New Series...Subdivisions in The Cedar City Area

Darcy and I thought that it would be a good idea to highlight some of the subdivisions that we work in. We are starting with those subdivisions in and around Cedar City. We will work into the other cities and towns. This is an evolving idea, I hope that you like it!

The first subdivision that we are highlighting is Spring Creek. It is actually in the county just outside of Cedar City limits. This is an older subdivision and is a mix of "stick built" and manufactured homes. This subdivision has large lots over 2 acres which makes them great for horses or small "gentleman's" ranches, here are a few photos:

It seems like yesterday....................

It honestly seems like yesterday that I began blogging and commenting on blogs here at Active Rain. I know that I have learned far more than I have taught, but it has been a lot of fun being a member of this community. I still have so much more to learn, and I do enjoy the great collection of knowledge and experience that is contained here at Active Rain.

This post puts Darcy and I over the 300,000 point mark, and while I know that points are just a way to keep people involved, it does mean something to us that we have been involved and feel such a kinship with so many here. I have not met a lot of you, my friends, face to face, but I still think of you as my friends. I look forward the incredible photographs that so many of you take and share with us almost as much as I enjoy the wisdom of the blogs.

So I again say thank you for your wisdom, for sharing your talents with us, thank you for putting up with us, and most of all thank you for being our friends!

I found this photo in my files. I remember when we took it I thought who would put a fence out here in the middle of nowhere. Hence the the title. It is west of Cedar City. I can't remember when we took the photo, but it is beautiful, albeit quiet and lonely valley!

Cedar City Happenings...November

If you run out of things to do and would rather not go shopping on November 27th, you could bring the children up to Cedar City for the American Children's Christmas Festival. It begins on the 27th and will run to the 7th of December. There will be many activities for young and old alike. It will most likely be cold, so be prepared for any outdoor events!

Where Did November go?????

I am working at the office this morning, which isn't all bad. It is good to check in on Monday to see how things are going. Darcy is at an MLS meeting for our local board of Realtors, so I drove in alone. Pulling into the driveway I noticed that the business next door was putting up their Christmas lights, I was watching traffic so I didn't notice that the windows of our office have also been painted with a Christmas theme.

I don't remember having Thanksgiving, I watched some football yesterday, but I don't remember eating large quantities of turkey, stuffing and the rest! I know that this is tongue in cheek, but it does seem that we begin our preparations earlier every year! I shouldn't be surprised, the Walmart had a Christmas section about the time that Labor Day was past.

For retailers I realize that this is their "black" period. This is when they make their money, it just seems that we are wishing our time to pass more quickly by! I liked it when the Christmas lights went up after Thanksgiving! We seemed to be more relaxed then, maybe it was just because I was a lot younger and everything seemed more casual to me.

Just a reminder to buyers, even with the Holidays, it is still a great time to buy! Inventory is high, and competition seems to lesson until after the first of the year. These are just a couple of reasons that it is a great time to buy, there is still time to be into your home before the Holidays but only if you hurry! Anyway, it isn't a time to think that you shouldn't be looking to buy Real Estate, rather it is a time to make a good deal!

Darcy and I made our monthly trip to Costco. We like to go to Costco, it does require us to drive to Saint George to do so, but that is alright the weather down there right now is a lot better than ours. Driving back we came across some really interesting photo ops.

New Harmony......

As I was putting together my blogs on the cities that we work in here in Iron County along Interstate 15. I want everyone to realize that there are communities west of Cedar City that I haven't yet featured in this series. I haven't been out there in a while, so when I get out there I will get some photographs and feature them. They are New Castle, Beryl and Modena in Iron County. There is also Enterprise in Washington County.

This brings me to this blog, New Harmony is a little over 25 miles South of Cedar City, it is in Washington County and along I15. We do work in New Harmony, so I will do a feature on it. New Harmony is named after Harmony Pennsylvania, where many of the early settlers of the area were from. It is a city that really is spread out over a large area, with large farms and ranches that are still worked. There are some older homes as well as some gorgeous mini mansions.

