Kannapolis Police Officer Named North Carolina D.A.R.E Office of the Year - 01/23/09 02:09 PM
The North Carolina Dare Association recognized Kannapolis Police Officer Terry W. Triplett as the 2009 North Carolina D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year. At a training conference in Atlantic Beach on January 15, Officer Triplet was also sworn into his second term as First Vice President for the North Carolina D.A.R.E executive board of directors. Officer Triplet has taught and graduated over 3,000 fifth graders as an instructor for D.A.R.E. in the Kannapolis City Schools. Officer Triplett joined the Kannapolis Police Department in 2002 after his retirement from the United States Air Force.

Kannapolis Fire Station 5 Opens - 01/23/09 02:05 PM
Kannapolis Fire Station 5, located on Barr Road, opened recently. The 12,300 square-foot station will provide increased public safety coverage for the rapidly growing western part of Kannapolis allowing for decreased response times. Key areas served by the new station include Afton Ridge, Pine Creek, Renaissance Square and River Pointe. An official grand opening will be scheduled for mid-February.

Concord Police Chief Named President of NC Association of Chiefs of Police - 01/23/09 01:57 PM
Concord Chief of Police Merl Hamilton has been named president of the N.C. Association of Chiefs of Police. The association is made up of more than 200 police chiefs from across the state. Hamilton was elected to this office at the association's annual conference on January 13 in Durham. Hamilton has been Concord's police chief since June of 2001. Before that, he worked at the Hickory Police Department for nearly 20 years.

The last few weeks have brought many changes to the stores at Concord Mills. While several stores have either closed or are winding down their last days, the mall is still recruiting new stores to maintain the total entertainment experience Concord Mills is known for. Recent and upcoming closures include Circuit City, KB Toys, Liz Claiborne Shoe Outlet , Kirkland's and Blacklion. Beginning, February 2, the City of Concord will begin it's free annual Public Safety Academy. Open only to residents, the 10 week academy will introduce the community to the various public safety services available. You will become familiar with how the different departments manage emergencies, and see the technology of the communications center. Then you will move onto the police department to learn about everything from Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team to being a part of a rescue from a tall building. More than 500 members were in attendance. 2008 Small Business of the Year was awarded to Southgate Masonry & Lumber Company Citizen of the Year was awarded to Dr. L. Allen Dobson for his accomplishments in the medical field including the growth of his practice, Cabarrus Family Medicine Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Gina Goff, Jim Monroe and Robin Hayes. Employees at Duke University's Research Campus location are preparing to launch the effort to enroll 50,000 Kannapolis and Cabarrus County residents in the MURDOCK study. The registry will provide researchers with a pool of 50,000 volunteers to choose from when conducting various health studies. Specific disease studies could include clinical trials, which test new drugs or other interventions, or cohort studies, which follow people at risk for disease for many years.
