north dakota: Housing Shortage...What's a city to do? - 07/02/12 03:11 PM
By now, everyone in the country knows about the energy boom taking place in North Dakota.  Consistently our state is ranked at the top for economic indicators - less than 3% unemployment, record sales tax collections, almost zero foreclosures, rapid construction boom, etc.  However, the biggest number that people are watching is the barrels oil per day output of crude oil.  The ND Petroleum Council reported that for the month of May, North Dakota had 609,371 BOPD, behind only Texas in the United States.  This number, which has increased to its current record level from its previous record of 510,000 BOPD … (2 comments)

north dakota: North Dakota's Booming! - 05/25/12 10:17 AM
I just got back to North Dakota yesterday after attending the International Council of Shopping Centers ReCon Real Estate Convention in Las Vegas.  It was an excellent convention where my associate Ben Hanson and I were able to meet with developers, retail and restaurant companies, as well as brokers from across the country to discuss opportunities in our state, and to see what is going on across the country.
This was my third trip to ICSC's ReCon and I was happy to see things picking up in Las Vegas.  Everyone knows that Vegas has been hit pretty hard by the recession, … (1 comments)

north dakota: North Dakota's economy continues to roll - 02/06/12 09:54 AM
About two weeks ago the 4th quarter sales tax numbers came out for the various communities in the State of North Dakota, and we saw record sales numbers across the board! With some communities experiencing 30%+ growth over last year, the economic activity is just incredible and the people are willing to use their money to play. One of the most shocking statistics, comes from a town called Williston. Many people have heard of Fargo (metro area population of 200,000+) but not as many have heard of Williston. Williston's 2010 census population only showed about 13,000 people in it, yet it's … (4 comments)

north dakota: What are your goals for the New Year? - 12/29/11 08:10 AM
2011 is waning away, and it will be missed.  A lot of great things happened in 2011, especially in this area.  In North Dakota, we experienced record growth, received reports that our population is at record levels, and have experienced economic prosperity that other states could barely imagine.  Nationally, we have avoided a deeper recession, we've seen markets start to bounce back, and we've seen Kim Kardashian start dating, get engaged, get married, get divorced and stay famous.  2011 saw tech failures with Blackberry and Sony both experiencing their networks fail, and we've seen successes such as Apple's iPhone 4s featuring … (1 comments)

north dakota: What does your business need to thrive? - 11/02/11 05:14 AM
As I was watching clips from the new Rock Center program with Brian Williams and listening to his takeaway from the growth in North Dakota, it started to sink in exactly how tough it is for businesses to compete and thrive in the nation right now.  The program featured a segment about Williston, North Dakota, and the massive growth taking place there - but what struck me was how amazed that the hosts and reporters were that businesses were doing so well in a climate in the country that seems unsteady and at a time when the rest of the country … (0 comments)
