Oyster Bay Cove, New York, an incorporated village next to Oyster Bay, is the most beautiful place on the North Shore of Long Island. OYSTER FESTIVAL IN OYSTER BAY, NY THIS WEEKEND - OCT. 17-18, 2009

Oyster Bay, NY is the place to be this weekend - Oct. 17-18, 2009 for the 26^th annual Oyster Festival. It is the largest waterfront festival on the East Coast. It opens at 11:00 AM and ends at 6:00 PM.

There will be plenty to eat at the food court, rides for the kids, petting zoo, oyster eating contest, raffles, arts & crafts and food galore. There will be a pirate section for kids with demonstrations and interactive treasure hunt. The main attraction this weekend is the oysters. Enjoy them fried, in stew or just cold on a half shell with a squirt of lemon and dash of hot sauce. The oysters being featured come from the Oyster Bay Harbor, delivered fresh courtesy of Dave Relyea and the Frank M. Flower and Sons, Inc. Oyster Company

In addition to oysters and other seafood, there are choices of hamburgers, funnel cakes and fried Oreos. They also have bratwurst, tacos, gyros, potato, steak sandwiches, homemade sausage and peppers, potato pancakes, zeppolis, and even knishes. The Oyster Bay Chamber of Commerce will host an Elias Pekale antique show on Audrey Avenue. There will be a 5K run at 9:00 AM on Saturday. An oyster eating and shucking contest will be on Saturday at 2 PM on the Verizon West End Avenue Stage. Come see if Oyster Shucking champion Dave Menahan of Long Beach will retain his title for the tenth time.

The Oyster Festival is bringing a truly beautiful tall ship Clipper City and a local hard-working tugboat Cornell, constructed in the Jacobson shipyard in Oyster Bay 50 years ago, for viewing at the Western Waterfront. U.S.S. Growler and U.S.S. Liberator from the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point will also be here.

Christeen, the oldest oyster sloop in America originally built in 1883 will also grace the festival.

Optimum, the Ultimate Air Dogs and the United Kennel Club bring a collection of some of the country's most impressive dock-diving canines. Dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds will amaze crowds as they compete against each other taking leaps off a 40-foot dock and pool in "Ultimate Air" mixing long-distance diving with rounds of competition called "Splashes." Also, check out "Fetch It" - A combination both height and distance. Measures how far a dog can jump while grabbing a bumper suspended 4' above the water and ‘Catch-It'. Free. Revenues from the festival will help over two dozen non-profit organizations in Oyster Bay. The Oyster Festival is organized and operated by the Oyster Bay Rotary Club.

If the weather cooperates, there is a chance we can get as much as 200,000 people in the two days (Saturday & Sunday) of the Oyster Festival. The Oyster Festival has grown so big that it has been relocated to a bigger space by the beach few years ago. It used to be in town but the town could not really pack so many people downtown. By two o'clock, you could barely move, it was so crowded. When they moved it to the waterfront, the Oyster Festival got bigger with more food stalls and the arts & crafts section doubled and now includes rides and entertainment for kids.

You can either come by car, by LIRR or by sea. The Sagamore Yacht Club, a short walk to the park offers moorings/anchorage. Call 516-922-0555. For parking, there are designated parking areas throughout the town. Free parking and free shuttle bus service are available. There is also an expanded LIRR schedule to Oyster Bay with special excursion fare from Penn Station and Jamaica. No pets are allowed in Theodore Roosevelt Park. This is also a non- alcohol event although restaurants in town sells beer in their premises. So come on over and enjoy our festival. Nothing like it in Long Island.

LOCAL CHAPTER OF THE CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS CELEBRATED 90-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Last Sunday, I took a break from real estate to be with 50 or so members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Sacred Heart #370 to celebrate our 90-year anniversary. We started the day with a mass at St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay, NY with the choir singing. The officers in their official robes joined the procession. The Rev. Msgr. James Collins Memorial Choir sang glorious music. I sang with the Choir and then joined the CDA members later for lunch at Epiphany Restaurant in Glen Cove, NY.

The lunch was organized by all the living past regents (presidents) of which I was one of them. We had a display of 4 collages of events over the years. I did research on the history of the CDA organization since the inception of the national organization and our own installation in 1919.

Background

The Knight of Columbus finding a need for a national organization for women, decided to institute courts of up to 50 charter members, mostly wives, sweethearts and friends of the Knights. The National Order of the Daughters of Isabella with John E. Carberry as the First Supreme Regent started in 1903 in Utica, New York. It was not until 1915 that Mary McKernan served as the first woman supreme regent.

Sixteen years later, Court Sacred Heart #370 was chartered on June 1, 1919 with 35 charter members and Helene Mahon Horan was the First Grand Regent. We started our Court when Genevieve Walsh was the Supreme Regent.

