One of the headlines I read in the news after President Obama had taken the oath was " The work begins".  Suddenly, I felt the need to look at my own productivity.  What had I done lately to support my business?

As I examined my motives, I began to feel as if I had been going about things the wrong way.  Although with good intentions, my focus had been shifted in the face of this economy. My number one focus should always be to help people solve their problems. Whatever the problem is, a house that needs to be sold, assistance getting loan approval, locating the right property. My commitment should be to their needs. In keeping the main thing the main thing, everything else will follow.

I was caught up in the fear of not having enough money and fell into fear based activities. Therefore, today I begin again. I am focused again, on what really matters, the service that I provide. People still appreciate service, especially if it is from the heart. Service can be what sets you apart and your clients will appreciate your efforts. True service keeps you focused on meeting their need instead of your need to make money. Remember your customers are feeling the same uncertainty of the times. Your consistency and commitment will reassure them during the transaction process.

We have been blessed with the opportunity to help people with one of the most important purchases of their lives. The process should be about them not about you. Building your business should be about building a reputation of integrity and exemplary service. If this is your focus you will automatically focus on activities that set you apart and make doing business with you special. Yes, I believe we must still track and run the numbers but do not be so concerned with the numbers that your reputation suffers.

I wish everyone a prosperous New Year and suggest you examine your 2009 business plans. Make sure your intentions are pure and your efforts will be rewarded.
