)

The mildly spicy richness of this dip will have your tastebuds shouting "Ole'!"

How do you know when you are in the Right Place at the Right Time doing Good Things for Great People? Because you can’t stop smiling when you leave!

That’s how I feel when I’ve finished volunteering for a riding session at Grace Lake Ministries in Anna, Texas. Under the Executive Direction of Holly Robinson, Grace Lake is a God-Centered Therapeutic Horsemanship Program focused on improving the quality of life of those it serves with Special Needs, Special Horses, and Special People.

One of the most rewarding moments was recently hearing a father brag of his daughter’s accomplishments after 22 years of therapeutic riding. Born with both physical and mental challenges, she now owns her own horse, participates in 125-mile Trail Rides, and can “pony” another horse while loping. His favorite part – hearing her speak confidently and articulately about her passion for horseback riding with friends and strangers alike.

You can now check out e-versions of library books and download them onto your Kindle, computer, or other compatible devices. Is that amazing or what??!

The Allen Public Library has a program called Overdrive which allows you to "check out" a limited amount of eBooks for a 14 day period. Click here for more information and to get started browsing the selections.

Dallas Christmas Parade - Where Llamas Get All Dressed Up!

This past weekend, the Sock Monkeys, my sister, daughter and I attended the annual Adolphus Childrens Christmas Parade in Downtown Dallas. It's an annual tradition that started for our family when my kids were young. Now, we take the grandkids and nephews.

Each year, there are a few different floats and groups. Yes, that's Elmo holding his goldfish!

But this year takes the cake!

There were Llamas marching in Christmas outfits!

How cute is THAT?! I bet Liz Wallace doesn't have llamas in her neighborhood!

Every 1st Saturday of December, you can create memories your family will never forget at the Dallas Christmas Parade. It begins at the corner of Austin and Commerce, and goes East on Commerce. Sometimes, the weather is better than others, but our kids continue to love it and talk about it through the years. It's an event worth attending!

Whoever knew 20 years ago this sleepy little farm town north of Dallas would have such energizing options for the family? Not only do we have world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment at the Allen Event Center. Now, we also have a wake-board park, skate park, inline hockey rink, and bmx track.

Way to Go, Lovejoy Lady Leopard Volleyball!

I'm so excited to have seen the awesome talent of the Lovejoy Lady Leopards Volleyball team last night! They won 3 straight sets to move on to the Regional Finals today. I just heard that their victory today was just as impressive.

Next step? They will return next weekend for their 4th straight Championship Finals. It's important to note that they have won 3 State Titles in the 3-A Division in a row. If they win next weekend, they will be setting a State Record by winning 4 in a row! Oh....and did I mention that they have won those Championships each year of their Varsity eligibility? That makes it even more impressive!

GO, LADY LEOPARDS, GO!!!!!!!!!!!

I Am Most Thankful for My Family

This has been an eventful year for my family, to say the least!

In May, we welcomed my nephew, Dylan to the clan!
Two weeks later my sister developed a near-fatal infection and was hospitalized for a week.
A month later my stepdad was hospitalized and underwent open-heart surgery. He just came home this week, after 4 months of hospitals, rehab, and close calls.
In July, my sister received a termination letter (coated in molasses, of course). She just last week received notice that her unemployment benefits have been granted after more grief than the law should allow!
In August, my sister had an operation to remove her gallbladder, the culprit in June....she is recovering very well!

Through it all, we are supporting my daughter in her efforts to earn her BA in Nursing degree by taking turns keeping the girls while she works on the weekends.

Big Guy has gotten serious about entering competitive tournaments in fishing.

Oh, and he proposed at the end of July, so we are planning a wedding for September 2012. Susan Emo found the perfect Wedding Dress and Liz Wallace has graciously offered to be a Flower Girl! I am working hard on the Wedding Dress Weigh Down and tracking the results in the Take It Off in the Rain Group here on Active Rain. I just love my AR family too :)

Did I mention that my sister is working with me in real estate too? I love that she can be home with her boys more often than not. It's what she's really always wanted.

Although I miss my son who moved to Heaven almost nine years ago, I have to say that I am truly blessed with an awesome family! I am loving watching my granddaughters grow and learn to be little people. It's also very interesting that the oldest one looks and acts a lot like her uncle. That brings joy to my heart quite often.

I'm so proud of my daughter and the terrific young woman she has turned out to be. She, like all of us, wears many hats...student, mother, nurse, daughter, and giver to those less fortunate.

We will have our family all together (RJ is there in spirit) on Thanksgiving, which is more than many families can hope for. For that, I am truly Thankful to my Heavenly Father!

What will be on your dining table on Thanksgiving Day? How happy would your Thanksgiving be with no food in your house?

This year our food for families is CRITICALLY LOW! We have only a limited number of days to collect donations and begin sorting and boxing food in time for Thanksgiving.

Every year we FILL two storage units with the food donations for this program. Usually by this date we are almost full, but one is completely empty and the other one only partially filled.

Hundreds of local families don't know where their next meal will come from, and aren't even thinking ahead 2 weeks until Thanksgiving. ACO volunteers plan to pack boxes of groceries for these families so that they too can have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. However, food donations for specific items are VERY low and we need your help over the next 10 days...

Please see our list of needs and help these families by adding a few extra items to your own shopping list that you can then donate to the ACO Food Pantry.

Help us put smiles on children's faces and food on their tables this holiday!

Please join me in meeting the needs in our community. It just may be someone in your family who needs us next....

I was just about to share an ad from the Village shopping center in Allen/Fairview promoting the arrival of Santa when I noticed that the entire ad omitted the mention of Christmas. You know....the holiday that puts the MOST MONEY in their pocket during the entire year!

They can say "holiday" all they want. It's free speech, right? However, Santa is ONLY associated with Christmas! If you want to profit from the Big Guy, get his story straight, retailers!

The older I get, the more it has begun to bother me that not only are retailers advertising gift giving earlier and earlier this year. (what happened to Thanksgiving?!!) But, they are also attempting to take a very important holiday (their biggest money maker, remember) away from me. I resent that!

And you know what? I am exercising MY right to Free Speech to say as much!

Bah Humbug, Village Shopping Center of Allen/Fairview!

This is the first year for my daughter to dress up in ages. I have lots of pics of costumes when she was younger, but none in recent years. She has been planning this Halloween get-up for months. The girls were excited to be her Thing 1 and Thing 2. How cute is this???!!