The Daughters of Isabella held eight Biennial Conventions before official action was taken to change the organization's name from the National Order of the Daughters of Isabella to the Catholic Daughters of America. This decision came on April 9, 1921 at the Ninth Biennial Convention.

On the 75^th anniversary of Catholic Daughters of America in 1978, at the convention in New York City, the delegates voted to change the name Catholic Daughters of America to The Catholic Daughters of the Americas and in June 1979, by decree of the Supreme Court of the State of New York this title became official.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas has 95,000 members in more than 1,400 courts (local chapters) in 45 states across the United States, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Guam, and the Virgin Islands engaged in Spiritual and Social action programs in every area of society.

Membership and Dues

In the ‘40s, growth in membership had slowed down. As a matter of fact, it was going down and hit a record low of 31 members in 1952. Then it started flourishing again when Catherine Johnson was the regent. Membership really gained momentum in the late 50's when Lily Conklin was the Regent. Membership was 89 when she started and hit 156 before she left the office. The next regent was Jane Donnelly and she took in 28 members. Then Ann Bifulco came when we hit the highest of 208 in 1960.

In 1919 there was an initiation fee of $2 to join. Our dues in 1919 was $.50 per quarter but was raised to $1.00 per quarter the following year and it continued at the same rate till 1969 when it was raised to $5. In 1994 during our 75^th year, our dues were $15.00. Our dues of $25 now are really small compared to dues of $4.00 in 1919.

Office and Password

At the National Biennial Convention held in 1966, the title Supreme Regent was changed to National Regent and Grand Regent changed to Regent.

In the early years, there was also an office called the monitor who was in charge of the flag and banner at all meetings and ceremonies. This was eliminated in the 80's. The office of the Second Vice Regent was also eliminated.

There was a time too when ceremonials were very strict on attire. We used to wear cap with the robe and white gloves and white shoes. Jewelry was forbidden. No earrings were allowed. Little by little, rules were eased off. Out went the cap, then the white gloves. Small earrings like pearl studs were allowed but no dangling earrings.

Meetings

During the early days, no one is admitted to the meeting room while there was a speaker on the floor. In those days you were also issued a password and nobody was allowed to the convention hall or meeting without it and the monitor collected them before the meeting.

CDA in Washington, DC.

When the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was built in Washington, D.C. the Catholic Daughters donated the five altars behind the main altar at a cost of $250,000.

In 1974 the Catholic Daughters, in commemoration of the upcoming Bicentennial of the Nation in 1976 decided to endow a Chair in "American Catholic Church History" at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

In 1986 we helped again in the CDA pledge of $500,000 made to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops/United States Catholic Conference to assist the Bishops with their relocation project in Washington, D.C.

Circle of Love Program

In 1996 at the convention in Tampa, Florida, we adopted the "The Circle of Love" Program. It is a seven-point program that will assist members in working with the Church and community to address the needs of society that are deeply affecting today's generation, the seniors and human life. The general goals are to develop leaders from the membership, improve spiritual enhancement of members and friends, improve the quality of life issues by helping to prevent domestic violence, child abuse and addictions.

March for Life which Terri Walston and some ladies went in Washington, DC and on Route 110, Melville, NY., Scott bar codes - The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island

Morality in Media - In 1992, the national board unanimously approved the WRAP Program - White Ribbons Against Pornography. In 1995 we joined the fight against pornography in late October. That year, we distributed 800 flyers and 1000 white ribbons.

Priest Appreciation Day - the first Sunday in June was designated by CDA to honor priests for their faithful support of the CDA in addition to their many other duties.

Fundraising Activities

In the ‘70s and ‘80s, we used to have Fashion Shows with our members doing the modeling.

At some point, we also had Spaghetti Dinner where members did all the cooking.

No catholic organization can do without Bingo and we had Bingo Nights years ago and were very popular. We also had Chinese Auction in the ‘90s.

Father's Day Bake Sale has been a tradition for years. In '97, we introduced the Super Bowl Bake Sale. It was an instant success so we decided to stay with it.

We had Ice Cream Social at Rosalinda Morgan's Rose Garden for ten years.

The Tea Party was introduced in 2005 and today it is the most successful fundraiser ever.

Laurel Hollow in the township of Oyster Bay is a beautiful village with magnificent homes on large wooded acreage. It is located between the waterfront villages of Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay Cove. The school district is partly Oyster Bay, Syosset and Cold Spring Harbor. Likewise, the post office is serviced by Oyster Bay 11771, Syosset 11791 or Cold Spring Harbor 11724. Laurel Hollow is a very private enclave, strictly a residential community. There is no business establishment in the village. People shop in nearby towns, either in Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, Syosset or Huntington.

