The commentary from one of today’s Linkedin’s Thought Leaders got me thinking of a story my Dad told me when I was first getting into the business world.  I think it really gets to the heart of commission compensation.
Here it goes:
A boss enters his (commission) salesman’s office and says “come with me, we’re going to buy a new car”.  The salesman, eager to spend time with his boss, jumps at the chance.

Back in the day, we picked up the phone and farmed for new business.  New and existing customers were "pitched" on the phone - sales were closed during a conversation.Getting to the decision makers - we'll that was a process; befriend the assistant or secretary, get lucky and maybe get through - we needed thick skin, and a whole bunch of perseverance.Now, Linkedin is hands down the best platform to connect on a B2B level.  In our small Company we've been able to reach the right people at a fast-pace.  Not only have we been able to "connect" but our connections … (4 comments)

We went to a Linkedin seminar yesterday and one of the speakers talked about data, data, data - and the fact that these big social platforms are collecting it like crazy.  They know where we went to school, the books we like, where we work, what we do - all kinds of things they can use to target us with information.Our Company was there to learn more about the great business and sales platform that is Linkedin. Today, Chris Smith over at Inman wrote about having businesses take down their Facebook pages immediately.  As it turns out we had "suspended" our account a few weeks ago.While our business model and goals are purely Internet based, we just couldn't figure out how to develop a strategy that justified marketing via Facebook.We have however, seen the value and benefits in Linkedin, Twitter and Activerain.  Each has had its own specific benefit and value for our Company.  Linkedin we discovered, has given us the opportunity to connect with real business opportunities.
