As fresh, local produce starts growing, the Piedmont Farmer's Market will begin opening at various locations throughout Cabarrus County. There will be a variety of produce, eggs, meat, crafts and baked goods.

Many local high school drama departments are busy preparing spring performances of some classics and new shows you may not be familiar with. These performance are a great way to enjoy a night of entertainment without having to travel far or spend a lot and you can support the local schools at the same time.

Philip Morris Closing Concord Plant One Year Earlier Than Expected - 04/24/09 03:36 PM
Philip Morris officials announced this week the Concord plant would clase one year earlier than originally planned. Around 1,100 workers still remain at the Concord plant and most will be laid off at the end of July. In July 2007, Philip Morris initially announced they would be closing the Concord plan in 2010. Approximately 2,500 employees worked there at the time. Many have been transferred to the Richmond facility. Philip Morris attributes the earlier plant closing to a decline in cigarette sales brought on by the economy as well as the federal excise tax increase.

A new apartment community for those 55 and older recenently opened in Kannapolis at 300 S. Little Texas Road.
The 64-unit Villas at Forest Park is for low income senior adults.
The community is a public-private partnership involving Douglas Development LLC, Halcon Development LLC, Hart Development LLC, the local nonprofit Prosperity Unlimited Inc., the city of Kannapolis and the N.C. Housing Finance Agency.
One-bedroom units rent for $252, $417 and $442, and two-bedroom units for $289, $512 and $607, based on income.

Coca-Cola 600 Will Have Hybrid Pace Car - 04/24/09 03:09 PM
A hybrid vehicle will be the official pace car for the first time in NASCAR during next month's Coca-Cola 600.
The Camry lent by Toyota had to pass a NASCAR performance test. The hybrid must reach speeds close to 100 mph by the time it reaches the second turn of Lowe's Motor Speedway from a standby position near the exit of pit road.
The Camry was built at Toyota's facility in Georgetown, Ky. NASCAR star Denny Hamlin was to introduce the car during a test drive Tuesday at Lowe's.

On Monday, the Rowan County Transit System began the Rowan Express route from Kannapolis to Salisbury.
The Rowan Express service picks travelers up at the North Carolina Research Campus and takes them to downtown Salisbury with stops in China Grove and Landis in between. 
The Rowan Express will connect communities with bus service while linking employment centers, shopping, county services and medical facilities. The service runs hourly between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

A product research and testing firm near the N.C. Research Campus will pay people to wash their hair, shave and even eat. Spectrum Discovery Center is located in the old K&W Cafeteria on Oak Avenue in Kannapolis pays consumers to use products and then give their opinions of the products.

Concord Resort to Host Duathlon - 04/08/09 12:09 PM
Concord's Embassy Suites will host the 2009 International Triathlon Union's Duathlon World Championships.
As the official host site, the Embassy Suites also will serve as the location of the regional expo and awards ceremony.
The duathlon is scheduled to be held in Concord Sept. 24 - 26. It comprises a 10-kilometer run, a 40-kilometer bike ride and finishes with a 5-kilometer run.
At least 850 participants from more than 30 countries are expected to attend, according to the Cabarrus County Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Friday morning was a sight to see at The Embassy Suites in Concord.  Over 600 people from our community came together to support the arts in Cabarrus County.  It was a great morning filled with fellowship, entertainment, food and an opportunity to make a difference in our quality of life.

Monday morning over 100 community leaders came together to meet with our legislators and voice our concerns, hear what they had to say and ask questions.  This is always a most informative breakfast and one that provides an opportunity to meet up close and personal with our legislators. 
Topics including education, transportation and health care were at the forefront in addition to budget issues and concerns.
