Honor Flight of Southeastern North Carolina is a non-profit program operated entirely by volunteers. The Wilmington NC headquarters is affiliated with the national Honor Flight Network and serves veterans of Southeastern North Carolina and surrounding areas. Area veterans are flown at no cost to Washington DC to see the World War II memorial, which was completed in 2004, as well as other nearby monuments. They will be assisted by guardians who can help with mobility or medical needs. Honor Flight Southeastern North Carolina's Inaugural flight is April 13, 2010. The festival consists of craft vendors, concessions, car shows, family entertainment, a children's area, River Race, Fireworks, and much more. Besides allowing us all to enjoy the culture and heritage of the Cape Fear River, the festival awards scholarships for marine related studies at Cape Fear Community College. Friday, February 13th is the start of the 12th Annual Backyard Bird Count. This event is FREE. IT is sponsored by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The purpose is to get citizens involved to assist scientists in keeping tabs on local bird populations. The only requirement is time and patience. Participants count birds, anywhere, for a minimum of 15 minutes or as long as they have the time during the four-day period. Wilmington NC will officially open its newest park, James E.L. Wade Park, on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at 10:30 am. The city's newest park is located at the end of Bethel Road, off Waltmoor Drive. The Bethel Road Stormwater Wetland was completed mid-2007. The design helped improve water quality in Hewlett's Creek. The park is located on the wetlands. It includes a 3/4 mile path, a picnic shelter, three bridges, restroom and playground.

Independence Mall in Wilmington will host Treefest, January 25-26, 2008, Wilmington's annual tree give away. This event was organized by a committee of several local and state groups, such as Keep America Beautiful, the North Carolina Forest Service and the New Hanover County Parks Department, TreeFest plans to distribute up to 10,000 seedlings taken from the Division of Forestry's nursery in Goldsboro. Local residents are invited to attend the festival. It begins at 10 am in the JCPenney wing of Independence Mall. Residents can take home up to five trees each.
