vacation: Greetings from the top of the world...almost! - 06/24/16 08:20 AM
Did you ever have one of those days when you know nothing will ever be more spectacular?

Today was that day. We took the cog train up to Mount Washington. If you're not aware, Mount Washington, in New Hampshire, is the highest point east of the Mississippi, and, other than a freak tornado a few years ago, the location of the highest wind speeds ever recorded on earth - 231 miles per hour on April 12, 1934.
Wayne is a meticulous vacation planner. He picked today for our trip to Mount Washington because the weather was the clearest, and he knew I would … (6 comments)

vacation: Moose Crossing - 06/23/16 09:56 PM
Greetings from our vacation in New Hampshire!
Being from the suburbs of New Jersey, we were pretty excited (and surprised) the first time we saw a sign like this.

We spoke to a few (many) locals and learned that, to them, moose are relatively common - perhaps not as common as deer are to us Jesey folk, but common enough that every local had had some kind of interaction.
So we booked a Moose Safari. A local gentleman outfitted a bus with external floodlights and takes groups of tourists up to the more remote areas of the State and finds moose.
So at 8:00 last … (8 comments)

vacation: The Pine Barrens - a short drive away! - 04/27/15 07:09 AM
How about a quick weekend getaway?
The New Jersey Pinelands , also known as the Pine Barrens,  extends through seven counties of southern New Jersey and encompasses three state forests.. In 1978, 1.1 million acres of the Pine Barrens was designated as the Nation’s first National Reserve. In the 1980s, the United Nations named the Pine Barrens an International Biosphere Reserve which means that it demonstrates sustainable use with conservation.  Development in the Pinelands is controlled by the New Jersey Pinelands Commission.
The soil is sandy and acidic which made it unsuitable for European settlers to cultivate their crops. Locals call the soil … (9 comments)

vacation: Cape May, NJ - A mini-vacation - 02/19/15 04:24 AM
This past Sunday Team Zuhl made the 140 mile trek to take a mini-vacation in Cape May, NJ.  We are both lifelong residents of NJ and neither of us had ever been to Cape May.  We did a little reasearch and found some fun things to do, even though temperatures were bitterly cold and the winds were blowing fiercely we knew we'd find lots to see and do.
Our GPS took us to a place about 12 miles away from where the bed and breakfast we'd be staying in actually was.  Fortunately as we made our way towards Cape May Courthouse, we stopped … (10 comments)

vacation: Day off for Labor Day - 09/01/12 09:53 AM

Sure, we showed some houses in the morning.
And, sure, we did some AR blogging in the evening. But yesterday was, essentially, a day off. Several hours away from the computer, sitting lakeside reading novels.
Union County residents - Lake Hopatcong is less than an hour's drive and is a beautiful, affordable place to spend a mini-vacation!

vacation: The Meteorite Men and Our Office in the Woods - 08/19/12 06:43 AM
We left for our annual camping trip on Monday of last week.
Because we were camping, and because one leaky tent several years ago taught us the irreversibility of wet clothes, Jean packed with a little more care than usual.

After a 5 hour car trip, we arrived to an incredibly beautiful day. We caught up with some dear friends and pitched our tents.

Of course, Jean missed Active Rain so much that she scouted out the 3 or 4 square feet where she could find signal and set up a temporary office. But eventually … (4 comments)

vacation: Weekend Away from Work? Hardly... - 07/22/12 10:22 AM

Team Zuhl took a well deserved 'vacation' to Vermont this weekend.
Is one ever really away from one's business when one is self employed? I think not.
Here's a photo of Wayne about to dig into his lobster. Ten seconds later, he was on the phone (Iobster in one hand, phone in the other) negotiating a contract.
Business in NJ is booming, folks, and, even on a Saturday evening and even on 'vacation,' we'll be on the job for you :)

vacation: 10 Ways to Burglar Proof Your Home - 06/09/12 04:50 AM
If you're taking a vacation this year, there's no reason to leave your home unprotected. Here are 10 ways to be sure that burglars don't choose your home:
Be sure the doors and windows are locked. Install outdoor lighting that makes entrances to your home visible from the street without causing glare. Put random lights, televisions, and radios on timers so that anyone watching your home will think you're still there. Prune bushes away from your home so that there aren't any places for a burglar to hide. Contact your post office and newspaper delivery service and stop delivery while you're … (3 comments)
