Living in Retirement: Where to now?
Increasingly, I've been helping seniors downsize from their family home to a condo or townhouse. Some clients are excited and some are apprehensive, which is understandable. It's a new stage, a new beginning and certainly not the last chapter.  I wrote a little about my interpretation of an "in between" stage of life in a blog post, We Need to Come up With a Name for This New Stage in Life.  I imagine a simplified life where I have very little cleaning with a smaller home; surrounded by only the things I love because there's limited space; … (2 comments)

seniors: You Know What it Means to be a Senior in the 21st Century? Really? - 04/14/14 06:44 AM
Do you really know what it means to be a senior in the 21st Century?
I've been observing a huge transition in aging as compared to the example set when I was growing up. You can read a little about that in the January 10 blog I wrote, "We Need to Come up With a Name for This New Stage in Life."
I thought I saw it all until I saw this video of yet another new standard. I've seen video of seniors doing many various risky activities not usually associated with seniors but never like this:

I am utterly impressed, excited and a … (2 comments)

seniors: Seniors Can get 50% Rebate on the Municipal Property Taxes - 02/04/14 01:44 AM
In researching a municipal tax assessment for a client's house, I found a rather interesting tidbit I'm not certain most people may be aware of.
Access Nova Scotia on behalf of the Department of Community Services, designed a program to help eligible seniors remain in their homes, providing them with an annual rebate on their municipal property taxes.
The program provides eligible homeowners with a 50% rebate on the municipal property taxes paid the previous year, up to a maximum of $800.00/year.

Seniors are eligible to receive the rebate if they meet ALL of the following criteria:
Were receiving either the Guaranteed Income … (0 comments)

seniors: We Need to Come up With a Name for This New Stage in Life! - 01/10/14 12:12 AM
They say, 60 is the new 40 because medical advances and awareness are allowing people to live longer and healthier. When I was growing up, the term senior was always associated with a much older age similar to what we now see as 80 and older.  It was common for people to work until they were 65, and before long, they passed away because the average lifespan was 70.  So you see, the term senior really doesn't describe the age group 55-70 because people are healthy, vital and no where near ready for the previous generations version of retirement. Now, folks … (9 comments)

seniors: How Does One Go About Detaching Their Feelings From a Home of Memories - 12/17/13 03:04 AM
Downsizing has become a popular word; aging boomers are increasingly looking to lighten the load and sell the family home. They aren't like seniors of previous generations, deciding that it's okay to start a new chapter and not wait for the book to end.
Easy to say, downsizing, but it is a daunting task to sort through all the memories and figure out what can stay and what should go without hurting loved ones who gave gifts over the years. So where do you start?
I've worked with many seniors going through this transition and have suggestions that may seem simple … (3 comments)

seniors: The Senior Real Estate Specialist Designation - 12/03/10 12:46 PM
I am proud to announce that I've passed the exam to acquire my "Seniors Real Estate Specialist" designation. And in doing so, learned so much of the challenges the younger boomers face and how to better serve them and look out for their best interests.
It is my hope now to better serve a huge part of our community that have enormous challenges. The fact that I'm 44 makes me the perfect candidate to help a demographic sell to the often misunderstood younger generation and the culture they now live in.  I grew up with values in common with the older … (0 comments)

seniors: Seniors Deserve More! - 09/28/10 09:15 AM
I just returned from visiting with an elderly woman who recognizes that she needs to sell her property but hasn't yet because she is overwhelmed by the very thought of moving.  As we sat and talked for a couple of hours, I really got to know her and the challenges she faces every day.  I too would be overwhelmed... and frustrated for that matter.
She knew some of the basics in preparing a property for today's market expectations so she was packing a little at a time.  Her endeavors ended when she couldn't move the box once it was packed.  So there it sat, in … (7 comments)

seniors: It's the Most Amazing House That is TLA 3850 sq ft - All On One Floor!! - 01/30/10 11:48 PM
I am working at an open house today on Bisset Road in Dartmouth.  View property.  It's the most amazing house that is TLA 3850 sq ft - all on one floor!!  It's the first time I've seen a house that would be suitable for both families or seniors, two target markets not usually to mix.  If you have the opportunity to come out and visit between 2-4pm, I'd love to take you on a tour.
