Tuesday's Thoughts and Musings....... - 05/31/11 12:42 PM
Well it is the 31st day of May, and the 31 Days of May challenge is nearly over. I didn't achieve the sheer number of posts that some write in any given month. I usually write 40 or more posts in any given month, the challenge this time was that instead of writing several posts at one time, save them in draft and post them throughout the week, I wrote a post everyday. Yesterday Darcy and I spent the entire day shooting photographs for a client of the area around St. George. That was an all day challenge, we started near

Something to do today if you're in Cedar City..... - 05/30/11 11:56 AM
Today at the Main Street Park there will be a fund raiser for a little girl battling Cancer. The proceeds from this event will help her family offset some of the costs of her treatment. This is a great cause, we need to get ahead of this horrible disease. It is a disease that will touch everyone's life at some point. It is especially cruel when it strikes someone in their childhood! This young girl, Avery Evans, and her family would appreciate any support that we can give them! The event begins at 10 AM and will go until 4 PM.

Cub Scouts?????? - 05/29/11 07:23 PM
Our local Church groupl just asked Darcy and I to be in charge of the Cub Scout Troop that they sponsor. This is a challenge for us, we don't have any children, and it has been a long time since I have had much to do with scouting. Like anything in life that is new, it is an opportunity to learn some new things and become better at something! We are excited to see how it goes! If nothing else it will keep us young interacting with those youngsters! Scenic Southern Utah

Memorial Day Observances.... - 05/29/11 12:32 PM
Cedar City and Parowan each will be hosting Memorial Day Observances tomorrow. Cedar City's observance will take place and the Veterans Memorial in the Cedar City Cemetery at 9 AM. Parowan will host their Memorial Day Observance at 10 AM at the Parowan Cemetery. My favorite thing about Memorial Day is seeing all the American Flags that are placed on the graves of those veterans in the cemeteries around the country! The plaque on the World War I memorial in the Veteran's Memorial Park in Cedar City. Clarence Benson is my Grandfather.

Memorial Day Weekend......... - 05/28/11 12:29 PM
As everyone heads off to their Memorial Day activities, I wanted to remind myself as much as anyone else the reason for the Holiday. Memorial Day was set aside as a National Holiday to honor those who gave their all for us to be able to have the Freedoms that we do enjoy. It is also a great opportunity to say thank you to those who came home as well as honoring those who died. I have to say that Billy Ray Cirus had it right: "All gave some, some gave all. Some came through for the Red White and Blue

Cedar City Localism Post...Graduations and Other Events Today..... - 05/27/11 12:04 PM
Today is one of the biggest days in the life of a young person here in Iron County. We have three High Schools in the County and all three have their graduation ceremonies today. For me it is ironic, May 27th is also the day that I graduated from High School and is a day that I still remember the details like it was yesterday. It wasn't, it was many years ago (I am not going to say how many, the younger readers will tune me out if they knew how old I am!). Anyway today is more about the graduating

Cedar City Localism Post...Congratulations to our High School Athletes!!!!! - 05/26/11 12:44 PM
The High School Spring Sport Season has been completed and our local High Schools did VERY well in the competitions! They should all be commended for their excellence! I am beginning the run down of how they did with the Utah AAA State Track Champions Lady Reds from Cedar High School! What a great achievement after 3 consecutive second place finishes! Other sport results for Cedar High School, Boys Track AAA 5th place, Softball was also a top 5 team, the Baseball team qualified for the State tournament as well. For Canyon View High School it was a tremendous year! They

Wednesday's Words and Photos..... - 05/25/11 01:09 PM
I am going to try to stop worrying about our weather here in Cedar City, instead my thoughts, prayers and everything else that I can give has turned to our friends in the South and Midwest that have been so devastatingly affected by the sheer ferocity of weather patterns. I will admit that I looked at photos in horror of what these residents have been put through. The destruction brings tears to my eyes and takes my breath away! As I said, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone of you! Now rather than dwell on the aftermath of the tornados,

