Cape Fear Community College received 350-acres donated as a nature preserve., by local donor, Nathan Sanders.  The property has designated for research, education and enjoyment of natural beauty.  The donation is the first of its kind for the college.
The property is lush with marsh grasses, plants, cypress trees, home to wildcats, herons, owls and other wildlife.
The reserve has almost a mile of frontage along the Cape Fear River and Motts Creek, as well as several thousand feet of other creeks, fresh water ponds and marshes. The preserve features two distinctly different types of environments - brackish tidal-influenced areas and nontidal freshwater areas.

The City of Wilmington NC will be holding tennis clinics for children and adults at Empie Park, 3300 block of Park Avenue, beginning in April and running through November..
Clinics are open to adult beginner and intermediate players and children aged 4-16. A local USTA Instructor will be leading each class. The sessions are limited to ten participants.
The classes cost $75 for each participant, or $50 for city discount cardholders.

Friday, February 13th is the start of the 12th Annual Backyard Bird Count.
This event is FREE.  IT is sponsored by the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.  The purpose is to get citizens involved to assist scientists in keeping tabs on local bird populations.  The only requirement is time and patience.  Participants count birds, anywhere, for a minimum of 15 minutes or as long as they have the time during the four-day period.  Then they report the largest number of birds of each species seen together at any one time.

Tucked away at the southern tip of New Hanover County is the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher.  Locals and visitors alike enjoy a trip to the aquarium to view marine life, and it's a favorite for school field trips.  The aquarium has recently added a new outreach vehicle.  This was purchased after the aquarium received a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern NC and $55,000 from the NC Aquarium Society.
