Whatcom County home prices are rising at a faster rate than the national average according to a federal study.
The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight reported that home prices in Whatcom County during the second quarter increased 5.1 percent compared to last year. The national average appreciation for the same period was 3.2 percent, while the Washington state average was 9.1 percent.
According to the OFHEO, the nation's average 3.2 percent annual change was the lowest since 1996-97.

 A state appeals court ruled on Monday that Whatcom County will have to re-examine the number of houses or businesses it will allows in certain  parts of the county, including the Guide Meridian and Chuckanut Drive and near Toad Lake,
Whatcom County allows higher-than-usual levels of rural development in some areas. This zoning  is being challenged by Futurewise, a state anti-sprawl group.
There are 13,555 acres throughout the county that could be affected. In some areas, as many as three housing units per acre are allowed.

Negotiations will have to take place between city and county, as Whatcom County leaders rejected Bellingham's plan on where and how big the city can grow.     Bellingham wants 2,128 acres to be put in urban growth areas, an area where denser growth should occur. The city says there isn't enough room inside city limits and the current urban growth area to accommodate expected growth.
The County Council did voted to include only 250 acres near King and Queen mountains in Bellingham's urban growth area, allowing those to develop at higher densities.

whatcom county real estate information: First Half of the Year Sales Statistics for Blaine/ Birch Bay Condos - 07/11/07 10:06 AM

Blaine/Birch Bay Real EstateCondos hasve had a good increase in sales price for the 1st half of the year. These stats are not counting the Semiahoo boat slips which are sold as condos.
They had a phenomenal 12.7% increase in average sales price and  if you look at median price a decline of 1.5%.
2 fewer condos sold this year compared to last and they have been selling a bit faster than last year.

Blaine/Birch Bay Real Estate has had a good increase in sales price for the 1st half of the year.
They had a 2.7% increase in average sales price and about the same as 2006 if you look at median price.
34 fewer homes sold this year compared to last and they have been sitting on the market little bit longer than last year.
