Social MediaI like to compare social media marketing to one big party and recently my friend Perry Belcher gave a great example on this very topic.

Here are the' 7 Steps to Become Social in Social Media'

1) Pick a Party to Join

There are 3,000 social media parties (social sites) all over the Internet with over 700 million people partying (socializing) everyday and it's up to you to decide which party you want to attend. It's always best to go to the parties where you'll be able to meet people who share similar interests with you and you're business.

Now let's be honest how many parties do you think you can attend on a regular basis?

In social media most people can manage 3-4 parties so don't go crazy and think you have to be a party animal like Perry and attend 20. Once you decide what parties you want to attend on a regular basis then you're ready for the next step. First, check out this party directory and decide where you want to party.

2) Make sure you RSVP

Once you decide what parties you want to attend now you need to RSVP. In other words register yourself with these sites. Now I know there may be some of you that are party animals so you can always reserve your spot at all of the A-list parties too.

3) Dress to kill

When you go to a party you dress at your best right? Same thing applies when you attend a social media party. Now when I mean dress to kill I'm really referring to dressing your social profiles so they make a great impression when you come to the party (social site). Add a nice, clear, and friendly picture and be sure to complete your profile information entirely.

4) Show Up

Simply finding a party and sending out your RSVP and then dressing to kill is one thing but it all means nothing unless you show up to the party! You show up by sending tweets, posting updates, making comments, sharing links, @replies, retweets, or wall posts.

5) Bring some goodies

It's customary to bring chips, snacks, or some goodies with you when you come to a party. When it comes to social media you bring value. Value can come in all sorts of ways from personal value, professional value, or promotional value.

6) Be the Light of the Party

Don't drink too much, behave all crazy or start fights in other people's parties. You might not be invited to the next party ever again.

OK, I know that doesn't apply to social media but being offensive, mean spirited, or downright rude will make others run in the other direction. Be fun, encourage others, engage in conversations, and most importantly socialize. If you go to a party and just walk around and never talk with anyone how can you expect to make any meaningful connections. Remember a connection leads to a conversation but it's up to you to participate.

7) Don't Leave Early

Don't be the first one to leave the party. In social media this means to be the last one to leave the conversation. When you post an update or tweet and someone @replies you or makes a comment it's important to respond or acknowledge the person who is engaging in a conversation with you. Don't leave them hanging! It's like meeting someone at a party and they ask you a question and you walk away without saying anything.

Social media marketing is all about making connections with others on a personal and professional level and this is accomplished though various means of social media outlets. Until you treat social media like one big party and begin to dress to kill, show up to party, bring some goodies, and be the light of the party you will end up missing out on what social media marketing can really do for you and your business.

What are some of the ways you're making connections on a personal, professional, or promotional level?

Remember - To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. ~ Anthony Robbins

Social Media StrategyMy inspiration for this post comes from LT. Commander Jon Cannon of the Navy Seals. There's a lot that we can learn from the highest-performing organization on the planet. For nearly half a century this organization has been creating strong, effective leaders who excel at developing amazing teams and delivering extraordinary results.

The secret ingredient is that every member of this organization is a leader/teacher, engaged in continuous, interactive teaching and learning.

Who is this organization?

They are the Navy SEALS.

While I can't possibly cover all the leadership lessons of the SEAL organization in a single post I hope to share just a few of my favorites. Some of these lessons and principles of the SEALS can transform your Social Media Marketing efforts to a whole new level. To use these lessons successfully, you must apply what fits. So after you're done reading this post put some of the lessons you've learned into action.

Here are the '3 Lessons that you can learn from the Navy Seals'

Lesson 1

The Mission

When SEAL Platoons plan a mission, their flowcharts look like upside-down family trees: The mission starts out as a strong, solid trunk, and then quickly begins to split and branch out with every contingency.

Your mission in social media marketing should always begin with a flowchart or blueprint or map that defines your goals, niche, target market and branches out with every social media outlet that will drive traffic to your blog or landing page or web site. Here's a detailed example http://tinyurl.com/38t75n

Lesson 2

Plan Ahead - Prepare for a New Situation that has not yet been Identified

SEALS can quickly adjust from desert warfare to jungle warfare, from urban environments to maritime environments, and from 35-man task units to 2-man sniper elements.

In social media marketing always prepare for new changes and improvements so that you can adjust to your new social environments. For example, Facebook® recently updated its platform leaving many lost and confused on how to adjust and adapt to the new changes. Plan ahead and be prepared by following and subscribing to the blogs of industry leaders in social media and your target niche. A popular tool for finding a top blog in your niche is http://technorati.com and a great site to follow for social media is http://www.mashable.com

Lesson 3

Ensure that You Possess the Three Primary Leadership Tools

Responsibility

A SEAL leader needs a mission and a SEAL platoon needs a mission

To have focus and direction in social media you should define your mission and share that mission with your team. Secondly, you define your niche and build your social network around that niche by providing personal, professional, and promotional value. Learn the 'Top 3 Ways to Become Invaluable to your Social Network.'

Authority

A SEAL leader needs the tools to complete his mission.

To fulfill your mission in social media you will need to arm yourself with the tools to get the job done. Here's a social media armory of 1000 Internet/Social Media tools.

Accountability

SEAL leaders have consequences when they do not perform at an acceptable level. Performance expectations are established and reinforced within the SEAL team organization.

Without accountability you end up performing your social media marketing using any method and following any code of conduct. Without accountability you'll lack the guidelines to stay the course. Alex Mandossian says it best in his recent post titled ‘New Equation of "Personalized" Accountability.'

Every post, article, video, audio, or book on social media, leadership and teamwork is useless unless you put some of what you've read into practice. You will make mistakes but don't be afraid. You will get better faster than you think!

Scared? You should be. But that's just your body's way of saying it's alive.

Now make it happen!

OohRah!

