Ogden Elementary Food Drive to benefit Wilmington Food Bank November 8 ~ 18, 2010 - 10/29/10 02:14 PM
Ogden Elementary Food Drive
November 8 ~ 18, 2010
Wilmington, NC  28411

My granddaughters are excited to be participating in a Food Drive at their school, Ogden Elementary, in Wilmington, NC.  They are already hard at work collecting donations of non-perishable food items for the Wilmington Food Bank.  Their goal?  To have 1 box full on the first day of the Food Drive.
The need is great, and our neighbors need our help.  Your donation can help a child do better in school because of a full tummy, or an elderly person have 3 meals AND their medications!  So … (17 comments)

Paying it Forward at the pump - 10/28/10 06:30 AM
This week has been full of opportunities to Pay it Forward and do something for someone else with no expectation of anything in return.  And I took advantage of every one I could find!
My favorite?  Monday, while gassing up the car, Cheeky Assistant took notice of a car 2 pumps over.  She's very observant and she noticed that the young woman with 2 small children in the back seat of her car (which looked to be on it's last legs), was looking for something under all the seats and in her purse.  CA watched for a minute and realized the young lady was trying … (48 comments)

Daily challenges - 10/26/10 07:48 PM

Smiling commercials on television would have you believe that obtaining vehicular insurance is a swimmingly easy procedure. It may well be so for most: not so for me, as I seem to bring out life's challenges at every turn. I don't need no stinkin' REALTOR®! I can sell my house myself! - 10/26/10 06:15 PM
"I don't need no stinkin' REALTOR®!  I can sell my house myself!"
Look, I get that times are tough, and saving money wherever we can is important to everyone.  But selling your house really isn't the place to cut corners and hope for the best.
I am perfectly aware that selling a house isn't brain surgery.  But there are skills and training needed to do it well.  I mean, I can change the oil in my car, but not as efficiently or cost effectively as my mechanic.  That's why I pay him to do it.  Not because I can't, but … (69 comments)

Paying it Forward in Wrightsville Beach, NC - 10/21/10 06:43 PM
I've been looking for my opportunity to Pay it Forward this week.  Usually the opportunities are many, but for some reason this week has been a little different.  I have been busier than in the recent past, so maybe I'm just not as open to seeing the chances to Pay it Forward life presents.
But wouldn't you know, just when I was least expecting it, my opportunity presented itself.  My daughter asked me to drop some books off at the library yesterday.  I forgot.  So I made a stop on my way to the office this morning at "oh my gosh, it's early".

Ever have one of those days? Of course you have, you're on ActiveRain! - 10/20/10 08:25 PM
After the slightly traumatizing day I had yesterday, I was somewhat trepidatious as I left for the office this morning.  Seems everything is just a little, off, for some reason.  Nothing's really wrong, it's just, off.  And I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Well, it dropped.  At about 3pm EST.
Look what was delivered to my office from my friend, Fozzie.  Who is Fozzie?  Only the greatest bear to ever live!

I'm going to wait for the market to hit bottom before I buy. - 10/20/10 02:21 PM
"I'm going to wait for the market to hit bottom before I buy."
Are you now?  And when exactly will that be?  Are you the one who hijacked my crystal ball?  Hope that thing's working better for you than it did for me.
How will you know when the market has hit bottom?  Will there be a memo sent out to let us all know it's on a certain date?  Who is going to let you know?  Will your Uncle Cecil's wife's, brother's, cousin-in-law's, niece's friend tell you?

Do you have the right attitude to sell your house? - 10/18/10 03:30 PM
Do you have the right attitude to sell your house?
It's great that you're pricing it right, taking care of repairs, staging the house, planting a few flowers or just cleaning out the garage.  Those are all important.
But so is your ATTITUDE.  Sellers not only need to do the physical labor to get their homes ready, they need to do the mental as well.
Are you ready to keep the home in showing condition?  This means looking at it EVERY day with the eyes of a buyer.  You'll have things that you don't feel like doing or dealing with, but if … (27 comments)

There's flotsam in my sink! Help! - 10/18/10 11:09 AM
My garbage disposal has stopped working.  I can hear a slight "whirr", but nothing is moving and my sink is full of water and, well, it looks like flotsam.  Not a pretty sight.  I've pushed the re-set button and tried using an allen wrench, but it's not doing anything.
So, I call my daughter, she worked for a plumber years ago, maybe she's got a solution.
"There's flotsam in my sink!  Help!"
"Use the 'key', Mom."
"The 'key'?"
"Yeah.  It looks like an allen wrench on steroids.  Isn't there one taped to the bottom of the disposal?"
"No.  And I tried … (23 comments)

How can I get the most money for my house? - 10/17/10 08:42 AM
I was recently asked, "How can I get the most money for my house?"   Now, this is not a new question for REALTORS® and frankly, the answer is not a new one either.  "Curb Appeal, Staging and PRICING IT RIGHT!"   Not the "magic potion" this Seller was hoping for.  Seems Sellers want to do less work and still over-price their homes.  Not sure why anyone thinks this will work in today's market, but the truth is, I hope they like living in that home.  Because if they don't get smart about today's market and what they need to do to sell their home, … (132 comments)

Adventures in Real Estate with Tish & Cheeky Assistant - 10/12/10 04:26 PM
Cheeky Assistant & I were reminiscing today about some of our Real Estate Adventures.  I was having a great time remembering some GREAT Clients and FANTASTIC homes.  It was a lovely trip down memory lane.
Then, CA reminded me of this one.  Surely she could find someone else to harass.  Any takers?  Roger?  Bill?  Liz?  Charita?  Melissa?  Richie?  Steve?  Anyone?
I was working with a delightful couple on the purchase of an oceanblock lot and the building of their dream home.  We'd been back and forth through the mail and phone calls and they had finally come down to take a look.  Turned out … (41 comments)

Selling your Wrightsville Beach house AND doing some good along the way! - 10/11/10 05:23 AM
I know you've heard it ad nauseum, but it's so important you need to be reminded again.

De-clutter and de-personalize your home
before you put it on the market!

Buyers need to visualize themselves in your home.  They need to be able to imagine making their own memories inside those 4 walls.  And the majority of them cannot do this with all of your "stuff" in the way.
I know, that "stuff" is important to you.  I get that.  But I am assuming that selling your house is important to you as well, so you're going to have to get over … (30 comments)

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. LET'S DO WHAT WE CAN, WHEN WE CAN, WHERE WE CAN - 10/10/10 11:35 AM
I was raised, and raised my children, with the credo "Charity begins at home."  For my family, HOME is not just the 4 walls with an address, where we sleep -- It's our entire community.  Even if they live 20 miles from our house, if they are in our vicinity, they are our neighbors and a part of our "home".  I don't have to know your name, I just have to know that you live in my community; that alone makes you a part of my definition of "home".
Like many communities today, my community of New Hanover County, NC has been hit by the poor … (70 comments)

How many times has this happened to you?  You tell someone something and they just assume that you meant something else entirely -- then they act, or don't act, accordingly?  Or they somehow draw a different conclusion than you intended?
