Katie Swinney, Donor Recruitment Representative for United Blood Services, spoke recently to the Kiwanis Club of Pike County about the community blood program in Pike County and the impact blood donation has on people's lives. Katie Swinney with Kiwanis Club of Pike County President Shelton Davis Swinney began by explaining the local community blood program. "United Blood Services is the sole provider of blood for Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center; we also provide 100% of the blood for Walthall County, Field Memorial, and Beacham Memorial, and we supply blood to seventy other hospitals throughout the state of Mississippi, western Alabama, and Louisiana. Coach Sam West, the new athletic director at McComb High School, spoke recently to the Kiwanis Club of Pike County. He recognized several similarities between Kiwanis and his own mission. "Being the athletic director at McComb High School, I live and die for one thing: I want to help children and adults alike have extraordinary, life-changing moments." One of the things begun at MHS this year is a scholar athletes program. "Every student who has a 3.0 GPA or higher from last year, we're going to have a big pizza party for them. he Mayor's Youth Council (Mayor Zach Patterson, McComb, Mississippi) has been actively involved in strengthening our community since its inception in April of 2008. The thirteen young people on the council represent all the area high schools. They have been developing their leadership skills through formal training and a number of volunteer community service projects, and they have a developing slate of events scheduled for the rest of the year.
Training for McComb's youth council members began with the first annual MML (Mississippi Municipal League) Statewide Youth Leadership Summit in Hattiesburg on May 1, 2008. Members also attended the 77th (0 comments)

There is a wonderful collection of postcards created by Forrest Lamar Cooper from 1892 to 1927 available for viewing at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History website. Many of the photos depict scenes from McComb, including several images of downtown McComb, stately residences, the railroad, the J.J. White lumber company, the cotton mills, city hospital, banks, churches, schools, the post office, city hall, and even Teddy Roosevelt's visit to McComb. Masey’s Jewelers celebrated its Grand Opening on July 25, 2008, at the corner of Robb Street and Highway 51 in Summit. The store opened on June 2, 2008, in its new location after having been in Southwest Mall in McComb for three years. Jeff Coon is owner/jeweler/watchmaker, and his mother-in-law Sharon Mizell is owner/manager. Jeff is a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) graduate in diamonds, and he is working towards his Graduate Gemologist diploma in gemstones. The new cardio room. Come to the recently renovated Body Shop gym to get a new lease on life! Gena Thompson of McComb recently purchased the McComb Fitness Center and renamed it The Body Shop. Located at 1308 Aston Avenue, the gym re-opened on July 14 after ten days of preparation.
To prepare for the re-opening, Thompson and her crew remodeled extensively. They stripped out all the carpet from the aerobics room and laid down all new wood laminate flooring, painted the walls in bright colors throughout the facility, stripped and repainted the steam room, placed healthy plants all (4 comments)
On Thursday, August 21, 2008, a groundbreaking ceremony was held at McComb Sports Park for the new wastewater treatment facility for the City of McComb City, Mississippi. After a welcome by Tasha Dillon, Director of the McComb Community Relations and Tourism Bureau, and an invocation by Reverend Jim Dalton of the First Assembly of God, citizens heard from executives from Neel-Schaffer (the planning and engineering firm behind the project), the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, and Honorable Mayor Zachary Patterson.

Camp Sunshine 2008 at Percy Quin State Park July 9-13 was a great success! Grease was this year’s theme for the five-day camp for mentally and physically handicapped children and adults. Some of the theme-related highlights this year were a “drive-in movie” held on the park’s activity field, a dance-off contest with trophies awarded, and a special performance of songs from the movie Grease by guest musicians. 116 Clique on stage at the McComb Event and Entertainment Center McComb got a real treat Wednesday, July 9, 2008, when the highly acclaimed Christian rap group 116 Clique performed at the McComb Event and Entertainment Center as part of their Unashamed ’08 tour. The group is comprised of musicians Lecrae, Trip Lee, Tedashii, and Sho Baraka. Church vans and busses brought teenagers from all over to listen to the inspiring music and message. One group even drove down from Jackson to see the big-name acts and hear the testimonies. There were also several adults in the audience enjoying the concert (4 comments)

This book documents many early families of Pike County, MS, as well as Confederate soldiers going out from Pike and surrounding counties, with over 400 surnames. McComb, Mississippi, recently was featured in Effect magazine as an ideal retirement community. McComb is one of only a few towns certified by the American Association of Retirement Communities. To become certified, towns must meet qualifications in terms of housing, safety, civic pride, shopping, educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities, and availability of hospital and medical care. Celestine, Jr. On Memorial Day 2008 (Monday, May 26), the staff at Lake Luvarn hosted an event in commemoration of those military men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, including area soldiers recently fallen in the line of duty. Percy Quin State Park south of McComb is one of five Mississippi state parks listed among ReserveAmerica's Top 100 Family Campgrounds. Around four thousand state parks, national parks, and campgrounds in all fifty states were reviewed before the top 100 were named. The other winning Mississippi state parks are John W. Kyle State Park near Sardis, Lake Lincoln State Park near Wesson, Paul B. Johnson State Park near Hattiesburg, and Trace State Park near Belden.

Then come on down to the McComb Depot Pavilion any Friday in May or October at noon to have lunch and listen to the sweet sounds of the Pat Cornacchione Band! For three or four years now the band has played downtown to the delight of its listeners. Although sometimes dubbed a "jazz combo," the band is quite versatile in its offerings. On Saturday, April 5, 2008, a couple of hundred people gathered at the McComb Depot Pavilion to honor those who served on the Illinois Central Railroad. The master of ceremonies was Larry Carruth. McComb Mayor Zachary Patterson welcomed the crowd, and prayer was led by retired porter the Reverend Leon Moore.