Remember - We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort. ~ Jesse Owens

Social Media SuperheroWatching the movie trailer for ‘Wolverine' coming out in theatres May 1st got me so excited that I felt like a kid again. I've always enjoyed reading the superhero comic books as a kid and now seeing my favorite characters come to life on the big screen is truly a fun and enjoyable experience.

I know I'm not alone with this superhero appreciation because movies like the ‘Dark Knight' ranked in over over $400 million and ‘Iron Man' with $100 million across the U.S.

So what's the fascination with superheroes?

Well, I believe that many of us can relate to the origin of one or many superheroes. Anyone who has ever been bullied could relate to Spider Man. Who has not wished to be Superman, a man above all other men? Or Jean Grey, the most powerful of the X-Men team.

OK, I know you're probably thinking what does this have to do with social media marketing.

Well, I believe that while we would all love to have the kind of super powers we see on the big screen we can in fact become a superhero in social media marketing.

Here's my personal definition of what I call a ‘Social Media Superhero.'

Social Media Superhero

Definition - a person having a distinctive identity, extraordinary or exceptional personal, professional and promotional skills, tools and strong moral code, including a willingness to provide service for the greater good without expectation of reward.

Here are ‘5 Ways to Be a Social Media Superhero'

Superman

Known as ‘The Man of Steel'

More powerful than a locomotive, faster than a speeding bullet and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. He hides his immortal powers beneath the persona of Clark Kent, a mild-mannered newspaper reporter.

To be a ‘Superman' in Social Media requires having a strong and powerful influence with your social network. With that ‘Power of Influence' a social media ‘superman' exercises great humility and appreciation for his/her influence. He also has a distinctive social "identity" and consistently sets out to do good deeds by way of providing ‘power value' in posts, tweets, links, articles, and tools.

An example of a ‘Superman' in social media is Chris Brogan or Michel Fortin who have very powerful social identities, influence with their social networks, and they both set out to provide ‘power value' on a consistent basis.

Tip - To increase your ‘Power Value' here's a resourceful site that encapsulates up-to-the-minute headlines from the most popular sites on the internet. http://popurls.com/

Batman

Known as a ‘Vigilante'

Unlike many superheroes, Batman has no superpowers and instead relies on ‘his own scientific knowledge, detective skills, and athletic prowess.' Batman utilizes a large arsenal of specialized gadgets in his war against crime, the designs of which usually share a bat motif.

To be a ‘Batman' in Social Media is all about having the knowledge of tools and gadgets to work your social media strategy. You pay attention to details and seek out or even invent ways to better your social media environment. You're an innovator and a creative thinker that is not afraid to pursue unchartered territory if you believe it will serve the greater good.

An example of a ‘Batman' in social media is Jack Humphrey or Doug Firebaugh who have extensive knowledge of the very best gadgets and tools in social media today. Jack has even created some powerful tools like Blog Talk Monitor with his innovative thinking.

Tip - For an excellent tools source to get things done smarter and more efficiently check out http://lifehacker.com/

Professor Xavier

Known as ‘Professor X'

Professor Charles Francis Xavier is the leader and founder of the X-Men. His body houses one of the world's most powerful mutant minds. As a high-level telepath, Xavier can read, control and influence human minds.

To be a ‘Professor X' in social media is not about controlling people's minds but instead it's having the ‘power of influence.' This power requires you to be a creative and innovative thinker that expresses thoughts, images, and ideas using social media outlets like blogs, notes, articles, podcasts, and videos. Your content is unique and you have original thinking that influences readers to think at greater levels than ever before. You help expand the mind power of others!

An example of a ‘Professor X' in social media is Seth Godin or Darren Rowse who constantly deliver a new and fresh way of thinking. Their insights and thought process leads you to think from different perspectives and viewpoints. Great minds of social media at work!

Tip - Mind mapping is a way of taking notes, capturing ideas, exploring concepts and breaking down information into a more readily understood format. Here's a free download at http://ow.ly/2qmv

Storm

Storm is an extremely powerful human mutant, and has demonstrated a plethora of abilities, most of which are the power to control the weather. Storm's physiology grants her total immunity to extreme weather conditions and has overcome physically stronger foes.

To be a ‘Storm' in social media requires the ability to master and perform exceptionally well in any and all kinds of social media environments like conference calls, interviews, webinars, events, and mastermind meetings. You have complete control over your personal brand and have successfully burst onto the social media scene like a hurricane by building a strong social network in a short period of time.

One of the best examples of a ‘Storm' in social media is Carrie Wilkerson who burst onto the social media scene and cultivated a powerful social network through her passion and love of people. She performs exceptionally in any environment and was recently awarded 'Top Underground Marketer of the Year' at Yanik Silver's Underground 5 event.

Tip - Read this free eBook from Brian Solis titled ‘The Essential Guide to Social Media' at http://ow.ly/2qy5

Spider-Man

Spider-Man has a total of four powers, Spider-Strength, Spider-Speed, Spider-Grip, and Spider-Sense. The combination of these amazing abilities, as well as all of his equipment make him one of the most powerful, dynamic, and undefeatable heroes of all time.

To be ‘Spider-Man' in social media requires the ability to have stickiness to your message and brand. The better you craft your message the better it will stick in the minds of your social network. You also have a good grip on what your social network prefers to receive from you and a keen sense of what I call social awareness.

An example of a ‘Spider-Man' in social media is Carrie Wilkerson also known as the ‘Barefoot Executive' or Yanik Silver known for ‘Maverick Business Adventures' or Mari Smith known for being a ‘ Social Marketing Business Coach'.

Tip - 100 Personal Branding Tactics Using Social Media at http://ow.ly/2qx7

These are prime examples of social media superheroes that we can all learn from!

Now there are many social media superheroes out there that have yet to be discovered and are secretly increasing their social powers.

Are you one of them?