The original part of New Harmony is several miles West of Interstate 15, but Harmony Ranches is right along the Interstate. These photos are taken just outside of the original part of New Harmony:

As you can see, New Harmony sits at the base of Pine Valley Mountain, the ridge that is in the sunlight along with a large part of the Mountain were burned in the fires last summer.

Foto Friday...More of Grandpa Chet's Photos from the Korean War..........

I wrote a blog on Veteran's Day about Darcy's Grandfather Chet Wynkoop, when he died we copied a lot of the photographs that he had in his things. While we know that these are from his time in the US Army during the Korean War, we really don't know much more than that. He never really discussed where in Korea he served during the War.

I am guessing that this was either a cook tent or possibly a mess tent.

More of an Urban scene.

We found these photos to be interesting and wanted to share them, we didn't take them, nor have either of us ever been to Korea or the Far East. We do not know where exactly these photos are, but hope that you will enjoy them!

It is a stormy afternoon here in Cedar City, we have received a couple of inches of snow, but hey, it is November 13th! Darcy and I are working floor at the office, it is not the most productive floor time when the weather is stormy. At least that's how it works in our office! I am trying to think of some blog material and thinking that I wish that I was doing what our dogs are doing. They are or were coiled up in their favorite spots the couch, well next to being on our bed, (which is where they're not supposed to be,) keeping warm and dry:

Who ever said that a dog's life was tough? I am thinking that sometimes we have a lot to learn from the dogs!

Kanarraville..................

Continuing our series of cities and towns in Iron County along the Interstate 15 we come to Kanarraville. Kanarraville is a little over 20 miles South of Cedar City. It is a small community that was named after a Paiute Indian Chief that was killed after being thrown from a horse. There are still several ranches and farms in Kanarraville. It also has some luxury homes on acreage. It is another of the gems of Iron County:

Happy Veteran's Day Grandpa Chet!

Darcy's Grandfather, Chet Wynkoop, was a Veteran, first he served as a Merchant Marine in World War II, then he was in Army during our forgotten war, Korea. Like a lot of Veteran's he didn't talk a lot about his service to us. I know that he was in the Atlantic during World War II, and that his ship was sunk at one point leaving him and his mates to spend 3 days in the water.

During Korea he was a Sargent in the US Army. That is pretty much all I know of his service there, I know that he saw action in Korea, but that's about it. We do have some photos of his time in the US Army, that I would like to share:

This photograph came into our possession after Grandpa Chet had passed away, so we didn't have the opportunity to ask him for any details about it. I just thought that it looked like a beautiful estate.

Happy Birthday Dad............

I know that it is Veteran's Day, but it is also my Dad's birthday. I remember as a child thinking that my dad must be real cool, his birthday is a Holiday! I won't write how old my dad would be today. He died several years ago, I just wanted to make sure to remember him on this, his birthday.

I wish that I would have learned all that my dad tried to teach me when I was a youngster, I would like to think that some of that great knowledge sunk into my thick skull! I was in my early 20's when he died, so I am at the point where he has been gone longer that he was with me here on earth. I know that someday I will see my father again, I do believe that. I am not wishing to rush to that meeting, but it is something that I look foreward to!

One of the things that I do miss is the opportunity to ask for a little advice, my dad, he was the greatest. He had a way of giving you advice that you didn't always know that he was advising or teaching you. I miss his playful sense of humor, the practical joking, but most of all the wisdom and the strength. He was one that came of age in the Great Depression, went through the shortages and hardships of World War II, he was 4F multiple hernias kept him from military service, although he attempted to enlist many times.

I think that I got my love of real estate from my father, he was a carpenter. He helped build many of the big buildings in Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. The one thing my dad could do was look at a room and tell if the walls were straight and square.

I am so blessed that I am my father's son, so on this your birthday dad; I say again: Happy Birthday!

Cedar City, Utah

I am now going to use a few photographs of Cedar City, which is the next city along Interstate 15 as one travels South. Cedar City is the second oldest city in Iron County. It is the home of Southern Utah University, the Utah Shakespearean Festival, as well as numerous other festivals. I have a lot of photos of Cedar City, so I have many to show and chose from. It is the largest city in Iron County.