Laurel Hollow is mostly hilly with an abundance of specimen trees and understory of mountain laurel hence the name. The most well known resident was Louis Comfort Tiffany who built Laurelton Hall. Louis C. Tiffany is credited with the stained glass windows, Tiffany lamp and iridescent Tiffany vases.

HOMES FOR SALE IN OYSTER BAY, NY 11771 - SEPT. 22, 2009

There are 56 homes for sale in Oyster Bay as of September 22, 2009. There were 24 properties sold in Oyster Bay in 2009. Sales of homes in Oyster Bay are picking up but prices are still going down. There is no new construction.

Few years ago, the town imposed a building moratorium after a builder tore down the Youngs family home on Burtis Ave and Kellogg St. and built 3 huge houses on the property. Next to it, another house, a small red Dutch colonial was sold and tore down and in its place another huge house stands now. These new homes and another one on Summers St. upset the old time residents and it also triggered the formation of a group called Save the Jewels by the Bay.

New zoning laws have been implemented to prevent sub-division and overdevelopment of lots and the town adopted the Oyster Bay Hamlet Residence Design District. The district's purpose was to establish a framework within which certain special standards can be developed and implemented that are applicable to the unique town of Oyster Bay. These standards include a restriction to the floor area ratio of homes. It is a method of controlling the size of houses to prevent unduly large homes. This is important because by reducing the size of a new home that you can build, it reduces the incentive for tear downs and helps to preserve the aesthetic character of the town.

OYSTER BAY CONDOS/CO-OPS SOLD - JAN. 1 - SEPT. 13, 2009

For the period Jan. 1 to Sept. 13, 2009, there are 10 condos/co-ops/townhouses in Oyster Bay, NY that are sold - one co-op sold at Lexington Estates, 4 co-ops sold at Top of the Harbor, 4 townhouses sold at Mariners' Walk and one townhouse sold at Fieldstone. There are 24 condos/co-ops/townhouses in Oyster Bay on the market as of Sept. 13, 2009 in all price ranges from a studio at Lexington Estates for $180,000 to $1,175,000 for a 4 BRs, 4 Baths at Fieldstone in Oyster Bay.

It looks like the market is picking up. At my last report on June 7, there were only 5 condos/co-ops/townhouses sold in Oyster Bay during the first six months. Within a matter of three months, the sale has doubled and there are also 4 co-ops that are under contract as of Sept. 13, 2009 - two at Lexington Estates and two at Top of the Harbor.

OYSTER BAY CONDOS/COOPS FOR SALE - SEPT. 13, 2009

There are other types of housing in Oyster Bay if you do not want the care and upkeep of owning a single family homes. There are multiple family homes, condos, coops or townhouses, apartments, and senior housing. For the purpose of this blog, we'll concentrate on condos, coops or townhouses. There are five areas in Oyster Bay where you can buy condos, coops or townhouses. Right now, there are 24 condos/coops/townhouses for sale in Oyster Bay.

Lexington Estates is on Lexington Ave., Oyster Bay. It is the second driveway on your left from Hess Gas Station at the corner of Lexington Ave and Route 106. Lexington Estates are coops. At Lexington Estates in Oyster Bay, there are 5 coops for sale. Price ranges from $180,000 for a studio, 1 Bath to $265,000 for a 2 BRs, 1 Bath coop. These coops were built in the 60s.

Landmark Colony is few feet down the road on Lexington Ave., Oyster Bay and they are condos. We only have 1 unit for sale at Landmark Colony for $525,000 for a 2 BRs, 2.5 Baths condo. This condo was built in 1982. In the center of this development is a Queen Anne's style home called Derby Estate which was once the home of Ethel Roosevelt Derby, the younger daughter of President Theodore Roosevelt.

Further down the road is Top of the Harbour. Top of the Harbour can be accessed either from Lexington Ave or Mill River Rd in Oyster Bay. Year ago, these are regular apartments then they turned into coops. There are 3 coops for sale at Top of the Harbor, 1 with 1 BR, 1 Bath and 2 with two BRs, 1Bath. Prices range from $218,000 to $369,000. These coops were built in the 60s and 70s.

Mariners'Walk, on South Street are newly constructed townhouses in Oyster Bay built in 2008. Prices on Mariners' Walk in Oyster Bay range from $589,000 to $735,000. They are all 2 BRs and 2.5 Baths. There are 14 townhouses for sale at Mariners' Walk in Oyster Bay right now. Mariners' Walk townhouses are all new constructions on three floors. Elevator is an option. There is also a clubhouse for homeowners' use.

On Berry Hill Rd, we have Fieldstone which is homeowner association. At Fieldstone in Oyster Bay, the original house on the property is for sale right now. It is priced at $1,175,000 for 4 BRs, 4 Baths. This townhouse was built in 1958.