Tuesday's Thoughts and Musings...... - 05/24/11 01:44 PM
I have been pondering what I could write in a post today. While I was pondering, I went over what I had done last night. Darcy and I have a small entertainment budget, that and we are children of the 1970's so we watch a lot of TV. One of the shows that we have gotten into the past couple of months is the Chicago Code, starring Jennifer Beals. We were saddened to see it dropped from Fox's line up. It seems that it didn't catch on with the right demographic of viewers. Apparently, it wasn't the only show that was

Cedar City Localism Post...More from the Business Expo.... - 05/23/11 04:29 PM
One of the fun things about the Cedar City Business Expo that we took part in was talking to other business owners here in Cedar City. One of the businesses, Healthy Simple Life Nutrition, hosts an 8 week weight loss challenge which includes free nutrition classes and personal coaching. I spent a few minutes talking to them, they had a photo board of local residents who have had dramatic weight losses over time. It was quite informative and really eye opening to see the success that their clients or students were having. They have a web site: http://ironcountyweightlosschallenge.com This is the

Sunday's Musings..... - 05/22/11 09:18 PM
Sunday has almost passed, I love this time of year Especially when it isn't snowing! It has yet to really got hot here. Just some observations from the week that is now passed. We spent many hours the past couple of days at the Business Expo. We got to meet with some wonderful people. It was interesting to watch people walk past, the ones that didn't want any contact with Realtors. They walked past ignoring us, even though we had a couple of nice drawings. It was like they were afraid that we were going to pull them in and make

Scenic Saturday...Sunsine on a Cloudy Day!!!! - 05/21/11 11:33 PM
Today was a really great Spring day. Darcy and I showed a couple of homes to perspective buyers this morning, then we spent the rest of the afternoon at the Cedar City Business Expo. It was a great place to network and meet new people, but it was indoors. We missed the first really nice day in several days, that is alright, we had fun! This evening we even fired up the barbecue and grilled some boneless pork ribs, corn on the cob and pineapple. It was delicious! Here are some photos of the evening clouds: The Setting Sun from

Thankful Thursday...Smile... - 05/19/11 03:21 PM
I am sure that everyone has had one of those moments when someone will say something, or something happens, and the words of a song begin playing in your head. It is almost as if your brain has become a jukebox, doing it's part to get you through the moment, make you smile, or what ever it is that you seem to need at the moment. I had that experience as I was sitting here trying to decide whether to spend a few moments formulating this blog, or doing one of the other tasks that I have been working on. One

Tuesday's Thought....Memory..... - 05/17/11 06:31 AM
I was glancing at the box scores from last night's Major League Baseball games this morning, I saw where a relief pitcher for the Royals gave up 14 runs against the Indians in a game. I thought of something that I heard Tim McCarver say about what it took to be a great relief pitcher in the Major Leagues, he said good stuff, and a really short memory. You have to forget your failures and work on today's game. There is nothing more useless today, than what you did yesterday. In baseball that may be true. In life, I think that

Cedar City Localism Post...Sonny Boy's Barbecue..... - 05/16/11 02:48 PM
We have put off going in and eating at Sonny Boy's Barbecue in downtown Cedar City. Not because we weren't intrigued, nor because we don't like good barbecue, nothing could be further from the truth, we were definately both. Sonny Boy's has a mobile smoker that when it isn't at a remote location is in front of the restaurant, feeling the air with that sweet wood smoke aroma. There is nothing to compare it to! We have put it off, because of fear. Fear that we were going to be disappointed, it has happened before, and it isn't a good thing

Sunday's Thought.... - 05/15/11 07:34 PM
I think that Sunday's are great day to step back and evaluate things. Today has been no different, it has been relly windy today, no storm, just wind. It is one of those days that really isn't fun to be outside because of the wind. Anyway I came across a quote by John Adams the 2nd President of the United States. "Old Minds are like old horses; you must exercise them if you wish to keep them in working order." I like the quote, but I would eliminate the word old, I believe that the mind works a lot like a

