I am part of the group called Niagara Rises.  I am hopefully part of the positive changes here in Niagara Falls.  One of their missions is to bring new businesses to the Niagara Falls area.  Something that I believe passionately about (oh and I happen to chair their subcommittee on that topic).

Another hot topic in Western New York is the planned construction around the Peace Bridge and the possibility of eminent domain enacted on 83 Buffalo homes. In reading Don't Blame Diocese for Church Closing which is in the Buffalo News Everybody's Column on January 1st by Martin E. Bartnik a thought occurred.   It made me stop and think for a few moments.  I have wanted to write about this for some time, but my thoughts were mixed.

Those in Buffalo and Niagara Falls area are over joyed!   The Buffalo Niagara Regions Real Estate Market Ranked 13th Best Market in Nation
The National Association of Realtors (NAR) released 2007 4th quarter home prices. It places the Buffalo Niagara region in the 13th best market in the nation out of 151 regional markets in the report. The Buffalo Niagara region saw a 9.1% increase in single-family home prices from the 4th quarter of 2006. Home sales prices increase rose from $96,000 to $105,400 in the twelve-month period.

Buffalo's Alternative to Home Demolition - 02/11/08 05:19 PM

There are many abandoned buildings in the Buffalo Niagara region of Western New York.  In Buffalo alone there is an estimated 5,000-10,000 abandoned homes. These abandoned Buffalo homes are a problem, especially when they are neglected.   Stories like Dirty Deeds that was published in January in BusinessWeek focus on a lot of the negatives. 
But it isn't as bad as the media would like to report.  There is a strong movement here in WNY to fix the situation with the city of Buffalo's Mayor's AntiFlipping Task Force and grass roots organizations leading the way.

There is a tradition I remember fondly as a child and it was getting chowder from the Fire Department. Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department Chowder sale is just one of many, but many say it is the best around. Returning to Western New York after 20 years of being gone there are some things that stand the test of time - Chicken Wings, Beef on Weck, Fish Fry on Friday, DiCamillo's Bakery and Chowder!
