How To Be Interesting - 02/26/09 09:01 PM
Have you ever wondered how certain people are constantly drawing people and opportunity to themselves?  This particular type of person could be put into any room with any type of crowd and easily be able to form relationships and win people over.
How is this done?  Why are some people widely perceived as more interesting than others?  To answer this question I polled participants in a speed networking event (think speed dating, but professional).  The answers might surprise you.
When polled about people that they found most interesting, those being interviewed most often described a person that engages in conversation and … (18 comments)

Procrastination Only Delays Success - 02/26/09 12:02 AM
Ok, so I've been building up this "to do" list.  Gradually accumulating tasks that need to be done, but for whatever reason can wait until I feel inspired to tackle them.
Unfortunately this has become predictable behavior for me, stacking up tasks around my goals and waiting till I really shouldn't wait anymore, before delving in head first and knocking them out.
Today was a knock out day.  Every time I have a knock out day, at the end I feel so relieved and accomplished.  Each time I end up asking myself why I waited so long.  Why do I put … (4 comments)

Networking - Take All Comers - 02/24/09 10:33 PM
Business networking is on almost everyone's mind.  Business owners everywhere are looking for new income streams.  We can no longer take referrals for granted.  Now is the time to go out and actively look for referral partners to grow business with.
At business networking meetings, the question is often fronted: "What makes a good referral for you?"
I would like to pose the question: "What makes a good referral partner?"
Many times in looking for centers of influence to align ourselves with, we are too quick to look at obvious matches and ignore less obvious alternatives.  Realtors search for Builders to … (2 comments)

Celebrating A Personal Milestone - Thanks ActiveRain! - 02/24/09 08:35 PM
It's been a month since my first blog post on active rain.  I'm sure my ActiveRain story isn't that much different than thousands of other users, but I want to take a minute to reflect on my progress, because it's important to recognize one's own milestones.
In looking back over the past month, I'm struck by how easy it's been to be consistent at blogging.  Initially I expected it to be hard to sit down and actually produce content that people might be interested in on a daily basis.  But as the days passed the task actually became a joy.  I think … (3 comments)

Web 2.0 - Getting Connected - How much is enough? - 02/23/09 09:38 PM
We all find ourselves in an exciting and dynamic time where it seems like technology is constantly handing us new tools to help build our businesses.  If you're like me, perhaps you've found yourself getting overwhelmed by all your Web 2.0 marketing options.
Many of these networking platforms share the a common characteristic - the ability to grow huge networks of connections.  It's in our nature to think bigger is better.  I would like to question that notion.
The quest for numbers is most apparent to me in my experience on twitter.  I routinely see twitter users with 10 to 50 thousand … (5 comments)

Pimp Your Backlinks - 02/21/09 10:53 PM
I thought I would throw this out there for those of you who are looking to connect all of their presences throughout cyberspace with some cool web 2.0 buttons.  If you're looking for back links to increase your SEO results, you might as well look good when getting the job done, right?  Who says you have to have boring text links?  Hopefully this little tutorial will be helpful.
The pictures below are ones that I've chosen to use and work well with my setups.  If you would prefer to use other pictures/buttons, it's easy by starting an account at Photobucket.  Upload … (0 comments)

How To Present Value - 02/20/09 02:28 PM
In growing a business, it's easy to get caught up in our own agenda.  I know I've been guilty of it.  Spurred on by the demands of our job and our family it's too easy to get locked in our own perspective.  Failing to look at things from our client's viewpoint can cost us a lot of business.
Take some cues from the type of advertising that you're seeing on TV.  What are the big guys doing to present value to their client base?  They're either using comedy for mass marketing (Real Men of Genius) or they're appealing to the values … (0 comments)

My Average Client - My Karate Kid Moment - 02/19/09 05:14 PM
When my mentor first asked me to describe my average client, I bristled at the task.  "I don't have an average client." I thought.  My clients are diverse, some young - just getting started, and some were well established.  I have clients of all ages, races, religious creeds!  What does he mean, "Describe your AVERAGE client"?
I wasn't prepared to answer so I let it roll around in my head a little bit.  I went back to my task for the day, but the question was lingering with me.  With every client I talked to, I found myself asking, "Is this my … (2 comments)

Using Twitter to Grow Blog Readers and Blow Up Your Business! - 02/13/09 04:33 PM
When I first started using Active Rain, I was surprised to see the option to link my blog to a twitter account.  I had already heard some of the buzz around Twitter, but at that point I wasn't totally sold.  Still, I thought, why not expose more people to what I have to offer?  So I created a Twitter account and allowed my blog posts to be logged there and didn't think anything more of it for a while.
Buzzzzzzz...that Twitter Buzz seemed to be following me everywhere.  I would overhear conversations at restaurants, read articles, see links on the internet, … (20 comments)

We Believe in Competition and Collaboration - 02/12/09 12:53 PM
We know that some people think competition is a bad word, but those people are only thinking of themselves and not their client bases.  Our businesses develop and improve because of competition.  Competition makes us all better!  We want there to be a little bit of competition in our group, but we don't want it to be a free for all, that's why we only allow two members per profession per chapter.
Competition is great, but collaboration takes great businesses to the next level.  Technology and consumer demands are causing business practices to evolve at an incredible pace.  It's important to … (0 comments)

Referral Statistics - 02/11/09 03:53 PM
A recent poll of businesses showed that 41.4% of businesses count on referrals for over 80% of their sales.  It further showed that nearly one third of businesses receive less than half of their business from referrals, with the remaining businesses somewhere in between.
If you're in the "have not" portion of this poll, no doubt you're wondering how you can increase your share of referrals.  After all, referrals are the most effective and affordable way of increasing your sales and growing your bottom line.  What can you do to position yourself more like the 14.1% of businesses surveyed got 100% … (4 comments)

Jason Sanders got me involved in The Value Pages. I thought it was a great concept. I've been involved in networking groups in the past. What I like about … (0 comments)
