Heart of Texas Morgan Horse Club - 01/08/11 10:41 PM
I spent a wonderful day today at the Winter Meeting of the Heart of Texas Morgan Horse Club, at the lovely farm house of a friend and club member in Coupland, Texas. We had a great time, talking and getting caught up (members are spread all over Central and South Central and Southeast Texas), and making plans for the club for the coming months, especially the annual HOTMHC Open Fun Show being held in Seguin April 16. It was 15 years ago this coming June 1 that HOTMHC was formed in my living room in Austin (before we bought the ranch (1 comments)
It's Rodeo Season in Texas! - 01/07/11 11:31 PM
With the turning of the year comes the beginning of rodeo season in Texas. Every year, in cities big and towns small, rodeos start happening as surely as wildflowers bloom in the spring. If you play your cards right, you can attend rodeos nonstop to get you right through the winter (such as it is in Texas).
First up is the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, January 14-February 5, 2011.
San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, February 3-20, 2011.

Dancing While You Work - 01/06/11 09:14 PM
In our profession, we can spend a lot of time at the computer. Sitting in that chair for long stretches at a time, we can get stiff and sore and, if we're not careful, cranky. I've found a remedy for this. Well, actually, my husband found it, and sent me the link. It's called Loudcaster, and it's radio for the internet. Lots of channels, you can browse channels and genres to find something to suit your mood and get you moving. This evening, even though it's not raining out there in the dark and should be, for this music, I'm listening (5 comments)
The A B C's of School Districts in Central Texas - 01/05/11 11:06 PM
A very common question when a client is relocating to this area and deciding where to purchase a home is, "What is the best school district?" That's a question that, of course, parents have to answer for themselves. As I've noticed, and always say, what's a good or great school depends on the child. Why? Because each child is different, with different strengths and weaknesses and educational needs, and the best school for them is the school that fits that particular child. Even in my own family, the school that was great for our son would have been a disaster for (0 comments)
My Roommate Is a Horse! - 01/04/11 10:22 PM
It all starts with a pony ride. Or a trail ride on vacation. Or a one-time riding lesson. Next thing you know, you've got a horse, and you're boarding it. All of us who have horses in our lives know the next step. You start thinking about the drive out to the stables. You start imagining waking up in the morning and sitting at the breakfast table having coffee and looking out the window at your horse. It's the beginning of the end. Then come the questions. How can I make this work? Who will I have to go riding with? (1 comments)
Texas Homestead Exemption - 01/03/11 10:00 AM
In Texas, homeowners are entitled to a homestead exemption on the house they live in as their primary residence. If you've just moved to a new home, and live in it on January 1, you will need to file for your homestead exemption. Do not let someone tell you that you need to pay (them or anyone) to file for this exemption - it's a simple form, it's free, and you can do it yourself in no time at all. The forms and information on where and when to file can be found on the various Appraisal District websites. In Central (1 comments)
Jarrell, Texas, Is Growing - 01/02/11 12:00 PM
When we first moved to Jarrell, Texas, 15 years ago, it was a classic small town Texas rural village. And we liked it that way - that's why we moved there. While the school had new buildings, it still had (and still does) the original building built in 1916. There was a one street downtown that held the Jarrell Supermarket, Eagle Bank, Ginger's Beauty Salon, the post office, Jarrell-Schwertner Water Supply, a gas station, the Speedway Inn, the liquor store, the volunteer fire department. Across the highway was Doc's, which survived two tornadoes (including the Big One, the F5 that hit (3 comments)
Taking It A Day At a Time - 01/01/11 11:06 PM
A think a lot of us are very glad to see 2011 get here (or glad to see 2010 gone)! It was an . . . interesting . . . year last year for most of us. (As the old curse goes, "May you live in interesting times.") But here today we have a bright, shiny, spanking clean new year, full of hope and, in the case of where I am, sunshine (some of you I realize are not so lucky). I've been thinking about how I want to get through the year ahead and what's the best way to do (5 comments)
