Hawks nesting behind my home!

This beautiful red-tailed hawk is one of a pair nesting behind my home in Oro Valley. Every morning they eat their kill in the tree behind my home, and are nesting very close by. Just outside the photo on the left was what was left of the mouse they were sharing. They call to each other constantly, and when I walk on the trail in the mornings I occasionally get "buzzed" by them. I love it! I can't wait to see the babies!

New Greyhound - This One's a Keeper!

This is Kayce, my new greyhound. I fell in love with her a couple of weeks ago at the rescue kennel where I volunteer. After crying for two days after my last foster dog got adopted, I didn't mess around this time and adopted her right away. She's 3 1/2 years old, and just retired in February.

Her racing name was Kay Celebration (that's where I got "Kayce" from), and she had lots of wins. Good thing, because she doesn't have any injuries like so many greyhounds do. She adjusted to the life of a pet immediately - no housebreaking issues or separation anxiety at all - but don't put her in a crate - she hates it! Most greys love it because that is where they have spent most of their lives and they feel secure inside, but not Kayce. She says that she has spent 3 1/2 years in one and she's done now, thank you very much!

In addition to playing catch with herself and going for walks, her other favorite activity is stealing my laundry and dragging it around the house. She doesn't chew on anything, just moves it around to where she likes it; a bra in the dining room, a sock in the kitchen...

Arizona Distance Classic

I managed to complete the Arizona Distance Classic Half Marathonthis morning. Considering everything else going on in my life - just showing up was an accomplishment. I walked it again this year. My IT band seems to be OK now, but I didn't want to risk an injury. The weird thing was that I didn't change my diet for this race this year. No carbs! At all! No pasta last night, no bagel this morning. And I improved my pace by 20 seconds per mile. I maintained a 13:30 pace through all the hills. It was a beautiful morning, and it was lots of fun (as always)! Of course, now I feel like my butt is going to fall off, but that's another story!

I'm no where near the front of the pack - don't bother looking for me!

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON GASOLINE

My neighbor gave me several tips on saving money on gasoline. I don't know about you, but when the price per gallon goes over $3.00, I just want to stay home! Anyway, she got these tips from someone that worked at Kinder Morgan.

Buy gasoline early in the morning. The storage tanks are underground, and gasoline expands as it gets warmer. So colder gasoline is more dense, meaning that you actually get a little more per gallon.
Pump the gasoline slowly. Use the first notch on the nozzle instead of the third. When you pump fast, you create more vapors, which are drawn back down into the storage tank. Again a little less gas in each gallon.
Fill your tank when it is half full. Gasoline evaporates very quickly, so the less gas in the tank, the more space there is for evaporation.
Don't buy gas when the truck is filling up the storage tanks. Filling the tanks stirs up any debris that might be in the bottom of the tank, and you have a much better chance of pumping dirt right into your tank.

CNN did a piece this morning about the best and worst Valentine's Day gifts, which got me thinking...

Many years ago my longtime live-in boyfriend gave me a large thermos for Valentine's Day. It was very romantic - NOT! It wasn't long after that our relationship ended! This was one of the worst gift I ever received...

Natural Gas Leak Causes Oro Valley Evacuation

A natural gas leak caused the evacuation of at least 27 homes in Rancho Vistoso last night. The Oro Valley Police Department asked people to clear out of the Sunset Ridge subdivision off of Pioneer Way. Families gathered at Painted Sky Elementary School until they could find hotel rooms or other accommodations. Natural Gas is highly flammable, and there was a definite explosion risk. Although inconvenienced, most residents are back home this morning. One of the evacuees was quoted as saying "it's better than getting blown up in your house".

Giselle found her Forever Home

In about an hour I will be giving Giselle to her new adoptive family. I havn't stopped crying since I found out on Friday. And for the first time she was on the floor next to me when I woke up this morning. She usually hangs out in the closet...

I knew I would get attached, but I had no idea it would be this hard to give up my foster baby! She is just starting to come out of her shell. I feel cheated! I told the adoption coordinator that I would adopt her myself if she doesn't do well in her new home. She will have another Greyhound to play with and I'm sure she will do just fine. I'm not so sure about me though. I'm going to be quite the wreck at my open house this afternoon!

You may already be aware of this scam, but it never hurts to spread the word around!

There is a mailing being sent out by fastdeeds.com trying to sell you a certified deed to your home to keep with your other important documents. They will be happy to sell you a copy for about $90.00.

Yes, it's a good idea to have a copy, but you can get one from Pima County Re

cords for $1.00 per page, or you can call your escrow officer - many will give you a copy for free.

Road Construction Starts Today in Oro Valley

Road Construction starts today at La Canada and Tangerine.

Workers will be on the road from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. La Canada Drive will be widened to 4 lanes south of Tangerine Road. There will be messages posted on electronic message boards for traffic delays and restrictions. As always in Oro Valley, the fines for speeding in a construction zone are doubled, and Oro Valley's finest keeps a pretty good eye on the traffic, so be sure to slow down and save yourself the ticket!

Notice the sign says "ROAD WIDENINN" - I guess they don't have spell check for road signs!

The YEAR LONG project will include the following;

drainage control,
sidewalks
multi-use paths.

"Multi-use" paths are what most of us call bike lanes, but yes, they are for multi-purpose use, such as runners, walkers, etc. Did you know that there is less impact on your knees if you walk or run on asphalt as opposed to concrete sidewalks? Next time you see a runner in the multi-use path instead of on the sidewalk right next to him, you will know that he is just protecting his knees!
