music: Breaktime: Songwriting and Other Mysteries - 05/28/08 04:45 AM
I'm not a songwriter, but I've always admired those who could combines words and music in a way that could grab me, cause an emotional response and create images and thoughts in my mind.
I have to admit that I was one who has thought that anybody can create a song and at one point even tried to write The Song myself.  However, it quickly became painfully evident that writing a song that will have lasting (or even fleeting) value to others is really, really difficult to do.    It requires talent and skill to take concepts and moments of inspiration and … (1 comments)

music: BreakTime: Top Trumpet Virtuosos During My Lifetime - 06/08/07 01:23 AM
A comment I made in a prior article about "Fly Me To The Moon" by Tony Bennett got me started on this subject as I jumped to my favorite trumpet version by Al Hirt and then it took off from there... Anyway, here are resource links to information about the trumpet and some of the best and most popular virtuoso trumpet players I experienced via recordings during my lifetime. My opinion isn't worth much, but below are my selections for the best, most popular North American virtuoso trumpeters of the later half of the 20th Century and first part of the 21st Century...in order of … (0 comments)

music: BreakTime: Tony Bennett - The Best Is Yet To Come - 06/07/07 04:52 AM
My oldest daughter, knowing that I wanted to hear and see Tony Bennett perform live, gave me a combination Christmas, Birthday and Father's Day present and took me to see him in concert at Wolf Trap, Vienna, VA the other day.  The concert is part of his "The Best Is Yet To Come" tour sponsored in part by the AARP.   One of the many advantages of living in the South Jersey / Delaware Valley area is the ability to attend events and visit sights in the Washington - Baltimore - Philadelphia - New York metropolitan region, that can easily be done in … (1 comments)

music: BreakTime: Attending An Andre Rieu Concert and Other Events in Atlantic City. - 04/20/07 08:06 AM
Because of the broadcast of his international concerts on local PBS TV in the Delaware Valley, Andre Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra is fairly well known and popular in the region.  I must confess that while I was aware of this Dutch born violinist and his orchestra, I have never watched a complete show on TV or purchased any of his recordings.  However, this past weekend, I was given a set of free tickets to attend his concert at the Boardwalk Hall (the original Convention Hall) in Atlantic City, as the original ticket holders could not make it because of the … (0 comments)

music: Philly + New Year's Day = Mummers Parade - 12/31/06 12:06 PM
Everyone from the Philadelphia and the Delaware Valley area knows that New Year's Day is the time for the annual Philadelphia Mummers New Year's Day Parade. Mummers and the annual Mummers Parade are unique to Philadelphia.  I know of nothing like it anywhere else.  Their sight and sound are distinctive.  Adults in elaborate customes march and strut through Philadelphia streets, many while playing instruments, to entertain us and welcome in the new year.    It you can not be one of the hundreds of thousands that regularly make it into the city each year to watch the parade, you can catch it on local TV 17. In addition to local … (2 comments)

music: Atlantic City - Concerts and Other Entertainment - 12/31/06 10:08 AM
On advantage living in South Jersey is the access we have to major music and comedy concerts and entertainment in Atlantic City.  Often, you may have several choices in a week or even several on the same day.  This goes on all year long. For example, my son and I decided to attend the recent Trans-Siberian Orchestra concert at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall, formerly the original Convention Hall, that has been upgraded for modern performances. We had an easy drive down to Atlantic City (under an hour) and parked in one of the many high-rise parking facilities, in our case Caesar's.  … (0 comments)

music: The Pinelands, or Pine Barrens, of New Jersey - 11/05/06 02:52 AM
The beautiful and pristine New Jersey Pinelands area, also known as the Pine Barrens, is a region stretching from Brendan T. Byrne (formerly called Lebanon) State Forest to the Forked River Mountains area and out to Long Beach Island, Barnegat and Tuckerton along the shore.   It extends across eight New Jersey counties: Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Monmouth (outliers), and Ocean. Spreading across the most densely populated state in the country, the New Jersey Pine Barrens remains a dynamic patchwork of open space and rural living. Cranberry and blueberry farms thrive in the sandy soils once deemed useless by 17th- … (12 comments)

music: Delaware Valley - Concerts - 10/09/06 04:07 PM
The Delaware Valley has a large number of venues to see and hear music of all varieties.  For popular (non-Classical) music, the venues range in size from the Wachovia Center arena in Philadelphia ("Philly") and Tweeter Center in Camden (NJ) to the more intimate theaters, such as the Keswick Theater in Glenside (PA).  Classical music has its on set of world reknown centers (or click here) dedicated to that genre.  There are also community and school performing arts centers, such as the Lenape Regional Performing Arts Center in Marlton (NJ) that offers nationally and even internationally recognized artists (including singers, instrumentalists, musicals, plays and even comedians, such as Bill … (0 comments)
