In honor of National Flag Day on June 14, here are some rules for displaying and handling the flag at your home:
When the flag is displayed from a staff projecting from a window, balcony, or a building, the union should be at the peak of the staff unless the flag is at half staff. The flag should be raised briskly and lowered slowly and ceremoniously. Ordinarily it should be displayed only between sunrise and sunset. It should be illuminated if displayed at night. You would probably agree that Christmas is the most wasteful holiday (wrapping paper, food, decorations, etc.).  So here are ten tips from 5 Minutes for Going Green to "green up" your holiday:
1.  Buy a quality fake Christmas tree and use it forever, or buy a live tree to plant every year.
2.  Send digital Christmas party invitations and cards, or buy ones that are made from recycled paper.
3.  Make your own Christmas tree ornaments using natural and/or edible materials like gingerbread cookies, popcorn, and candy canes.

Just a couple of days ago, I shared some tips for saving energy during the holidays.  Well, this post goes completely against that theme - but I couldn't pass up the chance to mention a national story with a local connection. A CNN article featured home holiday decorations in several states, including a Pittsburgh house located on Beryl Drive in the South Hills:
"With an outdoor display of 150,000 Christmas lights, Bob and Raquel Cox saw their electric bill increase $400 last December. This year, the couple expects to pay an even larger bill: They strung 210,000 lights outside their Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, home.

holiday: Holiday Home Tour in Peters Township - Don't Miss It! - 12/03/08 12:18 AM
On Sunday, December 7th, you can tour five homes in Peters Township as part of the annual Holiday Home Tour. 
Presented by The Watchful Shepherd, an organization dedicated to child abuse prevention, and sponsored by Keller Williams Realty, this year's tour features homes on Woods Lane, Farmview Place, Diamond Drive, Redwood Drive and Hardwood Drive.
Tickets cost $35 and can be purchased at Keller Williams Realty in Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon Floral and Today's Tiffany Lamp in Mt. Lebanon, and several stores in Peters Township, Canonsburg and Washington (in addition to others).

holiday: Start Your Holiday Celebrations with Pittsburgh's Light Up Night - 11/19/08 01:12 AM
Kick off the holiday season on Friday, November 21, by spending the day downtown at Pittsburgh's annual Light Up Night celebration. Events will include the tree lighting, Santa Spectacular, the opening of the PPG Place ice rink, and a fireworks finale at Point State Park at 9 pm.  Check out the list of scheduled events.
And don't forget that the next 6 Saturdays in Pittsburgh are special, too. Starting November 22, there will be downtown events, promotions, strolling carolers, street performers, and free horse-drawn carriage rides and trips on the Holly Trolley.  For more information, visit the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership website.