Social Media MagicI've always enjoyed magic tricks that created those moments of amazement, excitement, and wonder during my childhood years. Even today as an adult I still enjoy watching David Copperfield, Criss Angel, and David Blaine. These guys go to the extreme in order to capture and bewilder our minds leaving us with sheer disbelief of what just took place.

You can probably think of few times that you were thinking ‘How did they do that?'

Now, you're probably wondering what does this have to do with social media marketing right.

Well, I had to give a positive plug to the magicians of the world before I unveil some of the not so great magic tricks in social media marketing.

Fair enough?

Great!

Now, let me be the first to say that I'm not an expert in social media marketing nor will I ever claim to be. What I'm sharing with you is my personal opinion and what I truly believe can help you avoid what I call ‘Social Media Magic Tricks' that can possibly hurt your social media marketing efforts on a personal, professional, and promotional level.

So let's get started shall we?

Here are the ‘Top 5 Social Media Magic Tricks to Avoid'

1) The Vanishing Act

In this trick a magician makes something disappear-a coin, a cage of doves, milk from a newspaper, an assistant from a cabinet, or even the Statue of Liberty.

In social media marketing the thing that disappears in this trick is YOU! This trick basically happens when you are sending out a barrage of tweets, links, posts, and updates in short bursts of time and all of a sudden. ..

Poof!

You disappear for a week or two never to be heard of or seen again. Then all of a sudden you appear again and start the process all over again. The Vanishing act does not work and can cause you to lose friends and followers. The key is consistency and more importantly a steady flow of communication not five tweets or five links sent out all at the same time.

2) The Illusion

In this trick a magician creates an optical illusion, which makes the audience think that he has created a new quarter from two quarters. Illusion is the condition of being deceived by a false perception or belief.

Now in social media marketing this trick is when either personal or professional illusions are created in order to advance ones gain in the social media landscape. You've probably seen all the different opinions circulating the social networks on how the numbers of followers you have on social platforms like Twitter dictate the level of authority you have.

Nonsense!

While numbers are impressive to see with the naked eye they can be an illusion if there are no connections or conversations taking place among you and your followers. Here's a great article from Michel Fortin on this very topic at http://ow.ly/1SmZ

Embrace the ‘Power of One' mindset and treat each person you meet as the most important person in the world.

Remember -

One connection

One conversation

One friendship

One person can open you up to amazing opportunities and possibilities!

3) The Sleight of Hand

In this trick a magician performs with the audience close, usually within three or four meters, possibly in physical contact. He often makes use of everyday items as props, such as cards and coins and use misdirection and natural choreography in accomplishing a magical effect.

In social media marketing this trick is often used in forced continuity programs. Basically, a product is sold with lots of bonuses and perks for a ridiculously low price and the misdirect or sleight of hand trick is that in the small fine print you are also enrolling in a monthly continuity program that charges your credit card on a monthly basis.

Now let me say that there is nothing wrong with forced continuity when you openly and clearly disclose that your purchase includes a monthly continuity program. The trick to avoid is misdirection, not being open and honest with your customers, and tricking them into your continuity program.

4) The Great Escape

This is the hold your breath type of magic trick where the magician is placed in a restraining device (i.e. handcuffs or a straitjacket) and/or a death trap, and escapes to safety. Famous examples include being put in a straitjacket and into an overflowing tank of water, and being tied up and placed in a car being sent through a car crusher.

Now you're probably wondering how a trick in social media marketing can be compared to that.

Well, believe it or not in social media marketing this trick can be compared to the fear, anticipation, and anxiety that you can feel when you are told that a certain product, call, or event will never be offered again only to find out later on that it was just a hold your breath trick to get you to buy.

Now, don't get me wrong if there is an offer that is truly a one-time offer then there's nothing wrong with it. However, when you use fear of loss as a sales tactic but you don't honor what you're offer is saying then that's a trick that should never be used.

5) The Transformation

In this trick a magician transforms something from one state into another-a silk handkerchief changes color, a lady turns into a tiger, an indifferent card changes to the spectator's chosen card.

In social media marketing I can't begin to tell you how many transformation tricks I've seen. This basically is when a post, tweet, or message is saying one thing but when you click through the link it magically turns into something completely different.

For example, have you ever seen a post giving away a free book or recording only to find that once you click on the link it takes you to a long sales page requiring you to purchase a completely different product in order to receive the free book? Talk about transformation and changing colors!

These 'Top 5 Social Media Magic Tricks to Avoid' are meant to help you prevent from making some costly mistakes in your social media marketing efforts.

Thank you for taking the time to learn more about how you can become more effective in social media marketing. If you found this information to be helpful feel free to share it with your friends.

Remember - A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work. ~ Harvey Fierstein

P.S. Have you had any social media magic tricks pulled on you lately?

Social Media Promotion

Welcome back to Part 3 of the ‘Top 3 Ways to be Invaluable to your Social Network.'

In the previous note we discussed the ‘2nd Way to Be Invaluable to your Social Network' which is ‘Professional Value.'

I shared with you how ‘Professional Value' is your knowledge, expertise, resources, and credibility you provide to your social network in your targeted niche within a specific industry.

Now you know I'm going to ask you if you took action right?

OK, here are the key questions?

Have you decided on a set schedule when and how often you will post to your blog?

Have you posted a blog post, note, or article recently sharing valuable information relevant to your niche?

Have you identified and subscribed to the top bloggers in your niche?

Have you used Tweet Scan to see what others are tweeting about in your niche?

I bet you said ‘Yes' to all those questions right?

Phew! You had me worried. :)

Before we move on to the 3rd and final way to be invaluable to your social network, let me disclose that this is my personal opinion and belief on not only what I focus on to become invaluable to my personal social network but also what I look for in others who become invaluable to me.

So are you ready for the ‘3rd Way to Be Invaluable to your Social Network?'

Fantastic!

