Ponce de Leon Inlet Sail & Power Squadron is a non-profit unit of District 23 (see jurisdiction map) under the United States Power Squadrons®; and, is located on the East Atlantic Coast in Southeast Volusia County Florida.  Centered in the Port Orange, New Smyrna Beach/Edgewater-Oak Hill area, our goal is to promote safe boating on our waters and to ensure everybody is equipped with the knowledge needed to make responsible decisions behind the helm.  We achieve these goals by offering educational courses, classes, instruction, and fellowship that teach community and member boaters the essentials as well as the most advanced aspects needed.  Along with offering classes to the public, the Squadron also plans activities designed to bring together the community and enjoy our waterways.  Ponce de Leon Inlet Sail & Power Squadron extends a welcome to everybody willing to enjoy boating to its fullest extent.

District 23 is one of the 33 Districts which make up the United States Power Squadrons®, the world's largest non-profit, family oriented, recreational boating organization devoted to safe boating through education.  Our National Organization has more than 40,000 enthusiastic members throughout the United States and Puerto Rico who provide public boating education courses to all current and prospective boaters.  Districts are made up of local squadrons in their regional areas.  District 23 is composed of eleven squadrons located in Northeastern and Central Florida, with a total membership of about 1,200 members.  USPS squadrons, as part of their civic services, conduct boating courses for the general public.  In this regard, all eleven squadrons of District 23 hold Boat Smart® or the Squadron Boating Course® for the public throughout the year.  These classes are designed to instruct recreational boaters in safe boat handling, and are approved by and meet certification requirements of all fifty states of the United States.  To meet the needs of those who would like to take a safe boating course but cannot attend scheduled classes, USPS offers America's Boating Course®;  this course allows the public to receive instruction using a compact disk with their personal computer and a detailed instruction book.  Completion of the course requires the participant take a closed book proctored examination administered by a local USPS squadron.  All eleven squadrons of District 23 participate in America's Boating Course®. If you are interested in taking a safe boating course, call this toll free number for information on when and where the next Boat Smart® or the Squadron Boating Course® starts at a squadron near you, or get the details:

The Sugar Mill community...Sugar Mill is a unique community. We are inside the city limits of New Smyrna Beach, ensuring that we have city fire and police services. However, we're tucked away in a corner of the city that is still mostly rural. Most importantly, Sugar Mill is an established community. What you see is what you get; there will be no developer surprises. The architectural review committee of the Sugar Mill Association insures that any construction that is done meets our standards. Resale's of existing homes are available. In addition to the City police services, we have our own Security Service staffing  the East gate entrance 24/7, the West gate entrance is limited to residents displaying a bar-coded sticker, as well as providing a roving patrol. A large portion of our Community maintain a second home elsewhere, but approximately 50% are full time residents. Included within Sugar Mill are several sub-communities of varying home size and amenities.  Pine Valley is a Condo complex of golf townhomes, each with its own golf cart garage and connected by golf cart paths to the rest of the complex.  The Brae Burn Golf Villas are slightly larger detached homes, but have the same connection with each other and the remainder of Sugar Mill by extensive cart paths.  The homes of the St. Andrews complex are still larger yet, but clustered in a beautifully landscaped oval tucked into the golf course. Each of these areas has its own community pool. The homes of the Meadows complex are the largest of the several sub-communities.  Several of these approach 3500 square feet.  Landscape maintenance service is another feature of each of these areas. A newer sub-community is the Woodlands at Sugar Mill. This area currently includes 21 lots, some on the golf course, which are sold-out with new custom upscale homes completed or under construction.

The remainder of the community consists of custom built single-family homes; including an area of upscale homes, tucked into the golf course, known as the Island. There are no two alike. A large number of these homes enjoy a private swimming pool, but the Club's large, heated pool is always available to club members. Landscape maintenance contractors are plentiful and relatively inexpensive. All of the custom homes are but a short drive away from the extensive golf cart trail system, so many members do without a second car and allow the golf cart to serve within the community.

KB Home, one of the nation's largest homebuilders, is developing two new communities just outside of Sugar Mill's current parameter. Isles of Sugar Mill and Landings at Sugar Mill (townhomes) are in the construction phase, with units occupied, on Sugar Mill Drive near the intersection of Pioneer Trail. Each have different entrances and community amenities not associated with Sugar Mill Country Club & Estates.

 

The city P&Z meets Monday night June 2nd. The old proposal to down-zone B4 ocean commercial properties to limit building height to 4 stories, down from 9, has developed legs and is walking again. B4 district allows condos, hotels, motels, restaurants and real estate offices. Reducing oceanfront building heights, a "vision" of some city fathers to preserve the beaches, has been a controversial topic for some time. It has been sent back to P&Z staff several times in the past but seems to get new legs from time-to-time and walk out of the blue. Down-zoning without compensation is seen by many as a taking of personal property rights rights.