I am sorry I couldn't get the gas station sign out without a lot of photo shopping. Cedar City is home to the Iron mines where the county gets it's name.

This one is looking from the West side of Cedar City. Southern Utah University is the left side of the buildings near the top.

The above shot is one that I have used before, it is of Cedar City looking down from The Mountain.

Enoch, Utah

I am continuing my little series of Towns that we work in here in Iron County. Enoch is an interesting city, originally a group of farms with few houses, it has become more or less a little bedroom community of Cedar City. Which is unique, as Cedar City isn't really that large of a city. It is also unique as it is one the one community that is situated West of Interstate 15. Cedar City has part of the city West of the Interstate, but it has spread that direction.

Part of this equation has made it difficult to get a very good photograph of the city. Anyway, here it is:

Enoch is also unique in that most of the lots are at least .4 of an acre, so it really gives the feeling of being out in country. It draws is name from the Bible. It is a nice city and easily the second largest in Iron County.

Summit, Utah

This is another in the now series that we are putting together about the beautiful towns that we also work in. We are blessed to have several of these really nice communities, some are larger than others but all enjoy very beautiful surroundings. This is Summit, Utah; one of the smallest of the communities along Interstate 15 in Iron County.

This photograph was taken from a dirt frontage road east of Interstate 15. Summit is the town that is the highest in elevation along Interstate 15 in Utah.

Parowan Utah..................

This is another distance photo only this one is of Parowan, Utah. Parowan is approximately 15 miles North of Cedar City. I thought that I would take photos of some of the smaller towns that we work in. Parowan is the County Seat of Iron County and is often called the "Mother City" of Southern Utah as most of the Pioneers that settled other communities came from or started from Parowan. This photograph is taken from Old Highway 91 South West of Parowan.

Parowan is another town whose name comes from a Native American word, this time it means evil water or bad water. There is a lake west of town called the Little Salt Lake, it is mostly a dry lake, but in times past, it did have water, which was bad:

Much like most of Iron County, Parowan is another jewel along Interstate 15. As you can see it is located in a very beautiful valley!

Paragonah................

One of the great things about living in the Iron County area is that there are several small towns that we work in besides Cedar City. One of them is the town of Paragonah, it is approximately 20 miles North of Cedar City and is honestly one of the jewels in Iron County. The name is pronounced "Paragoonah", which is derived from a Native American word meaning sweet or good water. This is a photograph to show just how picturesque the town is from Interstate 15. This photo was taken from atop a bridge crossing I15:

As you can see there are still several farms and ranches in and around Paragonah, but it sets in absolutely gorgeous surroundings. It is a very quaint, and beautiful small town.

Bankruptcy and Fannie Mae

Darcy and I have a deal that we thought would sail through, a great buyer with her financing in place, a town home that she absolutely loves and an accepted offer from Fannie Mae. The problem is that Fannie Mae doesn't actually own the home yet. The home was included in the previous owner's bankruptcy which was filed just prior to the actual foreclosure.

With all of the foreclosures on the market here and everywhere, the Title company initially thought that it was just a clerical error and that Fannie Mae probably owned the home, but that we needed to verify whether it did or not. Apparently it doesn't, at least not yet, the bottom line is that someone screwed up! Our buyer is a first time home buyer and was looking forward to the stimulus credit to do some repairs to the unit and was sure that she was going to miss out on this opportunity!

I am glad that Congress and the President agreed to extend this program, I will be honest, this is the only part of the bail out/stimulus package that made sense to me. I would have agreed with money being spent on rebuilding infrastructure, but that is another topic for another blog. Anyway, there is a sliver of silver lining for our client with this extension passing, now we have more than 3 weeks to get things worked out.

I do hope that no one else experiences this! I am also very glad that we have Title Companies that really do a good job! I guess that this is enough of a rant. I wish everyone a great weekend!

Right now in history it seems that there is a lot of doom and gloom prevalent in the world. It is way too easy to get caught up in the misery of the World. If we are to rise out of this we need to not fall prey to the doom and gloom philosophy that is permeating our lives. Regardless of how dark it may seem, we need to look for the silver lining in the clouds of despair that hover over us!