It's ‘Promotional Value.'

In my opinion ‘Promotional Value' is the value you create from the quality of the people, content, tools, resources, links, videos, and audios that you promote to your social network.

Now, the 1st and 2nd way of becoming invaluable to your social network is entirely up to you! This means you are directly in the driver's seat when it comes to the personal and professional value you create for your social network. Now in creating ‘Promotional Value' to your social network you are no longer the driver you are the passenger.

What does that mean you ask?

It means that in creating ‘Promotional Value' you will be promoting other people's content, links, posts, resources and so on to your social network that you believe has great value. By promoting someone else's content to your social network you are no longer the driver of that content you are the passenger.

Now the best part is YOU get to decide who the driver is going to be!

This is so important that so many people miss out on because it's so easy to post a link or share an article or re tweet someone else's information without truly taking the time or care in researching what your actually promoting.

If you were going to be the passenger in a race car that was about to go around the track at 150+ miles per hour wouldn't you want to be careful on who the driver is going to be?

I hope so!

Now, when building your ‘Promotional Value' in your niche you want to make sure that the drivers you select know what they're doing and best represent you and your brand.

To become invaluable on a promotional level to your social network you need to carefully promote only that which best represents your ideas, beliefs, values, character, and integrity.

Whoa! That's some big shoes to fill right?

Well, look at it this way.

When you surround yourself with like-minded people who also provide carefully crafted content with ‘Value' sprinkled all over it and you share it with your social network what does that do for you?

It increases your level of promotional value!

So, the next time you decide to promote someone else's blog post, article, tweet, link, note, video, tools, or audio be sure to remember that you're not only promoting that person (the driver) but you're also promoting you and your promotional value.

Promoting other people is so important and in my opinion is the foundation for servant leadership.

Seek to serve others rather than dominate them.

I want to personally thank you for sharing your precious time with me and would love to hear your story on becoming invaluable to your social network.

Social Media Value

Welcome back to Part 2 of the ‘Top 3 Ways to be Invaluable to your Social Network.'

In the previous note we discussed the ‘1st Way to Be Invaluable to your Social Network' which is ‘Personal Value' and the three main areas that covered this are:

*Encouragement

*Friendship

*Partnership

Now here is the key question?

Have you given some genuine encouragement to someone lately?

Have you written down what friendship means to you, what type of friends you want to surround yourself with, and what type of friend you want to be to others?

Do you have some friends that you are creating partnerships with?

Learning how to be invaluable to your social network is just the first step.

Taking action is the next step!

Again, let me disclose that this is my personal opinion and belief on not only what I focus on to become invaluable to my personal social network but also what I look for in others who become invaluable to me.

So are you ready for the ‘2nd Way to Be Invaluable to your Social Network?'

Great!

It's ‘Professional Value.'

Professional value is all about the knowledge, expertise, resources, and credibility you provide to your social network in your targeted niche within a specific industry.

Let me give you an example:

You are in the weight loss industry and your targeted niche is ‘weight loss for busy executives.' In order to provide ‘Professional Value' to your social network you send out daily tips, articles, resources, and tools related to weight loss. You also post a daily or weekly blog about weight loss and more importantly how to lose weight while having a busy schedule. Maybe once a month you have a free webinar or audio download or podcast giving more great insight to weight loss for busy executives. Your social network starts loving you for the great value you bring and they want more of it!

So what's happening is you are not only building ‘personal value' from what you learned on the 1st Way to being Invaluable to your Social Network but now you are adding ‘professional value' as well.

Pretty powerful right?

I've met some great people from social networking that I really enjoy speaking with and appreciate big time. One of the things that every social media marketing plan should have that too many forget to focus on is both the ‘personal value' and the ‘professional value' of social media marketing. When you focus on both you can expect some incredible results from your efforts.

Now at this point, many of the responses I get are:

I don't have time to write a blog every day?

What if I get writer's block?

I'm not good at writing?

I don't know where to find great articles or resources?

Do you feel this way or know someone who does?

Don't worry!

Let me give you some hope and relief ok?

1st, you don't have to write a blog post every day.

Phew, right?

Personally I write a new blog post twice a week and that's it! You've probably heard that some people blog every day or several times a day! Don't be intimidated by this because all you need to do is first get started.

It's important that you set a schedule and stick to it so your readers get familiar with your blog post schedule. Also be sure to promote to your readers to subscribe to your blog feed. Now don't think that you have to write a long post every time or have to write your own content. You can also post reviews, opinions, and comments on resourceful links as well. You can also post your opinions on articles, videos, or other sources related to your industry.

Feel better?

2nd, you don't have to be a great writer.

One of the biggest mistakes when it comes to writing blogs or notes is that too many people 'talk at' their readers instead of 'talk with' their readers.

What does that mean you ask?

Your writing style should be conversation based so write like you're sitting right next to one of your friends. The more conversation based your writing is the easier it is for others to get a feel for you and your style of teaching. After reading several of my notes I'm sure you got a good idea of what my style is like and how I communicate best.

Now, let me share with you the ‘Three Don'ts of Writing' before we move on OK?

Don't try to be all things to all people!

Don't try to please everyone!

Don't ever compromise your values, beliefs, character, or integrity!

Got it?

Great!

3rd, there are countless places to find the best resources and articles related to your industry to stay informed and give insights on through comments and opinions.

Here are some suggestions to get you started:

*Follow the top bloggers in your industry by using Google's blog search at http://blogsearch.google.com/

*Read what the expert authors are writing about in your industry at http://ezinearticles.com/

* Use Micro blog search tool TweetScan to see what others are tweeting about in your industry at http://www.tweetscan.com/

When you focus on becoming invaluable on a personal, professional, and promotional level to your social network there is nothing that can stop you!

Stay tuned for becoming invaluable on a ‘Promotional' level to your social network!

