Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) - 08/25/07 10:00 AM
Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC), located just northeast of Summit, MS, began in 1918 as Pike County Agricultural High School, and included a dairy, beef, and row crop farm.  The agricultural high school offered college work for the first time in 1929, and in 1932 it became a two-year junior college.  1988, the name changed from Southwest Mississippi Junior College to Southwest Mississippi Community College, to reflect the broadened mission and scope of its offerings.

Pike County Speedway Events - 08/23/07 10:06 PM

Percy Quin State Park, Pike County, MS - 08/21/07 07:10 AM
Percy Quin State Park in Pike County, Mississippi, is a beautiful 1700-acre park of rolling hills filled with loblolly pines and magnolia trees.  The park was originally constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and is named after a former U.S. representative from Mississippi.   The Tangipahoa River empties into the lake.
There is a visitor's center with a game room and nearby large picnic sheds and a large playground.  There is even a convention center for hosting large group activities.

Yesterday morning I participated in the quarterly Adopt-a-Highway cleanup of the Kiwanis Club of Pike County, Mississippi.  We have a two-mile stretch of road between McComb and Summit.  It struck me as we were working how much more of a community one can notice and appreciate when one is on foot! I noticed several houses I had never really paid any attention to before, even though I've driven through there hundreds of times.  I also noticed new commercial clearing of land I probably wouldn't have thought about as much if I had been driving by.  Our walk encouraged me to get … (2 comments)

Last night my daughter had a "pajama cookout" at our house.  Fifteen cheerleaders came and ate hamburgers and watched a horror movie.  Needless to say, I didn't make my usual 9 PM bedtime! But it was a lot of fun, and I got some good compliments on my hamburgers.  Here is how I made them:
To each pound of ground chuck (about 20% fat) , add one raw egg, Italian bread crumbs,  Worcestershire sauce (you can add ketchup, too), garlic powder, salt, and pepper.  I didn't measure any ingredients-just make it to your taste.  I use disposable gloves to mash it all … (1 comments)

Although subprime mortgage troubles are affecting all borrowers, people with not so good credit will undergo the toughest underwriting.

Last Friday and Sat. I went to the district Kiwanis convention in New Orleans.  I met a lot of people and learned a great deal.  I'm looking forward to a good year of growth and service in our club.  The Kiwanis motto is "Serving the Children of the World."  Any fellow Kiwanians out there-or anyone interested in becoming one?  I'd love to hear from you.
