Schoodic Point, Acadia Park's Little Sister

There's a little known part of Acadia National Park at the tip of Schoodic Peninsula. With dramatic views and loop road of its own, around every corner is another piece of pristine coastline. This is what National Parks are there for. My wife and I often go there on an extremely hot day because the ocean breezes are like sticking your head in the refrigerator. Come on now, I know we've all done that on a hot day. Anyway, the one way two lane road is a pleasurable ride with ample opportunities to stopand take pictures or explore. At the southern most extreme is a place where, when the wind and tide is right, the crashing surf must be approached with caution. It's a sight worthwhile.

Obama says "no" to solar panels on the White House

I was sorry to hear that Barack Obama rejected the proposal to return one of the Jimmy Carter era solar panels to the White House roof. The panels were installed in 1979 by President Carter and taken down by President Reagan. The one offered for return was one of 32 panels 6' long. The company Sungevity offered to install panels using up to date technology, but the White House also declined this offer.

Unless I get political, I will have to refrain from any other comment. It would only amount to observation and conjecture. I will encourage any who read this to draw your own conclusions and put pressure on those who can make a change.

Living not far from the Town of Belfast, my wife Bonnie and I love to go there occsionally, just to enjoy the beautiful harbor. This September 5th we got down there for a few hours to witness the Windjammer Festival. There were vendors, displays, PIRATES, and of course, Windjammers. It was a mild day (not too warm) and it was a pleasure strolling around viewing the festivities, and we even ran into some friends.

In the town of Surry, on the Blue Hill Peninsula, you can find a peaceful strip of land with views of Mount Desert Island across the Union River Bay to the east and East Blue Hill across Morgan Bay to the west. Parking at Carrying Place Beach is a great place to start. This dead end road affords dramatic views right to the end. A ride out there and back is only 10 miles, fairly level and traffic free. By the way, real estate on this out of the way is highly sought after and sells at a premium. Prices have not suffered in the current market.

Climate change, the real estate crisis, and unemployment are not just problems on their own, they are all connected. There is no simple reason for the current economic and environmental woes, but one thing is for sure they are all of our own making - ours and the industries that have for so long tried to get us to need more and more. The catch with Green Building and Green Industries is that they only work efficiently if we also change our current lifestyle and learn to conserve. Off the grid energy systems installed in new homes only work if we drastically reduce our load. Photovoltaics and solar water heaters work the best when built into a really well insulated home. Summer on the Blue Hill Peninsula in Downeast Maine wouldn't be complete without walking to the Blue Hill Town Park and enjoying the music of the Flash in the Pans band. This particular evening in July, my wife and I took in an art opening at the Blue Hill Wine Shop before strolling to the park where the evening light on the harbor was adding its own music to the atmosphere. This out of the way New England town is steeped in culture on an old fashioned waterfront born of fishing and the shipping of granite from a quarry nearby. In the summer the population swells with rusticators who have come for generations.

My wife and I went to a late July 4th gathering on Last Wednesday the 8th in a small community comprised of 19th century vacation cottages on the north end of Little Deer Isle offthe coast of Maine. For me the best feature was the old lighthouse in the view, situated on Pumpkin Island. The whole community was once only accessible by steamship and rail. Now you can drive across the Deer Isle Bridge that crosses the Eggemoggin Reach.

When I moved to Maine 35 years ago, it was mostly as a result of the books written by Helen and Scott Nearing. Since moving to the Mid Coast region a few years ago, I made the pilgrimage to the homestead that started it all in Brooksville, Maine. Now maintained by young and energetic stewards, this place is a shrine to the folks who inspired the "Back to the Land" movement of the '70s. If you are in the area, you must make a visit.

As you travel up the coast of Maine toward Bar Harbor, before reaching Bucksport, you will be greated by the sight of the amazing new bridge accross the Penobscot Narrows.