Extra Value

Top 3 Ways to be Invaluable to your Social Network

Before we get started I want to personally thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to learn more about how you can become invaluable to your social network.

One of the topics so widely discussed throughout the social media landscape is about ‘Value' and how important it is in your social media marketing efforts. I couldn't agree more but what I wanted to share with you is my personal opinion on what ‘value' means to me.

First, let me share with you one thing that comes to my mind when we hear about ‘value' and how it's so widely used in today's marketplace.

For example:

Would you like to try our ‘Extra Value' meal today?

When you think ‘extra value meal' what comes to mind?

McDonald's right?

Just for kicks check out their Extra Value Meals...http://ow.ly/ZdA

Ok, no I'm not trying to sell you on eating at McDonald's but I am trying to prove a point. When you think of extra value meals you think of McDonald's right?

Sure we do!

Wouldn't you love to have that same impact with your social network?

Now I don't mean' extra value meal' I mean ‘extra value' when it comes to you and your niche.

Let's say your niche is ‘weight loss for busy people' and you provide an enormous amount of value for busy people who want to lose weight. You build a targeted social network and your focus is on providing great tips, resources, articles, ideas, support, and encouragement to that network.

What happens is your social network eventually becomes a voice for you because you have become such an invaluable person for them in their weight loss efforts. This is when I believe your social network also becomes your promotional network.

That's what you should be aiming for!

The best part is the recommendations are genuine, honest, and positive. There's no better feeling then when you have added value to someone's life and they are excited to share that experience with others.

I can go on and on about how value is created but what's most important is becoming invaluable to your social network.

Again, let me disclose that this is my personal opinion and belief on not only what I focus on to become invaluable to my personal social network but also what I look for in others who become invaluable to me.

So are you ready?

Great!

Here are my ‘Top 3 Ways to be Invaluable to your Social Network' (Part 1 of 3)

Personal Value

Professional Value

Promotional Value

This first note I'm going to cover is ‘Personal Value' and in my opinion it's the most important.

Why?

Because people have to get to know you, like you, and trust you before they ever would want to do business with you.

Now, you have to understand that this rule also applies to someone you want to refer business to you. You can't possibly expect a stranger to send you business and put their name on the line when they don't know you at all.

There are many people that I have built relationships with through social networking that I truly appreciate and would do anything to help them grow their business and it's because they have become invaluable to me.

Now, when I say invaluable I'm not just talking about business I'm also talking about the personal relationships that I have with them too!

Personal Value can be broken down to 3 key areas which are:

*Encouragement

*Friendship

*Partnership

Let's talk about these three areas in more detail ok?

Great!

Encouragement

I believe that encouragement is so important and people could use more of it in their daily lives. Such a simple act of either a word of encouragement or congratulations can make a person feel special, appreciated, and recognized for their achievements. When the opportunity presents itself be that person and most importantly be genuine!

Friendship

Now let me be the first to tell you that simply accepting a friend request or picking up a new follower does not do anything but present the opportunity for you and another person to create a connection. A connection is created when a contact is made either through a direct message, email, wall post and so on. The next step is moving a connection into a conversation and conversations eventually lead to friendships. You become invaluable on a personal level by becoming a great friend.

The stronger the relationships you have with the friends and followers in your social network the greater the opportunities and possibilities will arise from those friendships.

What does friendship mean to you?

What kind of friends do you want to surround yourself with?

What kind of friend do you want to be to others?

These are important questions to ask yourself because social media marketing is in fact a series of social experiences or events that take place on many different platforms. But no matter what platform we're talking about remember that it all boils down to personal relationships.

Partnership

The third area in creating personal value is in partnership. Now, when I say partnership I don't mean it in a legal term but more as a personal partnership between friends. This is when the productive and creative energy just seems to flow between partners (friends), you feed off of each other's ideas, actions and energy and the results are exponentially more than the sum of your personal efforts. A synergistic relationship occurs and it's the foundation for establishing a powerful mastermind.

Creating 'Personal Value' should be the foundation for building your social network. I know that some people may want target their social media marketing efforts strictly on a professional level but in my opinion you miss out on one of the greatest aspects of social media marketing and that's the personal relationships you can build.

The more you realize that most people are tuned into WIFM (What's In It for me) the better you can serve them on many different levels.

When you focus on becoming invaluable on a personal, professional, and promotional level to your social network there is nothing that can stop you!

Stay tuned for becoming invaluable on a ‘Professional' level to your social network!

Remember - Friendship with oneself is all important because without it one cannot be friends with anybody else in the world. ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Time

I felt that this was a much needed message to share with you because the most precious thing we have in life that no amount of money can replace is TIME.

How valuable is your TIME?

What is the definition of TIME?

Let's take a look:

TIME

Definition - A number, as of years, days, or minutes, representing such an interval: One's lifetime, One's period of greatest activity or engagement. A person's experience during a specific period or on a certain occasion.

Your time is valuable and should be spent wisely.

I bet you're wearing countless hats and doing your very best to maintain balance in your life. On top of that you now have to learn all about this social media thing because you know how important it can be to contributing to the success of your business.

Time is priceless!

Just like you're taking the time to read this note.

I value your time and I'll do my best to ensure that your time spent with me is productive, educational, and of course I'll try to make it fun too!

I can tell you that for me learning is fun! When you learn something new and exciting which helps you become more effective and efficient in your business you better have a smile on your face.

Are you smiling now?

Hold on because you will be in a few minutes! :)

I know that it can be an extremely frustrating and confusing experience when you dive into social media marketing head first. On a daily basis you see all the new tools coming out and countless applications you can add and it leads you to question after question.

You can spend so much time just trying to figure what tools are available let alone what tools you should use for your business!

Pretty overwhelming isn't it?

While this note can't possibly cover this huge subject I plan to help make your social media marketing journey a simple, easy, effective and fun experience for you and your business.

Sound good?