Scenic Saturday - 05/14/11 07:33 PM
Saturday's are a great day to finish up the work's week and tie up loose ends. We had a second showing with some great referral clients. It is always fun to show good clients houses! As we talked I thought about what Southern Utah has to offer the residents who live here. I came up with a few photos to share, some of these are views that I don't often use in my blogs. The first choice is a view of Cedar City from Leigh Hill on the Southwest side of Cedar City. The second photo is actually

Want to Visit Cedar Breaks.... - 05/11/11 05:52 PM
I was just reading an article on the snowpack in the the State of Utah. The Utah Department of Transportation(UDOT) had an article that appeard on ksl.com saying that there is still as much as 15 to 20 feet of snow across the roads in the high country. State Road 148 is the access road to Cedar Breaks, they UDOT, is saying that it will be mid June before they will attempt to plow this road. Part of this decision is budgetary, but the reality is, even if UDOT exhausts it's budget to plow these roads, you will basically be in

Today's Thought... - 05/11/11 12:43 AM
I have had a hectic day, I know that isn't really all that unusual for most of us. While undwinding this evening, I came across this quote in an email. It really hits home to me. It seems like in Real Estate, there is always some one bugging us to buy this program or that program to do our work for us. I know that we, get them almost weekly! They can be really annoying when they call! This quote comes from the Opera Singer Beverly Sills: "There are no shortcuts to any place worth going." This is so very

Technical Question...Facebook Questions... - 05/10/11 11:38 PM
Darcy and I were finishing up with the second Tech Tuesday at our office and one of the other Realtors in the office had a question. We set up Facebook Fan pages last week, and this agent had linked the fan page to their personal page. Today when she tried to post listings onto her fan page and have them show upon her Personal Page wall, nothing happened. It was showing up on her fan page on the wall but wasn't showing up on her Personal page anywhere. The kicker of this is that an hour earlier she had entered two

Motivational Thought...Opportunities.... - 05/09/11 04:52 PM
I have debated with myself all day whether or not to write a motivational thought blog. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with writing these type of blogs. It may be wrong to debate yourself, but that could be another blog idea. I usually spend a few minutes each morning reading the news stories on the internet. I usually browse two or three different sources for news, so I don't get too much of slant on the news. The first thing that jumped out at me was that someone in the Real Estate industry must have done something

Monday's Thoughts....Buyers.... - 05/09/11 11:54 AM
I am glad that Active Rain seems to be fixed again. I was going through some withdrawl shakes last night! I hope that everyone enjoyed their Mother's Day! This morning as I looked at the snow covered grass,(yes it snowed again last night), I thought about the buyer clients that we have, and what we have been doing to get them into a house. I thought about each of their chief criteria to get into a house, I was suprised to see that the over-riding criteria is still price. It is true that everyone wants the nicest house they can afford

Happy Mother's Day Wishes... - 05/08/11 12:13 AM
I grew up a Country Music Fan. I think that the first Long Playing record I owned as a youngster, was Glen Campbell's Wichita Lineman. The one thing about Country Music is that they do have great songs about Mother's. Mothers are a great source of inspiration for all of us. I wanted to include the chorus of a Glen Campbell Song as a tribute not just to my Mother, but to all the Mothers out there! Happy Mother's Day! "There ought to be a hall of fame for mamas Creation's most unique and precious pearls And heaven help us always

Saturday with Some Words...The Kentucky Derby... - 05/07/11 10:05 AM
Todays is Derby Day. This was one of my parent's favorite days of the Spring. They loved to watch the Kentucky Derby. Things were planned around the race. They didn't care for the pre race build up, nor all the post race coverage, they loved to watch the race. I remember watching the Kentucky Derby on a black and white TV set before we got a colored TV. (I know, that is is old!) There is something about a horse race that is mesmerizing. I know that all sorts of races are fun for many to watch, but to me, there

Eat Some Chocolate...... - 05/06/11 06:16 PM
We got a little reminder from one of the great Home Inspectors here in Southern Utah yesterday. It was his regular newsletter with a Nestles Crunch Bar, on the back of the bar he had pasted a label that said: "Always put eat some chocolate at the top of your "To Do List". That way you can always say that you accomplished something! I think that there is some wisdom in that, not just because I love chocolate! Rather, most humans build their self esteem and confidence through accomplishing something. I am not advocating going out and eating some chocolate every

