When hiring a local company to do work on your home, be sure to verify that the company has proper insurance coverage to handle any problems that may occur during the repairs and improvements done by the contractors. Many will assume that if the contractor is licensed with the State of California than they must have insurance. That is not exactly true. The licensing Board will require Bond Insurance and workers compensation insurance if the company have employees. There are not any Liability Insurance requirements required to maintain a general contractor's license or (71 comments)
Over the holiday weekend, there was a small apartment fire in a Cameron Park apartment community. Luckily the tenants had insurance and quickly contacted there insurance company for help. That was just the beginning of the apartment repair. The fire was small; it started on the stove and ruined the stove and microwave oven. Apparently it was a grease fire that burned for a while until the fire department and staff could get to it. The cabinets, counters and flooring can all be saved, but the smoke carried throughout the unit. This (32 comments)
There are many factors that go into the selection of a general contractor for your home improvement project in California. At or near the top of the list is:
Is your contractor licensed in the State of California? Is the contractor the proper bond for his work? Does your contractor carry Commercial General Liability Insurance?
This last one can play an important role in your decision to enter into a contract for improvements to your home. Knowing a little bit more about this may help in making that decision.
Contractors are not required to carry Commercial General (14 comments)
Will my dry rot damage repair be covered under my homeowners’ insurance policy?
In Sacramento, we see dry rot repairs that can be very costly to bring back to its original integrity. It doesn’t mean that, as general contractors, we overcharge to do these dry rot repairs, it just take some time to get to and repair the rotted wood. Not all of the repairs are surface trim boards that we do can be easily reached. The repair calls that we get usually are inside walls, floors roofs and other hidden areas. Many homeowners choose to ignore areas (13 comments)
My inexpensive bathroom renovation in Sacramento was destroyed!
I posted about an inexpensive renovation of a bathroom in Sacramento in December. Updating your current bathroom does not have to cost a lot, and it can be done quickly too. Having these improvements done to your home doesn’t guarantee that it will last forever.
Here is an example. After completing the inexpensive bathroom, the homeowner has had nothing but good things to say about it. He is telling his friends and neighbors and I may be getting new jobs from the referrals. He called me recently to tell me (20 comments)
Yes, we are insured and can prove it. Certificates of Insurance are available upon request.
Whenever you are considering entering into a contract for work on your property, verifying that the contractor has insurance is very important. Verify that the contractor is covered by two kinds of insurance.
General Liability Insurance and Workers’ Compensation Insurance Protects You!
General Liability Insurance covers damage the contractor may cause to your property. Workers Compensation Insurance covers the contractor’s employee injuries while working at your property. Without either of these insurance coverages, you may be financially responsible for any accidents (14 comments)
Top Ten Tips for Hiring a Contractor: 1.Hire only state-licensed contractors 2.Check a contractor’s license number online at www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 800.321.CSLB (2752). 3.Get at least three bids. 4.Get three references from each bidder and review past work in person. 5.Make sure all project expectations are in writing and only sign the contract if you completely understand the terms. 6.Confirm that the contractor has workers’ compensation insurance for employees. 7.Never pay more than 10% down or $1,000, whichever is less. Don’t pay in cash.
8.Don’t let payments get ahead of the work. 9.Keep a job file of all (31 comments)
I have been a long term member of CSAA (California State Automobile Association), AAA in many parts of the country. My 30 year experience is that CSAA is a stellar insurance company for auto and home owners insurance. They offer many other products but I’m focusing on the insurance side right now. Apparently, there is a class action law suit against the insurance company. I receive a notice in the form of a postcard size mailer informing me that if I wanted to be included, fill this out and (5 comments)
I would love to fix your problem that you are having but shouldn’t you be contacting the contractor that did the work? He was having some work done in his kitchen. He didn’t like the way it turned out, and would like me to fix it for him. I’m flattered but why isn’t he calling the contractor who he is working with on the kitchen project. The answer to this is a mystery to me, but I can think of several scenarios.
I’m not real sure who is to blame in these situations. It’s always easy to point the (7 comments)