Great!

One thing that I want you to know right upfront is that I'm not an expert, guru, authority, or 'Jedi' in social media marketing nor will I ever claim to be. Social Media Marketing to me is just like our tax code and no single person can or will master it all.

Why?

Because it's constantly changing, evolving, and improving even as I write this note!

What I can tell you is that it doesn't take an expert to understand social media marketing nor does it take an expert to learn how to make social media marketing work for YOU!

Good news right?

You betcha!

What I want to share with you is what works for me and that's it. I don't believe in teaching others about something that I don't use myself.

Fair enough?

Great!

We all want to save time and be more effective so what can I possibly share with you in 5 steps that can accomplish that?

Well, for starters let me ask you a few simple questions that may shed a little light on the subject.

Would you be able to save time if you can create one message in one location that automatically posts as a tweet to your Twitter account and a status update on your Facebook account?

Would it save you time if at that same location you're also able to shorten your URL links?

Would you be more effective if you could schedule your tweets and updates to be sent out on a time and date scheduled basis?

Would you be more effective if you could track and view how many of your followers and friends are clicking through your links that are embedded in your tweets and updates?

These are just a few of the many benefits that you will uncover after you learn and apply the following '5 Steps to Being More Effective & Efficient in Social Media Marketing.'

Best of all is it's FREE!

Let's get started shall we?

Step 1

Set up a Twitter Account

If you're not set up on Twitter then first things first.

Watch the Twitter in Plan English video at http://vimeo.com/757146

Pretty neat video huh?

Now, go to http://www.twitter.com and set up an account. I'm sure that most of you are on Twitter but if you're not now is the time to get started. Once you have set up a Twitter account move onto step 2.

Step 2

Sync Facebook with Twitter

Log into your Facebook account and add the Twitter application. To install the Twitter app click on the applications tab and do a search for the Twitter application. Once you accept the Twitter application make sure to have your Twitter ‘Username' and ‘Password' handy as this is required to sync your Twitter account with Facebook.

Once you have completed this step all future tweets that you send will automatically post as status updates to your Facebook account as well. This is an incredible time saver and allows you to communicate with your followers on Twitter and friends on Facebook at the same time.

Let's move onto step 3!

Step 3

Set up a Hoot Suite Account

What is Hoot Suite?

Hoot Suite is the ultimate Twitter toolbox where you can manage multiple Twitter profiles, pre-schedule tweets, and measure your click through success rates. I love this tool because it allows you to be much more effective and efficient in your social media communication.

I'm sure you've heard me talk about how providing 'value' to your friends and followers is key but what's even more important is to continue to improve that 'value' more and more over time. One of the ways to improve the value in what you send out is to track the click through rates of your messages.

The more you can track what your friends and followers prefer to receive the more effective and productive your social experience becomes!

To set up a Hoot Suite account go to http://hootsuite.com/

Step 4

Sync Hoot Suite with Twitter

Now that you have a hoot suite account you need to sync your Twitter profile to hoot suite. To do this log into your hoot suite account and click on the ‘Add Twitter Profile' tab. Hoot Suite will require you to type in your Twitter Username and Password in order to validate your account. You can add as many Twitter profiles to hoot suite as you wish. Pretty neat huh?

Guess what?

Now you have Hoot Suite, Twitter, and Facebook all synched together!

Step 5

Send out a message with an embedded URL (Tweet / Status Update)

From your Hoot Suite account click on the ‘Create New Tweet' tab. Now type in a message that you want your followers on Twitter and Friends on Facebook to see. Remember it can only be 140 characters but don't worry Hoot Suite lets you know if it's too long. Preferably send out a message with a link that you can shorten. You'll see that right in the ‘Create New Tweet' window it allows you to shorten your URL right from within Hoot Suite. Incredible time saver rather than having to go to tinyurl.com all the time.

What's even better is once you send out your message from Hoot Suite you can view the click through rates of all your messages that contain URLs embedded in the message!

How sweet is that!

For example:

Create New Tweet message -

Example - Got a great business idea? Are you on track to launch? Avoid the '3 Startup Dead Zones' that most entrepreneurs face. http://ow.ly/J08

Notice - After you shorten your URL it will automatically be placed at the end of your message.

Hot Tip! - Notice that after you create your message you also have the ability to choose to send the message now or select a date and time when you prefer the message to go out. You can even choose to have Hoot Suite send you an email to let you know that your message was sent.

How sweet is that!

Now click on the ‘Submit' tab

Congratulations you have just completed the 5 Steps!

Now your message will be sent out to your Twitter profile as a tweet and will be sent as a status update on your Facebook profile. I encourage you to watch the effectiveness of your messages by logging into Hoot Suite and monitoring your click through rates.

I hope that you have enjoyed just one of the many ways you can work smarter in social media marketing not harder.

Remember -

Until you value yourself, you will not value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it. ~ M. Scott Peck

EntrepreneurWelcome back to Part 2 of the ‘5 Ways to Unleash the Entrepreneur in YOU!'

By now, I'm sure you've got a journal handy, started capturing those ‘Golden Moments' on paper and heck I bet you took some of those awesome ideas and plugged them into the formula.

What formula?

You're kidding me right?

Phew! You had me scared but here it is again for those of you who were serious:

Passion + Purpose + Persistence = Prosperity?

Got have passion or as my friend Doug Firebaugh puts it "Passion Fire!"

Now that you've got that ‘HOT IDEA' and it qualifies under the formula above do you remember what was next?

No?

OK, looks like I should recap for a moment on what I covered on the previous note because in order for YOU to unleash the business that's laying dormant in your mind you must take action!

You see there's no shortage of information when it comes to ‘How to be successful' or ‘How to start an Internet business' and so on. For example: There are countless books, CDs, programs, and diet plans that teach you how to lose weight. Why do you think it's a $40 billion dollar industry! But the big question is "why is 40% of the country still overweight?" Everyone has the knowledge available to lose weight but the only way it will happen is if action is taken.