Thankful Thursday...Thoughts and ideas..... - 05/05/11 01:40 PM
I am grateful for Active Rain. For many months I have had a goal of writing at least 10 blogs a week, every week. There have been a few months when I didn't quite achieve that goal, but all in all I have been able to attain it. There have been days when I have had the ideas for up to 5 posts in one day. I try to use the draft mode and write them, then publish them to either members only or public views during the week. With the 31 days of May Challenge, I have tried to be

Cedar City Events....Commencement..... - 05/04/11 05:59 PM
I know that I am jumping the gun a little bit, but the For Rent signs have been springing up all around the Southern Utah University Campus. Commencement is Friday, but the UHauls have also began to disappear from the UHaul dealers, so it must be time! It seems odd that the University will be out so early in the Month, but it is happening. The ceremony of Commencement is at 4:30 PM on Friday. This turns some of the areas around campus into that vacant, near ghost town status. I know that it won't be long until the students return

Tech Tuesday... - 05/03/11 04:10 PM
Darcy and I just returned to our office from the office's 2nd Tech Tuesday. Tech Tuesday is an idea that came from our regular office meeting wherein the Realtors in our office get together and share information on tech tools to help us succeed. It's format is similar to RE Bar camp, we just get together and discuss a particular topic. Today, we went over Facebook and how we can use it in Real Estate. These sessions have been really beneficial in building office harmony, I know that we're all competitors, but it is a friendly competition. Besides, it is really

Tuesday's Thoughts...Baseball and things..... - 05/03/11 12:02 PM
I have been trying to think of something deep and profound to write into a blog for the 31 day challenge. I was sick of the News Media's coverage of the Mission to take out Ossama Bin Ladin. Don't get me wrong, I feel the same National Pride as many of you do, I am extremely grateful to those brave Navy Seals who not fearing what could go wrong, who accepted and carried out this Mission. I get that it is an important objective on the War on Terror. I just don't like the overkill from the media! So I turned

Monday's Musings...The Royal Wedding..... - 05/02/11 05:49 PM
I have refrained from commenting or writing about the Royal Wedding, to be honest, until I read the cost estimates, it didn't interest me. But I will be honest, when I read that this wedding was going to cost between $34 and $60 MILLION DOLLARS, I thought to myself, what could that buy in Cedar City. If the wedding does come in at the High end of $60 Million, here, you could have bought all 331 houses, condos and town houses that are for sale in our Multiple Listing Service and have $5 Million left over for upgrades! The 331 represent

Monday's Motivational Thought....Emerson - 05/02/11 11:21 AM
One of my favorite sources for quotes is Ralph Waldo Emerson. He had some great ideas and opinions that are still applicable today. I read this in an email that I received this morning, it so impressed me that I stopped reading my email to write this blog! "Without ambition one starts nothing. Without work one finishes nothing. The prize will not be sent to you. You have to win it. The man who knows how will always have a job. The man who also knows why will always be his boss. As to methods there may be a million

I mentioned in an earlier post that today would have been my Mother's 81st Birthday today. She so loved Southern Utah and it's beautiful vistas. So I thought that I would share some more of those views that she loved so very much! Parowan Rock Church, on the opposite side the kids in town when my mother was young would play softball and baseball there. The library is in the location of their baseball diamond. It was a point of pride to those playing at that time if you could hit a ball past the rock church! Cedar Breaks

May 1...Day One of the 31 Days of May Challenge..... - 05/01/11 01:15 AM
May 1st has always been a special day in my life. Today would have been my Mother's 81st Birthday. She passed away 8 years ago to ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease. She was like so many Mothers are, very instrumental in my life. I remember her coaching my Little League Baseball team when the assigned coach was too busy working to be able to do it. She is the reason that we live here in Cedar City, she was born and raised in Parowan, just North of Cedar City. The work was in Northern Utah when she and my Dad were