You've probably heard that knowledge is power but I believe that ‘Applied Knowledge' is the real power.

OK, so here's the brief recap:

We know that the greatest innovations, developments, inventions, companies, and success stories will arise as a result of the current economic times than any time in history.

This is truly the ‘Year of the Entrepreneur!'

I've shared with you why now there's never been a better time in history where we have had the ability to connect with one another on such a massive scale without any obstacles preventing us other than needing a computer and an Internet connection.

YOUR Mind is greater than any super computer in the world!

So let's put it to work!

I covered the following 3 of the 5 ways on the previous note.

Remember?

1) Keep a journal

Some of the greatest business ideas come when you least expect it and you must have a journal on hand at all times to capture what I call ‘Golden Moments.'

2) Research your ideas

Once you have a ‘Hot Idea' that your passionate about then plug in the next formula which is

Hot Idea + Starving Crowd + Money Being Spent + Little Competition = BIG Opportunity!

We covered a few research tools for you such as:

*Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com

*Google Keyword Tool

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

An excellent tool that allows you to research advertiser competition and search volume based on your keyword selected. The greater the niche in your idea the better it is.

3) Record your ideas

Don't have time to write? Why not record yourself and sell a CD or downloadable audio instead? Or you can always have your audios transcribed into text and BAM there's your eBook!

I shared some great tools for getting the job done:

*For recording audios, podcasts use BYO Audio at http://tinyurl.com/cpdh8n

*To record audios on the go with excellent quality use Zoom H2 or Zoom H4 which can be purchased at Radio Shack.

*To transcribe your audiosinto text and save countless hours of typing check out Verbalink at http://www.verbalink.com.

*For creating an eBook you can use eBook Pro at http://tinyurl.com/amxv9q

*For creating dynamite coversfor your eBook, report, CD, or DVD check out Dynamite covers check out http://tinyurl.com/atfkz6

Ready to move on to the final two ways?

Great!

Here's Part 2 of the ‘5 Ways to Unleash the Entrepreneur in YOU!'

4) Build your Dream Team

No matter how talented, gifted, skilled, or smart you are, success will only come if you bring some special people on the journey with you.

Your team!

Building a team is crucial to the success of your business and not just any team but what I call a ‘Dream Team.'

What is a ‘Dream Team?'

Definition - a number of persons of the highest ability associated in some joint action.

Choosing the people who will have an intimate role in your vision and business is so important so be diligent. Make sure they have the highest integrity, character, and values that reflect what you and your business are all about. More importantly is to assemble key people that have strengths in the areas where you are weak. Keep in mind when I talk about your team I'm also referring to your providers who will be a part of your day to day business operations.

For example:

Let's say you are an expert in ‘pet grooming' and you want to write a course on how to start a pet grooming business. You've had a brick and mortar pet grooming business for years and now you want to start an Internet business to promote your store and generate a whole new income stream with your info products on 'starting a pet grooming business.'

Don't know where to start?

This is why you would need a ‘Dream Team' so your vision for your business can come to a reality. By seeking the experts in the specific areas where you are weak will put your business on a fast track to success.

Now, let me also say that there is another team that you will need to assemble called the ‘Mastermind Team'or mentorship team. This team will consist of trainers, coaches, experts, consultants, and speakers who you will learn from to further grow personally, professionally, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Is this important?

Don't take it from me the concept of the Mastermind Group was formally introduced by Napoleon Hill in the early 1900's. In his timeless classic, "Think and Grow Rich" he wrote about the Mastermind principle as:

"The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony."

He continues...

"No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind."

This doesn't necessarily mean that you must have some of these superstars working with you on a personal one on one basis, (shoot for the stars why not?) but it does mean that you can follow their trainings, subscribe to their feeds, blogs, tweets, and study their materials.

One of the most powerful strategies you can ever apply is the ‘Virtual Mastermind' where you visualize having a mastermind meeting with your selected mentors.

Visualize this for a moment with me ok?

You're in a comfortable meeting room overlooking the ocean on a tropical island and sitting alongside you at the large granite table is your ‘Mastermind' team. They are there to brain storm and help you grow your business. In this meeting are the greatest minds in business, Internet Marketing superstars, Social Media Marketing experts, and so on. Visualize what each of the members would tell you what you should be doing and how to better improve your business. Imagine having them at your disposal any time you want! Use the ‘Virtual Mastermind' and you'll be amazed on how you will transform your business.

5) Use the Power of Mind Mapping

I love this aspect of ‘Unleashing the Entrepreneur in YOU' because it crystallizes your thoughts, HOT ideas, and marketing/social media plan in a visualized format. A mind map works the way our human brain works, but helps by a powerful graphical process. It frees your mind to think, visualize, and understand in ways that go way beyond notepads, excel documents, or recordings. So when you need to brainstorm, plan, learn, organize, save time, improve recall, and manage the details of your new business venture, a mind map is a great place to do it all.

What is a mind map?

Definition-

A mind map (or mind-map) is a diagram used for linking words and ideas to a central key word or idea. It is used to visualize, classify, structure, and generate ideas, as well as an aid in study, problem solving, and decision making.

Mind mapping takes your ‘Hot Idea' and puts it into a workable format or blueprint where you're able to map out your entire business flow in a visual format.

One of my mentors who are well known for promoting this is Yanik Silver. He is a mind-mapping maniac!

Now, I do know that some of you may say that you are already using mind mapping and do it on a note pad. That's OK but sometimes using a platform like Mindjet can help you share your planning with your partners or ‘Dream Team' members in a much easier fashion.

For some FREE mind mapping software programs go to http://tinyurl.com/3b5fuk

For some serious mind mapping softwarethat allows you to share with others on an on-line platform check out Mindjet - http://tinyurl.com/qma4t

If this information has made an impact on you please feel free to share it with your friends!

5 Ways to Unleash the Entrepreneur in YOU!

I was pretty excited to write this note because we are at this very moment at a place in time where I believe that some of the greatest innovations, developments, inventions, companies, and success stories will arise as a result than any time in history.

In my opinion this is the ‘Year of the Entrepreneur!'

What is an Entrepreneur?

Definition - A person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. Most commonly, the term entrepreneur applies to someone who creates value by offering a product or service.

So why do I believe that there is so much incredible opportunity knocking right at your door in these challenging times?

Well, glad you asked!

You see in the midst of challenges some people decide to wear crutches while others decide to grow wings!

So are you ready to fly?

Fantastic! That's what I knew you would say.

First, let me share some things with you that may get you even more excited about what I'm saying.

There's never been a better time in history where we have had the ability to connect with one another on such a massive scale without any obstacles preventing us other than needing a computer and an Internet connection.

Some of the greatest companies of our time began during tough economic times and they didn't have anything close to the resources we have today. But what they did have was something that is far greater and more powerful than any technology ever invented today or even in the future.

What is it?

It's the power of MIND!

Your MIND Power trumps all! Once you tap into the God given potential that you have at your disposal then nothing is impossible.

Don't take it from me, take a look at some entrepreneurs who rose to the occasion during a recession http://tinyurl.com/6ztca8

Remember, tough times don't last but tough people do!

Social media marketing has truly leveled the playing field for aspiring entrepreneurs. Think about this for a moment?

To achieve success online...

...do you need deep pockets?

...do you need to be a computer whiz kid?

...do you need to be an expert in SEO?

No to all those questions!

Pretty amazing isn't it?

Here are '5 Ways to Unleash the Entrepreneur in You!' (PART 1)

1) Keep a journal

Ever had a great idea that just hit you and later on you forgot what that great idea was? Some of the greatest business ideas come when you least expect it and you must have a journal on hand at all times to capture what I call ‘Golden Moments.' This also includes taking copious notes when you're on a training call or at an event. Do you realize that you retain only 10% of what you hear?

You can also capture amazing marketing ideas or a topic for an eBook, report, and so on. You may miss the next greatest headline that can be a hit with your new eBook or web site sales copy. For example, the title for this note came to me when I was driving my car and I was drinking a Monster Energy drink and when I put the drink in the cup holder I noticed the saying on the back of the can ‘Unleash the Beast'.

Bingo!

I love that word ‘Unleash' and I wrote it down in my journal. As a result the title of this note became ‘5 Ways to Unleash the Entrepreneur in You'!

Pretty neat huh?

2) Research your ideas

Once you have a journal of ‘Golden Moments' now it's time to do some research on those HOT ideas. Remember my formula?

Passion + Purpose + Persistence = Prosperity?

Use this formula as the foundation for identifying your 'HOT' business ideas.

You've probably heard ‘do what you love on the Internet and you'll make a killing.'

Not true!

You have to do what you love but you must also do research to determine three other extremely important ingredients that almost every aspiring entrepreneur misses or ignores.

First, you must determine if there is a starving market looking for your 'HOT' idea.

Second, you need to determine if money is already being spent in your 'HOT' niche idea. If people are already spending money right now then all you need to do is get a piece of it for yourself.

Third, you must determine how much competition you have.

Here's my formula:

Hot Idea + Starving Crowd + Money Being Spent + Little Competition = BIG Opportunity!

Now the loaded question is how do you do research to determine if you have a potential winner.

Here are just a few sources for starters:

*Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com

Amazon is by far one of the best research tools because you can look up the category your idea falls under and identify the sub category to further target your idea. Best of all you can review the comments made by all the people who purchased those products. Sometimes the reviews give you insight to what buyers wish the product had. BINGO!

*Google Keyword Tool

https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal

An excellent tool that allows you to research advertiser competition and search volume based on your keyword selected. The greater the niche in your idea the better it is.

For example:

If you do a research on ‘How to Dog Groom' you'll see that there is a search volume of approx 4,400 people in February 2009 for that niche but with little competition in web sites catering to that niche. Use this tool in conjunction with researching using Amazon.

While there are many other research tools available I just want to give you a simple start without getting you too overwhelmed.

Fair enough?

Great!

3) Record your ideas

One of the most common excuses I hear from aspiring entrepreneurs who have such great information to share is they have this fear of writing poorly or it's too difficult or it takes way too long. Nonsense! EBooks or reports don't have to be hundreds of pages long. They can be as short as 20 or even 5 pages. It's not quantity it's quality that counts.

Also, don't think you have to unload everything you know in one eBook. I know of many successful entrepreneurs that break up their niche into sub niches and end up kicking out 4-5 eBooks as opposed to one.

Don't have time to write? Why not record yourself and sell a CD or downloadable audio instead? Or you can always have your audios transcribed into text and BAM there's your eBook!

Here are some great tools for getting the job done:

*To record audios, podcasts, or calls I personally use BYO Audio at http://tinyurl.com/cpdh8n

*To record audios on the go with excellent quality use Zoom H2 or Zoom H4 which can be purchased at Radio Shack. Great time saver and it takes the fear out of writing. Unleash that great idea you have and don't wait another minute. You can do this!

*To transcribe your audios into text and save countless hours of typing check out Verbalink at http://www.verbalink.com. Make your eBook come to life with this simple, fast, and affordable service!

*For creating an eBook I personally use eBook Pro which gives you far more security over your content than any others that I've seen. For more info go to http://tinyurl.com/amxv9q

*For creating dynamite covers for your eBook, report, CD, or DVD check out Dynamite covers at http://tinyurl.com/atfkz6

Use this information as a starting block to unleash the entrepreneur in YOU! I believe that you have an unbelievable business just waiting to get started and all it takes is some direction and the will to get it done.
